how to deal with cartilage injury?

few days ago while benching i felt something move in my right shoulder and suddenly there was a pain felt right under the front delt. it didn't seem like there was much inflammation, i took three full days off working out the shoulder and today, getting back to it, i noticed there's a big clicking in the shoulder with each rep (no pain, just clicking) when I try and do bent-over lateral raises to work the rear delts. i don't want to do any lasting injury but that is an exercise that's tough to replace so i'm wondering what's the protocol for this? how long does such a thing usually take to heal up properly?
 
Whenever I have that similar kind of injury it will usually take about a week to heal and also depending on the severity of the injury. I will say you should be fine after a few more days.
 
Glucosamine & Chondroitin is something I take.. IMO the body needs this and I think looses the ability to produce it, but can utilize it if ingested.. also lower weights and higher reps may be in your future. Also the inflammation may likely have been a "spasm" or in real talk a cramp.. and it takes a while to recover from a prolonged cramp as that muscle is worked and needs to be repaired.
 
Just because it doesn't hurt anymore doesn't mean the injury is healed, especially if it's at all related to your rotator cuff. I would give it more time. If anything, stretching will help it more because it will get the blood circulating in there. Strength training just stresses the muscles and tendons even more.

Clicking is bone, but it's often because the soft tissue around it is pressing against it due to a pathology -- in your case a recent injury. The clicking is evidence that the soft tissue is not quite right yet.

I would give it more time. If you keep working it out while it's not fully healed you can develop a chronic injury that takes much longer to heal. Just be patient.
 
The Glucosamine & Chondroitin will help add in some MSM and some cissus quadrangularis and it will help a good bit. The Cissus has been linked in a few studies to increase the rate at which bones heal, and has been shown to lower the over all level of inflammation to the offending joint. If you wanted to go further, a peptide that has popped up the past year or so has been shown with relative success to help speed the recovery of soft tissue ligament and joint issue TB-500(Thymosin Beta 4 (Tβ4)) at around 2mg.week for a period of 10-12 weeks, with the option of a maintenance dose of 2mg monthly has seen some significant success in healing and even reversing the injury. As well over the past few years the use of HGH in IAGH ( Intra Articular Growth Hormone ) treatments have shown great success in returning, pro Athletes back to their per-injury state.

That all being said the shoulder is a complex joint and a lot can happen there though Foreigner said it best give it time to heal, so lighten up on the shoulder for a week, or so. You should also think about stretching the joint and working it through its full ROM with light weight during the recovery phase, so as to not loose any ROM and to aid in getting the blood flowing there. RICE ( Rest Ice Compression Elevation), can help during the initial injury, but you may want to see if you can get a compression shirt for the shoulder to help support it when you are lifting.
 
thanks guys, advice helped a lot :) i looked into glucosamine but all the ones i could find are derived from shellfish so that's a pass for me :\
