Metal can be smoother if the pipe is long, which is easy to get. Every decent material (glass, clay, stone, metal, etc.) can be used to make a damn good pipe.

To answer the question, I've broken 2 glass pieces before. I love glass pipes, and one of these was thick glass too. Oh well, good glass pipes are cheap as hell so you can always buy a new one.

I have no idea but for sure its a lot more than 12. I've been blazing for over 13 years and tend to drop stuff.
 
My rule with my nice water pipe is that it never leaves the ground. I always set it on the floor so if it gets knocked over I only break ash catcher and bowl at worst.

EDIT: If you smoke out of anything but glass your missing out. A decent glass piece will last you many years if you treat it with care.
 
I've droped about 9 or 10 glass pirex billy's from nodding of on codeine/prometh.And i dropped a mates billy same way. But what pissed me off most was 2 brand new billy's complete we're stolen by police at Hornsby station. In my bag i had an ice pipe (i hate ice and what it does to people but thought i could use it for DMT), i also had .5g of weed and 600 codeine tablets all open loose in my bag. They didn't find the pipe (retards) i gave them the weed upfront to avoid a full search but didn't help. The senior cop rushed over to see the comotion only to say "if they were vallium or something we could arrest him but not for panadol (tylanol in US). Sorry to rant i'm still high on my first tramadol experience at 700mg. Stronger than eggs i tell ya. If anyone wants to know where to buy cheap pirex bongs around sydney i know a cheap place. Msg me. Peace out!

I've broken two pieces in my lifetime. Maybe three. My roomate broke a phatty Green Label RooR on a table when we were freshmen; never letting that one go.
 
I lost my first pipe, I dropped my second one about two weeks ago. It shattered when it hit a metal bar, then my fourth pipe dr.slaughter shattered at the bottom, no idea how. My third pipe is still in tact.
 
I've only broken one in near 10 years. My roommate, though, has broken two in the last year, mostly due to cats.
 
after breaking my 2nd piece, i bought a heavy duty glass one that you can throw around the room. i dont risk testing it out on rock hard concrete tho, but it can definitely withstand some pretty heavy blows.
 
I've broken about 7 in total I think. Just a few days ago I broke another one, I had that fucker for over one year, the longest yet. It gave the thickest hits. I got a new one, but it just isn't the same :( A few years ago when I was staying in an apartment with stone floors and granite countertops I had to buy a new bong almost every 2 or 3 months. Carpets (or wood floors) definitely help.
 
I've broken three in my life. But one wasn't mine, it was a good friends.

...I replaced it though, with a new one, of her favorite color. =D
 
Broke my favorite pipe about a year ago.

Was packing it into a sock to move... but didnt notice the sock had a hole in the toe, and it dropped right though. So stupid - broke it trying to keep it safe... And i've yet to find a pipe that i like nearly as much. It was this simple little thing, little curl in the middle, fit perfectly in the hand. I miss it - i actually stopped smoking my bong after i got it, it was that good.

Shortly after, i got a little 1-hit to replace it, and going in from it's maiden smoking, i'd put it into it's container (a cardboard tube that it fit perfectly in) but not put the lid on. A large moth that had followed me in landed on my shoulder, and, startled, i turned to face it, flinging my new piece across the room onto the concrete floor.

Bah. I miss that curly pipe. Never seen anything like it since. It makes me sad thinking about.
 
id say this is more a function of time than anything...also how likelky you are to buy a $10 piece so you have something to smoke out of as opposed to a $70+ spoon that will last you...but even those break, i broke my last one when my dog ran out into the street and I stood up too fast, sent it flying onto my concrete walkway, shattered it even though i had dropped it on tile a number of times....it had just had enough
 
this reminds me... one day i was packing a bowl in the school bathroom... and i drop my mini pipe :( It shattered everywhere. lol

so i went back to my class, grabbed my one-hitter, went back to the bathroom, and toked it up :D

karma might be a bitch, but it doesnt exist when you're super lit. hahaha
