Its awsome that you came to bluelight about this because what youll read from other places that are fully against drug use and writen by people who have never done the drugs is bound to scare the shit out of you. Students usualy use adderol because it seriuosly does work for helping them focus on there school and its highly unlikely your son will get addicted to it. I meen he lives with you and now you know the signs of it so hell never get away with doing it every day.

Adderall can be abused, but amphetamine abuse is usually methamphetamine abuse. Like another poster said, I wouldn't recommend sending him to rehab for a few pills. That would be an overreaction, at best. Amphetamine use is fairly common in high-school and even more common in college. The bruxism (teeth grinding) is a common side effect, even at therapeutic doses. I'd say you're justified in being concerned, but it's most likely nothing for which serious action (like sending him to rehab) should be taken.

^^Except for the people telling this poor guy his kid might be on meth or crack. Not sure if stupid or trolling. Shame on you.

As someone who has both used Adderall recreationally, and someone who is now prescribed them now and uses them to study... I'd say just watch carefully.

Even in my upper-class neighborhood I was brought up in, at least 1/2 up to 3/4 of students would buy Adderall to study and cram for exams. These were good kids, not "druggies" by any means, and their use of Adderall (amphetamine) would be few and far between, and it never caused them issues. In fact, this drug has been used by SO many college students in the past decade that they're now trying to make a synthetic version of Adderall you can buy in stores without a prescription- boasting it as a "Cognitive Energy Booster."

However, as much as I hate this phrase, Adderall CAN be a "gateway drug" because if you use it too much, you develop a tolerance quite quickly, and someone MIGHT (key word: might) want to try other drugs to get a similar "rush" that Adderall gives them. Not to mention, you develop a tolerance to Adderall at an extremely fast rate. It can also cause problems if you use it in excess, especially if you have pre-existing heart conditions.
Even being prescribed Adderall for 6 months, I DO notice personality changes in myself. If I go without my Adderall, I get angry and throw fits very easily. After awhile, of course your personality goes back to normal, but this "withdrawal" period is still unpleasant. You begin to rely on the Adderall to motivate you because you can't motivate yourself.

All in all, just make sure he's not taking Adderall too frequently.
Chances are, he's not addicted, he's not a bad kid, he's not a "drug user"... he's just a typical teenager doing what most other teenagers are doing- using this medication to cram and do homework, and on occasion get a nice little kick while doing housework. I'd say if he's using them more than once a month, start to worry then.
For now, just make sure both you AND him are educated on the consequences of this medication. There's been around 100 reports of children dying because of medication like Adderall- then again, most of these kids had heart conditions.
Other medications similar to Adderall include Vyvanse and Ritalin- just so you're aware in case you find anymore pills.

Good luck, and if you have any more questions feel free to PM me.

Any un-monitored drug use is potentially dangerous, but no, he probably doesn't need rehab. For things to get caught doingm he picked a pretty benign drug, but it can cause some concerning effects and if used continually and irresponsibly, to amphetamine psychosis, a condition much like szchizophrenia.

You should have him evaluated for add or adhd as many people self medicate for that particular condition

There are tons of resources here on bl, please use them.

I have been prescribed to ADD meds since the 4th grade and they help me phenomenally in school. I immediately thought amphetamines upon reading that description, for I have done the same thing while on them! DO NOT SEND HIM TO REHAB FOR THAT! Rehab is HELL and he would come back angrier than ever before, and call you a horrible parent. I have met a few kids who were in my rehab for abusing amphetamines but they were extremely intellectual, bright kids.

