How to address rude minority coworkers?

you guys should ask my grandmother why she retired from the IRS

got a lot darker over the years

Has no one who posted in the "this isn't a race issue" vein stopped to think about the fact that maybe the OP doesn't know how to handle any unreasonably rude coworker?I guess having your post reflect how PC and fair-minded you are is more important than actually trying to help the OP.

Thank you. You're very perceptive! I cannot bear people who put PC behaviour ahead of everything else.

To the OP: since you're a new employee, I'm afraid there's not much you can do, even though your co-worker sounds like a complete asshole. But, if you suspect she might be here illegally, you could always report her to ICE...I did that when a bunch of loud ass immigrants in my old apartment building were blaring that ranchero music at all hours...I just called and said I thought there were Columbian drug runners in the building. Then I wrote a letter to the DEA, claiming the same thing. Two weeks later, some DEA agents, and sherrif's deputies made a surprise visit (at 4am) to that apartment. Three of the guys were actually arrested (for what, I don't know)...

So, what I'm saying is, sometimes if you fight dirty you'll actually get results.

almost as annoying as people who just label anybody with whom they disagree with as "pc'? probably.

there is no such thing as political correctness.

alasdair

* i am aware this is an exaggeration. it is hyperbole for comic effect :)

This. The issue doesn't sound like a racial issue, just address the situation as you would with anyone else. It seems that over-thinking this and turning it into a racial issue when it really isn't is going to cause more problems than simply addressing it as it is.

this-

just bring up the behaviour that is the problem and how it affects people and complain about that.

If she has seniority, does her job well and doesn't give management shit then you are probably not going to win this one. Her race or demeanor towards coworkers is inconsequential if she possesses those three golden traits. There are usually two types of management, those that care what their underlings are doing to each other only when they are losing money/will get a law suit as a result and those that genuinely care no matter what. In my experience the former is much more common...

Well, regardless of performances of political correctness (here or in the immediate situation described by the OP), the only way that the OP will be able to find any resolution is by acting irrespectively of how race may potentially become involved (echoing others, it seems like seniority of the 'problem employee' will be the main obstacle vis-a-vis HR).

ebola

Without even reading more than thethread title, I would just say, same as you would any other co-worker who gives you problems.

Just be yourself and dont do anything special just for her. You wont be able to fix her so best to find a way to deal without stressing.

In life you will always run into people like this. Its the way of the world. How did I deal with the really mean old assholes i used to work with? Pot smoking, lots n lots of pot:-)

If u can get on her good side, queer minorities are great to have on your side lol. You might even have fun talking shit about your customers (in private, after u deal with them of course) with her.

If u can't beat her (never beat anyone, but ESP not a queer minority lady,) join her!!

[edit: this is comin from a queer minority just FYI, not that it matters of course lol

If she likes u, u can bet she will stand by your side no matter what.]

Is it even possible for a new employee to discuss issues they are having with a well-established employee that fits into so many PC check boxes as well?

Do you live in Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia or Wyoming? If so, you could inform your management that her sexual orientations constitute sufficient ground for her dismissal.

If you live anywhere else in the US, however, you should communicate your concerns to her directly in a professional and respectful manner. This is the expected protocol for these types of situations, at least in work environments that aren't still mired in the 1950's.

You will have to put up with her while you are looking for a new job. If this place is corporate the lady possesses a set of attributes that makes her untouchable and she knows this imo. By chance is she handicapable in any way b/c that would be the icing that would make her invincible imo

I really don't see how race has anything to do with this - every kitchen I've ever worked in had a Hispanic majority. If the cook is under-performing and being a general nuisance to work with, I don't see why your manager wouldn't do something about it.

Maybe a male mexican, yes I see your point. But a female hispanic lesbian women is virtually untouchable. Short of her stabbing someone there is not much you can do. Now I say this coming from the fact that I have only ever worked in a corporate environment. Private business might be a different ball game. While political correctness has its positive attributes it is very much a double edged sword.

Ya you guys are right I'm just going to have to learn to deal with it and hope I can win her over somehow. Thank you for actually trying to help or sharing your experiences. For those who were suggesting I am racist I usually date black girls and my drug dealer is black. But I guess none of that matters because I don't see the world exactly how you do.
I'm racist, you're racist, and everybody who has posted on here is probably racist to some extent. But racism is bad, so nobody will admit it (even to themselves) because they don't want to be a racist asshole. And being in denial about it isn't going to help you see past it. That being said, forget about the cook's ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation. Those things don't matter, and I don't see how thinking about those things will help you. So try looking at the situation without ethnic prejudices clouding your judgement.

The hardest thing about most jobs is dealing with difficult people. And your cook sounds very difficult. She is probably bitter, hateful, and resentful which is understandable because at her old age she is still only a cook (a stressful job) and probably not earning much.

As you said, trying to win her over is a good idea. Try something like bringing in a box of doughnuts and sharing them with your shift-workers. If that fails, I don't know -- maybe you can sabotage her and get her fired, or you can change jobs. But your next job might have somebody just as difficult as she is.

I've worked in 8 different kitchens over the years with men, women, whites, blacks, Mexicans, ethnic Chinese, straights, gays, lesbians, Christians, Jews, douchebags, and saints - none of them were safe from being fired because of "who they are". If you don't pull your weight, you get the boot. The double-edged sword you speak of doesn't really apply.

I say bring her flowers.

It does apply I worked closely lol with the HR lady at my last corporate gig and I remember they had brainstorming sessions on how to get rid of a bad employee that just happened to be gay. Seen her can a ton of people but b/c he was very vocal about discrimination he is still working their. Granted it was a data mining company and not a restaurant the idea still stands. I guess it is sort of pay back for being treated so horribly up until present days. A form of reparations if you will.

I don't know how strong anti-discrimination law is in Nice, but it's probably stronger than the laws we have in the States. Where I live, for example, it is legal to fire a person if they speak Spanish in the workplace. American racists like the OP need not fret.
