How can you hold a Dope/Opiate habit for 5-10+years?

^not to sidetrack the thread, but what you describe above, about going to dangerous places to do dangerous things, is what draws a lot of people to heroin. Fortunately, I was never to the point where it was a "matter of desperation", but trips to the hood were always a big thrill for me.

who the hell said that I am speaking for everyone? And I dont care wat people say, I IV heroin, you take prescription opiates, the chemical difference aint a lot but the lifestyle is. when you spend all day hustling up money in the ghetto and spend more time on the block than at your house and live to shoot up in grimey ass bathrooms, run thru alley ways and walk thru the hood by your self with the wind whippin around you in the cold ass winter streets always lookin behind your shoulder worryin about cops n stick up kids and all kind of low life shit, its a hell of a lot different than picking up your pills from the pharmacy.

QFT being a heroin addict is so much more dangerous than getting pills from you doc.

Ive been on opiates for almost 5 years now but i get them legit for chronic pain. Unfortunatly i also like to get high off them so i end up going into withdrawals on average 4 times a year or so. When i start to run out of my MScontin i end up having to get by on my breakthrough meds which are either morphine IR's, dilaudid or sometimes oxy IR's. Thats how i often avoid WD.

Im trying to stick to my prescribed doses now because i actually do need them alot and when i run out im not only in WD pain but the chronic pain i have also comes back with a vengence. So withdrawals really suck if you happen to suffer from chronic pain cause your double fucked.

I totally agree with this. It is proof that prohibition does way more harm then good (in fact it does no good at all) because i have never had to break any laws due to the fact i can go pick up my pills at a pharmacy and most of them are covered by insurance. I never have to try and scrounge up some cash to feed a habit. There is no way i could afford a heroin habit without starving to death. A person who has to score on the street is going to end up in alot more trouble for no other reason then the fact that heroin is illegal.

There is little difference in alot of the opiates i get and heroin. Ive been scripted most opiates from shitty darvon up to fentanyl and i havent run into any major problems due to the drugs. Ironically the only drug ive ran into problems with is the good old legal drug alcohol. It's not because it's legal either it's because of the way it affects me. Opiates don't make me do stupid shit like alcohol does.

Definitely agree with that.

Sometimes I think part of the draw is just not giving a fuck. You know you shouldn't buy anything, you know you shouldn't go down to the city, but fuck it, be bad, go against the grain.

I've had a number of breaks and a several 4+ week periods of no use, but I've been using steadily for 3.5 years now, with several minor bouts before then. Time fuckin flies....the money does too.

I'm sorry Lacey but speak for yourself on that shit. I use pharms because I am prescribed them but I am able to maintain a pretty low tolerance only taking my stuff at night (2 years so far) and I keep a steady job. I actually work better when I'm on my meds. I don't feel like killing myself in fact I always look forward to the next day. I have friends that I met in my pain management clinic who have been on morphine for 10 years and are still doing fine. You just gotta be responsible and take care of your shit. And don't give me this "pain patients don't get high" I have a legitimate prescription for pain and I still feel the buzz from opiates. My life is in order and my tolerance is pretty low, maybe I'm lucky...but I know many other people in the same situation. Now if you start banging it, that's a different story. Your tolerance will sky rocket...

theres a diference to when ur prescribed to when ur buying dope on the streets, everyones different, just like u like to think you're doin fine, she has her opinions too...u say u work better on ur meds, that's a clear sign for an addict.

You clearly did not understand my point. saying "you" is referring to people that are heroin addicts such as my self, and its a generalization so of course there is exceptions. I am sure you are intelligent enough of a human being to understand this enough to not take everything 100% literally.