By the way, in rehab your kid is going to meet some REAL druggies that are only going to put ideas in his head and make things way, way worse

Especially a rehab for adolescents where the vast majority of patients are kids forced in there by their parents against their will. They definitely don't want to recover or feel like they need to recover;
rehab for adolescents is like one big social gathering full of bad seeds where they can get together and swap drug-use strategies with each other (no offense to you other posters who have had your own experiences in an adolescent ward, but you know my description is spot on)

Your best option is to monitor your son; maybe even make an appointment with a doctor to get him tested for ADD. The doctor might conclude that Adderall is actually beneficial for your son, and prescribe it to him legitimately. That way, when your son wants to take adderall for studying, you will be the one to give him his adderall at a prescribed dosage and make sure he doesn't take too much or let it turn into a recreational thing

Okay, I am virtually certain this is not my son because he has been passed out on the couch for the last few hours, no where near a computer.

I did some research (google) on methamphetamine, and how dangerous it is etc. I checked the symptoms of use, and I know his teeth are fine (something about rotting teeth caused by meth mouth) but some of the other symptoms sort of matched up for this. The more I read about the drug, the more mortified I was becoming. I was kicking myself in the head, how the hell could I miss all the signs, he must have been using cocaine, or crack or heroin and marijuana for him to have lead himself up to METH, which is apparently one of the single most dangerous and life destroying drugs out their.
Meth use varies greatly by region. In places like the northeast, it is almost non-existent, but in most other regions in the US it is fairly common. In places like California it is not uncommon for 18 year olds to use it before even using other drugs. They may use it for the same reasons people use prescription amphetamines (to stay away so they can study, for weight loss, etc).

So about 15 minutes ago I decided to go wake him up on the couch and inquire if he was on any drugs. He denied and I of course got very upset and asked him if he has been using "meth". He was stunned at first but then sorta grinned and said of course not but his reaction made me feel like he was hiding something.

I gave him the ultimatum of kicking him out of the house (I may have been a bit harsh, but I truly never thought my son would be using drugs, let alone the worst drug that exists) or him taking a drug test, and if he is positive for any drugs I'd send him away to a rehab.

He then finally fest up and admitted he was using "study pills" that his friend gave him to try. I assumed this was bullshit at first but he told me he'd go and get the ones he had left. So I follow him to his room and he pulls out a small baggie of pills, their were 8 left in the baggie.

The pills say, "adderall XR" on the top part, and then "15mg" on the lower part of the pill. The top part is white and the bottom part is a see through blue with some sort of beads inside of it.

He said that his friend gets them as medication apparently, for ADD.

I'd always been a bit wary upon wether or not my son actually had ADD himself, because when he was younger I would get phone calls nearly every single day from teachers or the principle, because he was very very talkative in class and could never sit still and do work. This of course was disturbing the other children. All the teachers actually enjoyed him in their class (so they said), and thought he was quite a bright kid, but they always had trouble with him distracting other because he apparently had no attention span. (although when he sat down to do homework with me at home, and I could control him he could always do the work, and got good marks)

Eventually by the time he got older the problems slowed down, and from what I had read online about ADD meds, and how they can actually end up causing more problems or have a lasting impact on the patients personality, I just didn't want to risk it. I've always been a very drug free person, I rarely drink, have never smoked, and try my absolute best to avoid all pills, even tylenol when I have a head ache.
I was the same way when I was younger, but got through college alright without taking ADD meds aside from a handful of times. It can help with studying, but then you have to figure out what to do with yourself for the other 18 hours a day that you are still wired.

So are these meds really dangerous? I asked him how much he was taking because I didn't think a approved, legal drug would cause such a massive change in personality, to the point where he was almost being OCD about the cleaning, and the teeth grinding and lick lipping etc.

He said he would take 2, and then maybe a 3rd one later on if he began to feel tired. He promised me he had only used them a few times, for when he wanted to get homework he was behind on done. But that the effects lasted long enough that he felt he had to do something else and decided to clean.

So anyways, should this be a major concern for me? Are these pills abuseable and addictive, and should I have to send him to rehab for this?

I wouldn't hesitate to say that 30% of college students have experimented with ADD medications, particularly Adderall. Rehab would likely do more harm than good. The best thing to do will be to monitor him a bit. It seems that it's extremely obvious when he uses, so you should be able to tell if he continues using. He probably feels pretty shitty right now from the combination of 'coming down' and getting caught by his parents. Maybe that will be enough for him to reconsider his intent to use in the future, but only time will tell.

