How many of you suffer insomnia? And...

I still think Temazepam, At least the generic teva I got, suck for sleep. I keep waking up every night at weird times from 3 to 4am and I dont need to be up, and it takes forever to get back to sleep. I think My next Temazepam script needs upped, get brand name, or just try and switch. What Secobarb? How does it feel and how dangerous is it?

9/10 you won't get that...

Secobarbital is a strong short acting barbiturate.
It is used in the same manner as temazepam, but it is waaaayyyy more sedating and is rarely prescribed to inpatients anymore. It is one of the most heavily abused sleeping pills.
There are very few outpatient use of secobarbital anymore.
Most of us illegally obtain them.

Secorbarbital is (was) dangerous because if you feel suicidal you just have to take a whole box of it and bye-bye life. That's why it was withdrawn from the market (and the addiction could be severe, too).

secobarbital is a potent fast acting barbiturate. it is quite dangerous when abused or used long term, and feels similar to alcohol, strong hypnotic benzos(temazepam, nimetazepam, flunitrazepam), and methaqualone. secobarbital is widely known for it's euphoric intoxicating effects, it is a schedule 2 controlled substance and is rarely perscribed. barbiturates(esp. secobarbital) are very addictive and are easy to overdose on.

since your doc most likely won't give you potent barbiturates, temazepam is the next best thing. ask your doc to raise your dose, but be careful as temazepam is extremely addictive among insomniacs(like me).

it wasn't withdrawn from the market, i know several private care clinics that have docs who give their rich patents reds to "calm down".

also secobarbital is sometimes perscribed when benzos and z-drugs have failed, but that depends on the doctor and how willing he is to have his neck on the line for perscribing such a dangerous drug.

I was gonna try and ask for these. But I would probably kill myself, by accident. I didn't know if they felt good or what.

I had a doctor who prescribed me nearly everything and didn't respond so I was given Seroquel. I asked, and this was years ago, if Secobarbital would be an option and she gave me the oddest look then said no doctor would ever do that...said it was unethical. So...I was put on the Seroquel. Said it was the strongest thing I'd get.

Think a second about ethics...an anti-psychotic over a barbiturate.

Let's see if I can keep this alive by asking the original question again....

1. What sort of insomnia do you suffer (do you wake multiple times in the night, etc.)
2. Do you believe you suffer insomnia naturally or do you believe over years of substance abuse have caused it?
3. What do you take for sleep?

Well, for those following, you've heard my speech (es):

I have chronic intermittent insomnia, I have both trouble falling asleep and staying asleep. Though the trouble with staying asleep seems to manifest itself more when I am taking Zolpidem or Eszopiclone. They put to to sleep but do not keep me asleep. 3mg eszopiclone keeps me asleep around 3 hours.. similar for 10mg zolpidem.

I think the insomnia is not drug related; but is probably attached to some kind of generalized anxiety disorder.

I seem to have an unnaturally high tolerance to any sedative drug, except alcohol.
3mg Eszopiclone is the maximum recommended dose, yet it fails to keep me asleep. Likewise for Zolpidem. Clonazepam does wonders for my anxiety but I get little to no sedation from it, currently at a nighttime dosage of 1mg.

I have yet to try a benzo that is supposed to be more sedating than clonazepam, xanax did nothing. My doc today suggested we may try temazepam in the near future if the lunesta is still not working.

You could try the Temazepam or possibly up the dose of the Clonazpam, you think?

I tired upping the dosage of the S-Zopiclone; both the doc and the psych thought that wasn't a good idea. Still at 4.5mg Lunesta, It wasn't keeping me asleep more than 5.5 hours.

In my latest meeting with my doctor we decided it may be time to see a specialist and or do a sleep study type ordeal.
The reaosns being that high doses of Ambien and Lunesta are not sedating me very well, even 4.5 mg S-Zopiclone + 1mg of Clonazepam did not keep me asleep more than 5 hours.

The list Of things I've tried has now come to:
All OTC and Herbal stuff, Xanax, Klonopin, Zoloft, Trazadone, Mirtazipine, Ambien, and Lunesta.

So we (doc, psych and I) are concerned that there may be some reason, chemically in my brain, that makes it rather unresponsive to sedatives even at relatively higher than normal doses.

Anyone else in a similar situation?
Anyone taken part in a sleep-study or been seen specifically by a sleep specialist?

i don't know if i really am an insomniac.. i just like to stay up late and i have to force myself to sleep before 12... but i just stay on the computer instead most of the time. hm

its generally not a problem if you can go to sleep when you need to. Even if you stay up late, if you are able to fall right asleep you are better off than most of us. I could go to bed at 9pm and not have to get up until 9am but get nowhere even close to 12 hours of sleep...

ya i always have my laptop in front of me.....till about 5 in the morning....

Same here, I go to sleep around 10pm and wake at 9am but don't get anywhere near 11 hours of sleep. I wake up maybe 3-4 times in the middle of the night and keep awake like an hour each time I wake up. So I probably get 6 hours of sleep total but each time I wake in the middle of the night is so exhausting I tell ya.

I really don't look forward to night, I hate it.

SkagKush ya i always have my laptop in front of me.....till about 5 in the morning....

I don't stay awake that early in the morning but I have my laptop with me nearly all the time because its part of my job. Luckily I get to set my own hours. I own a club and I have to work on a lot of things. On Friday-Sunday though I have to be at the club