Once again, Ima explain my self. it seems like you are insisting that we are the same becuz you get high too and you done dope before so you know exactly wat im talking about. However if you did know, you wouldnt be saying the things that you are sayin. I wasnt talking about whether or not you get high or not. It was about the 2 different lifestyles. You say you can relate just becuz you have TRIED a substance (dope). Obviously you CANT relate becuz you talk about having a stable manageable life while taking opiates that are legally prescribed to you,and dosing them in the way that they are prescribed, and you took issue with me sayin that longterm opiate use can make your life crazy and unmanageable and fuck all your shit up. you personally take your pills as prescribed, THAT IS THE REASON your life is stable. ANYONE can life a stable life, if they are getting pills in a bottle and taking them how they are supposed to. You do not constantly have to struggle to get your fix, you aint runnin around the hood all day tryna figure out a plan, it is the THINGS A PERSON HAS TO DO, when addicted to heroin, that make life crazy not the actual drug it self. The thing is, that the things you do to get heroin are different than the things you do to get pills if the pills are prescribed to you.

The point i was makin, is that the life you lead is so far from the life that me and other heroin addicts live that it is just worlds apart, due to the legality of your drug and the ease of getting it, compared to the difficulty of gettin my DOC and the struggle associated with being able to get it. The bottom line is that the lifestyle associated with heroin abuse is different than scripted opiate use. it aint the drug itself that wears you down but the life that you have to live in order to get it. I dont think that is a concept that is very hard to understand , but I explained it in great lenths in my post before and you seem to be unable to understand it. Your life is together , stable, and calm with long term opiate use, because you get your shit from a doctor and go to the pharmacy to pick it up.

My life is chaotic, fucked up, and unpredictable with long term opiate use, becuz I shoot up heroin. Your life is relatively normal even with your drug use becuz you do normal things to get it and take normal doses and its legal. My life aint normal becuz the drug that i do causes me to need to go all kind of fucked up places and do fucked up things to get it and its always a struggle and a challenge to simply survive another day. It aint the drug, its the lifestyle , i say it one more time just in case it aint clear. I dont kno wat is the problem here that you aint getting wat I am saying. I aint tryin to be a dick to you but it really seems like you either cant understand, or are choosing to ignore the point, so i am sorry if it comes off like i am bein rude, but I think my words is falling on deaf ears anyways so i guess thats all i got to say for now.

Honestly, I always hear people say they have been doing H, or other opiates for 5+ years and I am just curious if there's some secret to supporting a habit for this long.

I know I shouldn't be doing opiates and they only lead you to a hole, but I am at a point in my life where I have little responsibilities and a lot of spending money.

You want to think about what you posted here. I have met people who did heroin for longer than 5 years. Even before I started using, I knew I couldn't have kept it up for that long. As years pass on and you continue to use, it becomes a quality of life issue. Despite having little responsibility and "a lot of spending money", you need to realize that no matter how much money you have, unless you're loaded to the point of being set for life, have enough money in a mutual fund that you're getting $50 to $100 grand a year back in interest alone, rich as fvkk whatever...you're still going to be able to go through a good portion of your money through heroin.

And the more money you have, the more stuff you can get. Personally, I am not rich...when I was using, I personally could never get over a gram at the most. Also, when I'd get a gram, it'd have to last me at least a few days if not closer to the better part of a week.

If you have enough money to buy a gram of heroin every day, and actually doing so isn't an issue...you really, REALLY need to reconsider going down that path. Ignoring the monetary aspect - if you don't mind spending through some money every day, that isn't necessarily a bad thing. There's a lot of drugs one can do every now and then and have a great time. However, I plead to you to hear me out.

I've met someone who had the money to be supporting whatever habit they wanted. They got half an oz of heroin at a time (absolute most I've ever seen at one time...it was beautiful and I could have drooled looking at it).

This person...all they did was sit down and snort lines. They didn't really do much else but sit there and nod out. The occasional walk outside to have a cigarette or walk to the bathroom was as far as this person ventured. Watching someone sit in the same place for hours, snorting as much dope as they can...not a care in the world...

can you start to see why I'm trying to warn you about this?

If you don't have much to do in life (work, school, family, what have you etc..) then you can end up doing heroin and that's great and all...but if you have absolutely no responsibilities, you're going to end up not doing much or going anywhere.