Don't send him to rehab for adderall, at 16 I was sent to rehab for abusing cough medicine(DXM), opiates (snorting and rarely), and occasionally some cid or molly and of course weed. Left rehab with and immediately started banging dope, pretty much anything water soluble and rush-worthy. Don't send a kid without a problem to a youth facility where kids are not trying to get better and are mainly forced upon going. Kids influence other kids, he'll be with people with actual drug problems who don't want to quit and will condone heavy drug use.

I'm not a parent and pretty young so I have no idea what you're going through but, best of you to both you and your son.

EDIT: Just read the 2 pages. sorry for being redudant.

SINCE I WAS LONG WINDED, I'LL LABEL EACH PARAGRAPH SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO READ EVERYTHING LOL

SUPPORTING DETAILS
Ya...don't send him to rehab...when I got caught smoking weed when I was younger and told I wasn't allowed to drive and was grounded to the house...I wouldn't come home after school, would get high as fuck, drink 8 oz bottles of robitussin at a time, started doing ecstasy (which gave me the curiosity to try meth as MDMA (ecstasy) is short for 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine, cocaine, acid, and shrooms, and even though I managed to graduate a year and a quarter early from high school, I got strung out on dope (meth) and didn't put that shit down for a LONG time...and still even do it once in a blue moon now that I've got my habit under control.

MY ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION
Don't allow your son to go out and get fucked up beyond all belief, but don't be Hitler to him either...the drug world (while it normally is just like the rest of the world) can be dangerous, and you don't want to piss him off to the point of doing anything just to spite you...I ended up selling bud for a little while and am now on a walking cane (this is 14 months post injury) because one of customers (that I hadn't met before) decided to drive off with me halfway inside their car window without paying for their stuff.

EXTRA COMMENTARY
If you wanna see what happened you can look at the picture below...It's one of me the morning after going to the ER (so this is me cleaned up and right before it got to looking worse) for this-when I showed up to my house before going I was covered in blood; my brother-in-law thought I got shot in the face.... Most potheads wouldn't do something like this, but after some investigating I found out he was a tweaker as well, so he had probably been up for a few days on meth-and no, I'm not trying to justify my assailant's behavior...not trying to do that AT ALL...but anyways...I'll shut up and show the pic...

I didn't read the whole post,it got cut in half for some reason, so I apologize for the rude remark s I just made.
I fully agree, don't send him to inpatient. That will do much more harm than good. Kids experiment, and this doesn't mean he will grow up to be an addict. You're a good parent for being so concerned.

It is 100% the ADD meds. THey give you a huge energy boost and extreme focus. Yes they are abuseable and addictive. Just sending your kid off to rehab isn't the answer. If he really does have a problem, he has to want to get clean. You can't force it on him.. but from the sound of it I don't think hes anywhere near needing rehab.

I will tell you this though.. drug users are masters of lying and manipulation. There is a good chance he admitted to using a 'legal' drug when there could be something more serious in reality. Who knows.. meth, ecstasy.. or maybe not. It's your child..there is no way for us to know. One thing you can do is ask him to take a drug test.

Remember, you cant force anythign on him.. all that will do is force him to retract, lie more, hide shit more. If he came to you in tears saying hbis life was falling apart hes addicted to drugs..that would be the time to send him to rehab. right now you need to figure out whats going on.. if its a little recreational add med use its snot that big of a deal. If he is injecting meth that is a big deal. You'd be rurpsied what goes on right under your nose.

Someone else also brought this up, but when I take Opiates I can clean like crazy. I wouldn't automatically say it's meth, or adderall (sp?).

This is true too..when I first ever tried buprenorphine I was on like a speed energyt boost high for a week striaght lol.

You should ask him to volunteer to take a drug test. Then youll see if he oces up positive for weed meth coke pcp all in one shot or if hes just using add pills lol
