Heart Attacks in 3 Teens Linked to K2

Those legal smoke blends are dubious, who knows wtf they are putting in that shit now a days. Back when jwh-018 was the usual main ingredient, they weren't as "nasty" of a feeling and never cause bad effects unless people used too much of the pure stuff. Anyways whatever is in some of these new blends sense most the jwh's have been banned must be some nasty toxic stuff.. who knows I hear that they are using crazy shit like some analog from tylenol, etc.

This makes five extreme cases in the past few months. Something is out there that wasn't out there before.

Agreed. At the very least the possibility needs to be thoroughly investigated. I have the full article and urinanalysis did not detect anything unusual: two of the three patients only had THC metabolites in their urine, the third had metabolites of JWH-073 and JWH-018.

that's not the only kind of heart attack. Sometimes it comes simply from a failure in cardiac tissue to withstand the extreme increase in blood pressure/heart rate... The same thing that causes crack/meth overdoses... tachycardia and hypertension are leading causes of heart attacks, worsened by clogged arteries which cause a rapid increase in blood pressure

As much of a dick as I feel like saying this..

Myocardial infarction (MI) or acute myocardial infarction (AMI), commonly known as a heart attack, results from the interruption of blood supply to a part of the heart, causing heart cells to die.

If a ventricle bursts, it's myocardial rupture.

But it's all similar.

No defamation meant. If I'm wrong still, you can correct me. But having done AP biology in 8th grade, in a class with mostly seniors, I think I know a bit about how the body works. Again, no offense.

If I sound like a total dickshit I'm really sorry. I'm tired and not good at not being a dickshit, ever.

Yeah the legal shit is really bad and can be very dangerous, especially if you're not sure which RC it is. Even then, the long-term effects are mostly unknown. Sounds like fun. Chemical Russian roulette.

Extremely sad state of affairs.

That's why I stick to good old-fashioned cannabis. =3

That's interesting, thanks for that update. I've been following this thread and read all the articles. Some atrticles still stand hard on their "fact" that marijuana can increase risk of heart attack and then the synthetics upping that risk even more. However if 2 only had THC metabolites and the other some JWH metabolites then what exactly happened? The articles doesn't state exactly what "K2" is. I know we all assume it's one of the newer synthetics. However a visit to the cannabis board shows many people using synthetics (as well as marijuana) heavily and not having heart attacks. We'd have heard if some of the older synthetics (like jwh-018 ) caused heart attacks more often at the rate they seem to be used.

So I agree to, something was out there different for these 3. Maybe some shady blend sprayed with something crazy. Some crazy gas station spraying some herbs with gasoline??

I should say although I am not a user of blends, about 2 years back I did have about 500 mgs of jwh-018. 1-2 milligrams proved to be an excellent substitute for marijuana. Occasional use only. And like LSD was to the 60's (feared and revered) I feel the synthetic cannabinoids are the same. The whole chromosome damage, legally insane BS that was thrown at LSD is similar to the stuff we see about a jwh substance. I agree caution is necessary and unknown blends are just plain dangerous, but I think there is more to this story.

Just my worthless opinion. =D If I need a cannabinoid I do stick with mj. But a small amount of a jwh seems ok too. I do not think these synthetic cannabinoids are poison. But I do think good ol mj is the thing to reach for. I just can't stand the media as well as doctors.

I have a girlfriend who smokes this garbage daily and has 300+ of those little zip-lock bags they come in... makes you wonder

Innit funny how 3 kids on drugs hits the news, but probably 300 died of all sorts of other obscure medical complications in the states on the same day, and... nada, zip, silencio!

Fuckin hippocratic hypocrites!

The job i do could test for mj, so I have 2 options, use synths, or stay clean. I don't live in the US so i have Kronic and Aroma blends, they do the job nicely, no side effects that I know of so far.