If you have responsibilities and are using heroin, they can almost keep you in check (you have to use then go do life to come back to use, you can't avoid life and then have to avoid drugs to catch up with life - you find the perfect medium, even if you have to move hell and earth to achieve this medium). When I used, I didn't sit there and drool all over myself, and I surely didn't abuse the fuck out of it like it was cocaine.

For me, I would get where I would want to be (a good high), and would go out and do something for 4, maybe 6 hours. I wouldn't keep re-dosing every hour or so. For me, heroin was a great motivator to do essentially anything I needed to. I saw in others how heroin could distract people from being motivated, and can make you infinitely lazy when all you want to do is be led to the hole you speak of. For me, I avoided being pulled down into this hole. Some people leap down there as fast as they can.

Can you see the different parallels I'm trying to create here?

Just because one has a lot of extra spending money and few responsibilities doesn't mean they will end up becoming a sedentary junkie. And just because someone lacks money and has a lot of responsibilities doesn't mean they won't end up becoming a sedentary junkie (HOMELESS PEOPLE).

I just think you're more likely to do things if you need to, and to just "sit there" if you have nothing more to do but...well...sit there.

Does that make sense to anyone else here besides me?

At the beginning of December I had been using H for around 3 months and I was snorting 7-8 bags in one line, and it was only getting me high for an hour. I was consuming a brick in 2 days.
That's a very large tolerance. Most people would have turned to the needle at this point BTW, but the person I was referring to earlier in my post never IV'd, just snorted. I guess it's easier when you have enough money that it doesn't matter since you're going to go out and buy more anyways, so you choose to snort it. The person I was referring to, I saw them snort a whole gram in one line before...and I thought they were going to OD, but didn't, I was shocked.

I don't hang out with H users anymore, most of them are sketch balls anyways.

So I'm wondering is my tolerance so high because of my use of 80s in the past? Or is shooting really the answer? Does tolerance increase slower with IV use? Or do people misrepresent their use (i.e. I've been using for 6months combined but would say one year and exclude my sober time)? Do I just use to frequently? Is taking subs when you can't afford H in an active habit just keeping your tolerance to high? How can you hold a job and go through withdrawal (which would lower your tolerance right?)
Well, there's a lot of factors that are missing here. For one, your tolerance goes up because you're getting high in the same place over and over, and this is known as environmental tolerance. Typically, users complete their ritual in the same place, and eventually the cues that you see (every time leading up to using) signal your brain you're about to get a large dose of dope. Your body prepares itself by increasing heart rate, breathing, etc so as to counter the physical effects of the drug.

If you use in a new place than you used to, the environmental cues are missing, and you will get higher than usual because your body won't be expecting the dose.

Tolerance increases faster when you're using more frequently, whether that be IV or snorting. If you're snorting as much as you said you were, it's clear you're using too frequently. When snorting, you should wait 6 to 8 hours before re-dosing, and when IVing you should wait 4 to 8 hours, depending on how you feel. You can IV a lot in a little period of time, especially if you're trying to chase the rush you get within the first half hour after administration. However, if you space shots out by 4 hours minimum, your tolerance will still grow but it will grow at a much slower rate.

If you're snorting H like it's coke and you keep re-dosing every half hour, your tolerance will skyrocket very rapidly.

Is there something I am missing, or does having an opiate addiction just really suck this bad after only 3-6 months?
Yes, it gets hard within the first 6 months. And that's if you're slowly building up tolerance, not rapidly.

Finally, there are 2 final points I'd like to point out.

Your dose of suboxone is more than likely way too high for your tolerance and is only keeping it up, not helping you lower it (you shouldn't need to use more than 8mg of it a day, and 2mg to 4mg max per day is optimal). It might not be because you didn't post it, but most people get RX'd to 8mg 2x a day, and that shit's ridiculous, even when you're slamming that shit.

Last thing: if you are going to be a junkie, then you're going to be a junkie. You will eventually learn how often to IV based on your own individual body and how it effects you, and you'll do it as optimally as possible so as to get the max effect for every rush, and will be getting a rush every time.

