Heroin usage and normal lives

I'm tempted to do heroin but theres a good chance I never will. I see addicts every day as I walk to college, people who have destroyed there lives with heroin. I cannot let this happen to me, and one part of me says I'd be stupid to even consider it.

Another part of me says its only a drug like the others. It may carry different and greater risks, but at the end of the day I've done nearly every other drug there is and I've never had any problems with addiction. Also I'm not so naive as to think I'm immune from addiction, I would treat this drug with the upmost of respect and caution.

I suppose my question is: is this possible? Are there people here who have done heroin before, enjoyed the experience and grown from it, yet not let it interfere with their lives?

Yes there are absolutely people that have done it and not become addicted. Have you done other opiates?

My 2 cents: Its possible;you just have to be very conscientious of your usage.

I've had experience with codiene. I've found it nice and warm, I can see how some people would get addicted to the stuff if they weren't careful.

If I was to do it it'd be once and then not again for a long time. I couldn't risk doing it as a weekend kind of thing, or even monthly.

Addiction is a slippery slope, but if you have willpower, you can do H once in awhile and not end up in the gutter.

I'm an opiate addict and I maintain a 'normal life,' i.e Job, friends, girlfriend, etc.

The best thing to do with heroin is to not ever try it. A lot of people go into it thinking addiction wont happen to them.

You're out of line being an elitist prick about it. I chose to let go of the wheel, and I chose when to stop and change my life- people like you don't understand. The fact that you don't understand the role addiction plays in the subjective psyche of the average addict means you don't have the capacity to handle it when you realize you stepped over the line. Not many people can, which is why so many people spend the rest of their lives wishing they never did it once, because they got blindsided by reality.

Dr.Dole (co-founder of Methadone maintenance) estimated that 1 in 50 people who try Heroin pursue the drug to dependance and addiction. This sounds pretty accurate, I've seen plenty of chippers, and people who tried it once and never did it again.

No one knows they are becoming addicted until they are already dependant and addicted, everyone thinks they've got it under control.

No one can tell you what to do. It sounds like you've already made up your mind. I wouldn't try that bourgois 'I can't afford to be like you people' line though, unless you like getting robbed.

i tried heroin in college about a handful of times, really enjoyed it, never got too carried away with it... But I think a lot of that had to do with the fact that I was in college and didn't have much money to spare for drugs.

Having said that, a couple of years out of college one of my friends approached me with an offer to try some of the heroin which he bought from one of his friends... And I gladly accepted... And over the next 5 years it slowly took over my life, because I had the money and honestly didn't think I'd let it turn into a regular thing. It basically left me with a hollowed-out shell of a life... And I'm not saying this happens to everyone, but *every single one of my friends* who ever let their occasional heroin use turn into daily use lived to regret it, in one way or another... And I'll let you fill in the rest. Not a pleasant way to spend your days.

I will say this though... If I had been able to simply leave my college experiences alone as they were, and not ever return to experimenting/using heroin beyond those few experiences, I think I totally would've been better off... Because I would've been glad to have had the benefit of the experience of one of the most lovely drugs known to man, but without any of the negatives that go along with regular use/addiction.

I didn't mean it in a "you people" kind of way. I meant that I can't afford to become an addict as it would destroy my family whom, despite all their flaws, I love dearly.

Also my dad would literally beat me to death.:\

Addiction is a hedonistic, narcissistic activity. You shouldn't be using drugs at all if your family and what they think mean that much to you. So I change my recommendation to do not try it once. You will live to regret it. Hard to hide a habit for too long, especially when stealing and mooching from family is a common occurence. Seeking treatment in private would be all but impossible too.

I think it's possible

There was actually a study done on occasional Heroin users/weekend users. There are people who use it on weekends or a couple times a month, and it in no way adversely effects their lives

Wish I could find the study for you, but I can't remember where it is

So, it's possible for you to do. However, it's dangerous. Not everyone has the willpower Only you know yourself though, so only you can make this decision.

Personally, I've been able to do drugs and not get addicted. I used to do the pod tea, without any dependence or tolerance. I know myself well enough to know I could try H a couple times, and have enough self control to avoid the pitfalls of addiction.

Bro... If you tried "Codiene," and you felt that warm, euphoric feeling to an extent, then IMO Heroin although stronger and more euphoric, is similar to codiene, oxycodone, hydrocodone, and all the others. The opium poppy is the opium poppy and which ever form of the plant you wana use, they all give very very similar feelings to the first time user. Stay away from heroin period, or until they find a really good way and affordable way to help heroin addicts. Semi-Synthetic Opioids are all very very similar.... If you enjoyed codiene well then, I"m glad and stick with what you know...... <3

A lot of people think this, but for many Heroin is much different from the rest. I was the same way as you with every other opioid I ever tried (Codeine, Hydro & Oxy Codone, Hydromorphone, PPT, Morphine etc).

IV Heroin especially is a different beast altogether. I don't think willpower is the factor, either. It has more to do with your personality in general. Willpower alone is not enough to change most behavior.

An inanimate powder does not ruin anybody's life. What ruins life is Prohibtion. Until the Harrison Act in the US you could buy anything OTC, or from the Sears Catalog, and so on. The average addict was a productive member of society. Once it is illegalised one has to comes up with a huge amount of money daily, and this causes them to ignore responsibilities like family, health, finances, and so on.

I have been an addict for 24 years, almost 25 and have done very well for myself, as have others. On a whole though, Prohibition has ruined many more lives.

I do agree that it's personality in general, rather than pure willpower

If I ever did H, I would snort it I think

Agreed as well. Another thing I'll add is that pharm grade heroin is not toxic in recreational doses; OD'ing can kill of course but long term use doesn't cause neurotoxicity or damage to you physically. IV may be the exception to this.

Of course I can't recommend anyone get hooked on street smack.

I have been an IV heroin user for a little over 5 years now. Sure I never planned on it. I was taken by surprise I knew before I ever tried it that it was beyond my control but I did it anyway. And most people regret it and say they wish they never did it but I dont. I am glad I did it because I cannot change the past so I accepted that and took what I could learn from it and kept it moving.
I just followed the path until I was ready to forge my own. You wont stop until your ready which may be never but for me I have gone from it being my life to getting on suboxone kicking and doing it a few times a month, But now I have a job, friends and finally Have gotten my family back.

That's all it comes down to. There isn't a drug on Earth that's so addictive that you'll get hooked after only a few uses. Don't buy into the hype. If you don't have an addictive personality, you have nothing to worry about. I've tried every drug I can get my hands on as well. None of them were ever that great. It's all the same crap.

In the end, the people who get hooked on drugs are the ones who were driven to drugs because of some other problem(s) in their life. The people who experience chronic physical or emotional pain are the ones who will perpetually try to remain in a drug induced numbness because being lucid is unbearable to them.

^I completely agree. I really enjoy the work of Bruce K. Alexander (rat park) who breaks down addiction as demonstrated in his and other animal studies to be pharmacologically relieving some form of distress.

And OP- I agree with others that there is no drug that is guaranteed to hook you, as also previously mentioned a very small number of heroin users (around 1 in 50 was mentioned) become physically dependent and habitual users and its less than 1 in 100 for coke. Heroin and other very potent opiates are used in HUGE numbers by individuals in chronic pain and when these people are disabled, its rarely from the drugs. Its the prohibition like rach said and the culture and lifestyle presently associated with these vices.
