How to get up earlier in the mornings...

Get a dog. My dogs wake me up every day around sunrise. They need to go out, they want breakfast, and they want love and attention too. Sure beats a nasty sounding alarm clock.;)

go to bed earlier.

i have pretty severe insomnia right now so i've been waking up every 2 hrs or so but when i'm on a normal sleep schedule i'm in bed by about 9pm every night and i get up around 630 (my alarm is set for 7am) almost every morning. even on my days off i try to go to sleep and wake up around the same time so my sleeping patterns and daily schedule isn't thrown off.

it will take some time to get adjusted but once you do, the routine will be automatic.

^^^ haha, that coffee machine thing sounds pretty wicked.. Unfortunately my room is too small for anything extra to be put beside my bed, and I'm more of a Green Tea drinker anyway! Maybe a machine that pours boiling hot water on me every time I hit the snooze button? lol

My trick for getting out of bed is deceivingly simple. My bad pattern was always to just slam the alarm clock off then immediately close my eyes and head back to sleep. But I find that if I just force myself to keep my eyes open for 1 minute, I will be able to get out of bed earlier. I always trick myself when I do this saying "I'm just going to keep them open for 1 minute, then I'll go back to sleep." That's the only way I can convince myself to do it. But then after the minute is up my brain is churning away and I won't go back to sleep. It works for me.

i work at starbucks so every once in a while i have to get up at 345AM...

what i do is just go to bed at midnight or whatever... live one hellish day, then i fall asleap early that night and automatically get up at like 9 the next day

after a couple days your body just gets into that cycle, and your internal alarm clock will wake you up

nowdays i get up at 345 pretty much everymorning automatically, then flip out thinking im late for work, then im able to crash back out till 8-9

number 1 tip: DON'T GET MASHED THE NIGHT BEFORE!

haha I really have to take this back... lately it seems that if I can get myself to pass out earlier I'll wake up somewhat earlier. So I guess my suggestion is really to get so stoned so early in the night that you pass out early enough to get in a solid ten hours of sleep :D

i remember learning in a class of some sort that if you get smashed at night one of two things happens..

you pass out of course, and then either you dont wake up, no matter what, for a few hours... or you do wake up in a couple hours and then you cant sleep anymore..

i dont remember exactly where i got that from but i wonder if i could use that to my advantage ;)

have your alarm clock on the other side of the room so you have to get out of bed to switch it off.
haha, i didn't even realize i was doing that, im so used to it, and it really doesn't prevent me to go back to sleep (if i feel like it)...
the best and worse for me was when i was making myself a shooter coffee, i mean the night before you put some water in a glass lots of instant coffee (the equivalent of 1-3 coffee) and when the alarm bitch you up you drink it one shot and go back to sleep... and then you realize you cant get back to sleep, that you don't feel comfortable and that eating something should probably help, so you get up... not very fun but it did work
but now a days i don't have a problem with waking up like i use to, probably cause im older and actually care to go to bed at night...

good luck !

(i remember when i was talking about starting a religion againt alarm clock and how almost all of the world problem where cause by the use of alarm clock)

I feel the same way you do. I attend classes at night and have to be at work at 8:00A.M. You have to tell yourself you can do it and you will better yourself in the end. You body will get used to it after awhile. It may take you awhile to get up in the mornings but by the end of the day you will have more energy to do things. You also will be more motivated because you know you have to do something and it will be on you all day and then when it is finished it is off your shoulders. Then you can go to bed and get a good nights rest.

The truth of the matter is you're just gonna have to suck it up and do it. I'm a very deep sleeper myself, and I'd sleep all day if I could. I don't wanna wake up at 7:30 to get to work on time, yet if I wanna work out I'll push myself to wake up at 5:45 so I can go to the gym before work. How do I do it? I just suck it up and do what I have to do. It's tough at first, but it's just making the adjustment that's difficult. It gets easier with time. I do have a loud alarm clock, and an mp3 alarm on my computer that plays music so that I have to walk over to it to turn it off, but for months I'd just get up, turn it off, and go back to sleep. That didn't fix anything for me. It came from within.

Go to sleep early, and don't get wrecked before you hit the sack. That's really your best defense from sleeping until 4 in the afternoon. But in all honesty, no matter what kind of idea you come up with to make it happen, the truth is that if you really like to sleep that much you're just gonna have to suck it up and pick your ass up out of bed anyways.

I know that wasn't what you wanted to hear, but damn if it's not the truth. Good luck. :)

All you people are just freaks! Geez, drink water(bah), go to sleep early(phooey). I say have a nice fat line of coke or meth cut up waiting next to your bed. Wake up, lean over, *snort* *snort*, wakey wakey!

either that or a rube (sp?) goldberg machine that cooks eggs, cuts up a line of meth and coke, mixes em up, and pours water on your head all while the alarm clock is going off

This works. And who can be mad at a puppy waking you up (most of the time)? :D

Thanks for all the replies everyone :)

Came across an interesting reply in the article TheLoveBandit posted, regarding sleep cycles, so I decided to do some further research. I knew this before, just never really thought I could apply it to myself in order to wake up earlier.

So yesterday, I decided I would get myself to wake up after 4 sleep cycles. Before going to bed, I opened the curtains so the light would shine in on me in the morning, and I drank about a pint of water so that I would need to pee when I woke up. I also said affirmations ("I will wake up after 4 sleep cycles") until I fell asleep.

And it worked! I went to bed at almost 2, and I woke up a bit past 7 *without* my alarm and I was able to get out of bed! This is from somebody who can easily sleep 10- 12 hours... I'm feeling a bit tired - although only a tiny bit, but next time I'll add about 1 more cycle.

But since I woke up after 5 hours and 20 mins, it means that my sleep cycles are either 80 minutes or 106 minutes, rather than 90... Odd.

I'll continue with this method, I hope it wasn't just a lucky accident and that I'll be able to stick to this method, because waking up on your own is so much more refreshing than being woken up by an alarm clock... and for a good scientific reason too; waking up at the end of your sleep cycle (during light sleep) is just so much healthier than being woken up in the middle of your cycle.

i usually just put 2 alarm clocks not in reach of my bed.
when i really do i have to get up

the problem is my body might sleep through the alarm clocks...
but if i can get up then i just deal with it

regular sleep cycle is even more important than going to bed early (allthough this is key as well)

force urself to wake up at the exact same time every day, and your brain will always end its sleep cycle around that time after a few months of it. unfortunately, (for me anyways) this makes it very difficult to "sleep in" when you want to.

bed at same time (+/- 30 mins) and wake at same time (+/- 10 minutes) for about 6-8 weeks and ur body will always wake up with a lot more energy and alertness (provided u regularly get proper sleep)