You really don't want to do this though. It might seem all great and everything, but building up your tolerance to heroin for more than just a few months is a lot to handle, and I want to stress to you the importance of moderation.

I have met someone who used heroin for over 5 years (7 to be exact). She is an alcoholic, has cirrhosis of the liver, has hepatitis (C, but I'm not sure, could be B?), smokes cigarettes, and has (or has had, I haven't seen this person for years, I couldn't even tell you if they're still alive) obvious neurotic issues. You can tell she's still trying to get her life together after quitting IV heroin. If you do go down the road to IVing any drug, let alone heroin, please: don't share needles. Use a clean one every time. If you're that rich buy a lot of rigs and pass them out to anyone who wouldn't have used a fresh one every time otherwise. And before you try IVing any drug, do the research and be prepared to take care of a medical consequence to a missed shot, etc. Finally, it's important also to have people with experience on board, you don't want to be IVing your first time w/o anyone there that knows what's going on.

Honestly, if you have plenty of extra money, go out and buy an ounce or a QP of some dank weed. Smoke that for the next few months or however long it takes you to go through it. Afterwards you'll feel a lot better, knowing you didn't blow through the same amount of money for a way shorter period of time. Hell if, LSD or mushrooms are around, buy some of those.

Stay away from heroin unless you're ready to go down such a path.

Yeah, YOUR life is. But please quit blaming the drug. I know people who shoot up, like I said my old dealer is an H addict. He is doing fine. He goes to the same college as me and is about to graduate with good grades. He does inject. All I am trying to say is not everyone that does H is in a terrible situation. Some people can maintain a dope habit. You might have to deal with shady people, but my old dealer only picks up once every 3 months in mass quantities. He only deals to close friends and has an actual job that he maintains. Sorry, but just because you can't maintain a stable life on H doesn't mean other people can't. Just like someone can throw their life away to alcohol, and others can maintain.

That is my opinion. I read all your posts, and I understand your opinion. Please quit acting like I'm ignoring you...I hear you loud and clear. And for the last time, I DONT TAKE "NORMAL" DOSES. Whatever the hell that means. Do you understand that fentanyl is 81 times more potent than morphine? I go through it quicker than I'm prescribed..this is why I have suboxone on hand for when I run out. Just because I maintain a low tolerance doesn't mean I don't get fucked up. Just because it takes more for you to get fucked up doesn't mean it effects us differently. I wish YOU could understand that H isn't in some special class, I know plenty of H addicts that enjoy other opiates as well.

Now, if you believe that it is impossible to maintain a stable life on dope, then fine. We can agree to disagree. There is no way we're going to convince the other side to change their opinion. You've been through enough to form your opinion, and I respect that. Just please don't act like I'm misunderstood or something, before I was prescribed I was involved in street drugs so I have seen some shit. I know New Jersey has a bigger problem then the south but again, I've seen H addicts maintain a stable life. I think we'll have to leave it "agree to disagree".

Newbie, give your shit up, you are failing to see the point in laceys posts.

Now that Captain Heroin has pointed out to me what she meant this whole time, I agree 100%. I officially give me shit up, lol (no sarcasm intended).

I think y'all are refusing to read my posts simply because my screen name is "newbie". Well whatever, if you think that defines who I am then I will give my shit up...go back to your unstable lives.

Actually, you're drawing inferences and making assumptions that just simply aren't true.

I think you're refusing to read other people's posts, and you have an unstable life, and used reaction formation by calling out other people.

Ignore my posts, you are completely right. Sorry Lacey for not understanding your point.

I see.

I used heroin for quite some time and my life was chaotic, but it wasn't due to heroin use. Heroin probably was the glue that held all the little parts together for me a while ago if anything.

The thing is, when you illegalize drugs, one has to go to longer lengths to get what they want, whereas legal drugs you just go to your local pharmacy and pick up whatever you want.

I think Lacey's point was that the illegality of heroin is what caused the chaoticness, and the societal conditions surrounding this phenomenon, not necessarily the drug itself but the way it is treated.