Gonna quit this job soon anyway and go back to organic ... yay!

its just sad that an herb like marijuana being illegal is pushing people to use these mystery chemical smoking blends, that no one really knows what's in each one sense now there is so many different ones.. last time i was in the smoke shop I didn't see K2 but i saw something called "K3" with same logo as the old "K2" packages

I have to disagree. I have known people for years getting irregular heart beat and all kinds of crazy scary side effects. so have most all of us. It is very narrow-minded to believe a synthetic drug sprayed on some incense couldn't trigger a heart attack, just because it's a cannabinoid. nobody's spraying gasoline on the herbs, just jwh synthetic shit. stick to weed, trust me.

and yes, technically marijuana could trigger a heart attack in somebody with extreme weight/cholesterol/general heart problems. Most good bud speeds up your heart like a stimulant for the first few minutes... Obviously this, combined with a slightly increased blood pressure does slightly elevate the chances of a heart attack. slightly.

But weed won't trigger a heart attack in a healthy individual. The K2 shit has weird fucking side effects not quite yet known, and everyone reacts differently to all drugs, so it's definitely going to have subjectively different effects based on the individual. There's always a small percent of people who have adverse reactions to everything, even regular old weed. Although regular weed won't almost kill you lol

These kids probably just got all freaked out and called 911 because they had a crazy heart beat. you see they survived...

I think it's narrow minded to take a new article at face value. Cannabinoids, synthetic or not, cause faster heartbeat. And most that went to the hopsital seemed to be ok in the end except these 3. If what HamHurricane says is true, then the article is only partially right.

Again, a trip to the cannabis board shows some real veterans using ungodly amounts of synthetic cannabinoids and are ok. Another look shows a lot of the same side effects of cannabis is shared by the synthetics. The fact that synthetics are full on agonists does probably make them more dangerous both physicially and mentally. I really do think people going to the hospital were freaking out. Most were sent home.

To automatically dismiss synthetic cannabinoids are "dangerous" slows down any studies that should be done with them. And the worst part of this article is no one is saying just what K2 is, so this really is a BAD article.

I can't say it's a bad article. Heart attacks in healthy teenagers are extremely rare. These were confirmed by EKG and elevated troponin levels, and the victims just happened to have consumed synthetics (each self-reported and one detected in tests). These weren't panic attacks or psychosomatic events; they were serious, life-threatening and clinically confirmed. The link to cannabinoids is indeed correlation and not evidence of causation. But couple these histories with the guy who died in South Carolina, and the fact that they were all teenagers, and the tendency of many novices to feel seriously fucked after smoking these blends, and you have to think that something may be rotten in the state of Denmark.

I live in texas and I don't believe there were ANY cannabinoids in the products they had. I have tried a lot of the post-ban blends and from what I can tell they most likely have 5-meo-dalt or related analogues. I have tried multiple brands, they all make me stimulated and I hallucinate. I also successfully made tea from some, and all cannabinoids are inactive orally. So yea.

I didn't read the article but I am lulzing hard because stories like these are the reason why the doctor at the emergency room asked me if I smoked synthetic cannabis. I was like no, wtf?!

I know this is an old thread but I just got my computers fixed and havent had alot of internet access.....

Why did he do it before B-Ball practice..... I mean this with NO...NO....NO animosity to anyone in a smaller college or a college that isn't super well known, BUT Anderson is number one full of ignorant meth heads for the most part and the college full of redneck ignorant miscreants who's parents were afraid to let them go to a normal University and forced them to a small, underfunded, college in one of my great states shittiest towns. Why he did it because in SC decent drugs are hard to come by but before basketball maybe he liked to smoke weed before he played?

There is A VERY VERY LARGE MISCONCEPTION in ROA I have been noticing that if it says JWH then its just like smoking weed, also I would venture to say he did not have the proper scales to measure out doses of the substance..... I am very close friends with the owners of two piercing/headshops in the Piedmont (Upstate SC) and both showed me the Police Report it was sent out to shops as part of the memorandum putting a temporary ban on "bath salts" and "marijuana like substances" in order to show the danger. Neither carried the salts, and one refused to carry any synthetics.

One more theory not on this particularl topic but.... the rise in the electronice music scene especially that which is all called "dubstep" now has led to a ENORMOUS rise in RC abuse here. I believe that the fact that kids want to emulate what they see or what they read about chemicals but do not take safety precautions, it seems to me at most shows I've been to 2-CI , 2-CE and 2-CB are not regarded as RC's anymore. Or this could be that most MDMA outside of Asheville and ATL sucks so replacements are trying to be found.