I'm sure if the US adopted the model of legalizing heroin, and providing it to addicts, you would solve a lot of the problems associated with chronic heroin abuse while still minimizing the number of deaths associated with the drug, etc.

Well I'm thinking about just deleting my posts because I now see the point everyone was trying to get through to me.

I agree 100% with Lacey that the fact that heroin is illegal causes a lot of problems. The drug laws in general cause a lot of problems. I am sorry for the confusion and I think I owe Lacey and everyone who had to read those posts a HUGE apology. I am going to delete my posts but don't think I'm trying to hide what I said; I said some really pointless things in light of what Captain Heroin pointed out to me that Lacey was really trying to say.

Sorry for all the trouble and lacey I NOW completely understand your point. Also mmmChris, you were right from the start... I should have given my shit up because I was missing the point.

Methadone and Buprenorphine. A year on either and most likely you'll be financially stable. Job, maybe 2 jobs, savings account, car, the whole 9 bourgois yards. A lot of addicts go on and off maintenance to maintain a habit- it is the best idea, too. Rather than going the homeless-prostitution route, its much easier and safer to take a few months or a year or 2 on MMT or BMT to collect your shit.

fukhed14 put a lot of it out there.

My main point to make is that you have to accept that you're going to be in withdrawal, almost all of the time. After a couple months of regular use, when the savings and checking accounts are overdrawn, when the CC are maxed out, when friends and family won't spot you $20 for gas, etc you won't be able to hold down a 9-5.

This happens to almost every addict at first.

My ex was a 'functional' addict. She used IV, never used more than 4 bags in a day, had a bottle of Suboxone when absolutely necessary. Never missed work. No one knew. She had this going for 6 or 7 years before going on MMT, and my guess is she's back using.

If you use to get high, rather than to stay well, your tolerance will shoot up fast and hard, withdrawals will set it in faster and faster, and be worse and worse. Everything crumbles around you fast.

I can't be a functional addict outside a maintenance program. Not enough discipline with the shot acting narcotics.

and the withdrawal would set in that much faster and be that much worse.

well your half right about that statement

i'm an iv user, if i was to snort 5 bags i would barely feel it and it wouldnt last for more than 2 hours and i would start getting sick but if i shot 5 bags(which is my regular dose) i get a rush but the high doesnt last long cause of my tolerance but i wouldnt need to do another shot for almost 6 hours. by then i would be starting to get sick.

so the affect lasts ALOT longer when i shoot vs. snorting.

BUT the withdrawel is alot worse (but at least it gives you more time to cop your next dose

But when all you can afford is a tiny dose to barely make you feel normal (whatever ROA you use) the w/d sets in a lot faster, 3-6 hours after that small dose.

Yea suboxone has kept me from missing any work days, hell I don't even miss the overtime days.

This is my problem though, I am really good at balancing bullshit and lying and being a shady douche. I mean hell last year I was dating a girl who hated even perc's and threatened to break up if I ever started using any opiates. She didn't know anything for 3 months as I managed to consume up to 8 80s a day (at my peak, or worst actually). And yes she knew pinpoint pupils meant being high, and yes I found my way around that. She only found out after my best friend ratted me out and I agree'd to go to rehab (mostly because I had run out of money).

But I have never really lost anything because of opiates, aside from a couple friends (who turned out not to be friends, just douche bags who used me for money/drugs). I still have the same job, same girl (kinda), same apartment, same car is still parked in the driveway cuz of liscense suspension(drunk driving).

I dunno like I said the main factor that keeps me buying subs and not dope is the money issue. I can keep everything in my life in check but my tolerance. It seems like because of it my tolerance goes up ridiculously fast. Even back in Dec I could never get high enough to dip/nod out, I do my bags one at a time back to back (hoping to avoid OD), rather than all in one line. And by the time I get a nice high going I've used so much that I can't rationalize going through more to get to the dip/nod out level of high.

I'm not gonna lie a lot of times it feels like one more straw is going to break my back, I am just saying up to this point in my life it has never got to the point where everything collapses and I start losing things important to me. And a lot of times I wonder if maybe I need a big kick in the ass like that to get me to realize first hand with what I'm gambling with, because I haven't seen the consequences yet.

For me, I avoided being pulled down into this hole. Some people leap down there as fast as they can.

Yea its a motivator for me as well, I love doing it at work (I do a decent amount of physical labor) I can work like a madman while on it. I like to do it when I go out to the bar, if my date is being an asshat I can go in the bathroom blow some bags come out and not give a fuck about whatever they are doing that would normally piss me off. Hell if I'm out anywhere where I don't want to be/or are bored, I love to have bags which make where ever I am fun. But yes the worst is when I am home with nothing to do and alone, not having a drivers liscense and living in a spot without much public transportation really leaves me with too much time to get fucked up.

But maybe redosing is my problem. The first opiate I fell in love with was OC, and when I switched to D i hated the fact that it lasts like half the time of an OC, so I would redose a little bump after an hour to keep the high running, but then occasionally when there's nothing stopping me from being high all day I will go nuts and then the next day I notice I barely get high at all.

If you're snorting H like it's coke and you keep re-dosing every half hour, your tolerance will skyrocket very rapidly

I am too afraid of OD'ing to snort my entire dose in one line, but If I decide to use again maybe I will try doing my initial dose a little faster so I get to where I want to be for atleast an hour and I can be somewhat satisfied and then stop until later in the day. I mean if I wake up sick, and snort a couple bags to feel normal, then my brain goes "hey you just did 2 bags, if you only do 5 more you will be feeling damn good, so technically you only need to spend 50$ at this moment to get high." Then after I think about it for 15 minutes and then end up giving in, the high wears off in like 45minutes so I'm not satisfied and I start doing more, and the cycle begins. So I am going to try and avoid this.

Hmm if I end up using again I am going to try and get high in random places to see if I get higher. I mentioned it before but the way I do D is open and snort one bag at a time until I am where I want to be, so hopefully this should avoid an OD because I can stop before I get to my full dose if I notice I am getting a lot higher because of where I am.

Aside from when I am switching from D to subs(I take a large amount as to avoid precip w/d) I try and take the least amount of sub that I can, just scraping little bumps off a 8mg throughout the day. But then after a week of doing this I realize "hey if I do 2 of these at once with some benadryl I will feel pretty nice" and then I do that for 2 days in a row and it stops working and I start to think about what else I could do to get high (i.e. D).

My new plan is to take whatever dose I think I need(the least possible) as soon as I wake up, so that way by the time I go to sleep I should be under said dose and detox a little extra while I am sleeping.

Last thing: if you are going to be a junkie, then you're going to be a junkie. You will eventually learn how often to IV based on your own individual body and how it effects you, and you'll do it as optimally as possible so as to get the max effect for every rush, and will be getting a rush every time.

I already know how to IV and have had people offer me clean needles, I just realized after making the switch from OC to D that its probably only going to lead me to a deeper hole. Unless for some magical reason tolerance went up slower with IV'ing, I kinda thought that maybe if your dose was high enough you could detox/sweat a lot of it out at night when you slept (I heard this from someone) which I guess is wrong thanks to BL's answers.

Meh, when I first started smoking I went nuts selling that and smoking an ounce a day. I don't like the way it makes me feel anymore. I am an ex-raver and I would not advise doing LSD/shrooms more than a handful of times, definitely not something you want to do to fill your spare time, they cause too many long-term problems. I also binge'd out on E years ago doing that sometimes on a daily basis and that got boring and I stopped on my own. A month or two ago I tried cocaine for the first time hoping to find something else that I could enjoy cheaply, and that was the biggest disappointment. I even smoked a bunch of crack, and that was a let down.

Thank you for your response capt. Yours was one of the most detailed an informative and was on topic (not dicksizing whos problem is the worst, like other people). I wanted to take the time to respond to you because you took the time for me, but do not think I was trying to argue with you. I tried to provide more information so maybe you could give me some more detailed answers. Thanks again.
