Nov. 4, 2011 -- Three previously healthy Texas teens had heart attacks after smoking the "legal high" products sold under names such as K2 and Spice.

All three of the 16-year-old boys survived, report Colin Kane, MD, and colleagues at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Kane's team treated each of the boys. The teens obtained and smoked the K2 products in separate incidents.

"They certainly did damage to their hearts," Kane, a pediatric cardiologist, tells WebMD. "Hopefully there will be no long-term health implications, just a scare. But time will tell."

Each of the boys suffered chest pains one day to one week after smoking a K2 product. Examination at the emergency department showed that they had suffered the same kind of heart attacks.

It's not yet clear exactly how K2-type drugs cause heart attacks. There are reports in the medical literature of healthy young people having heart attacks after smoking marijuana. These reports are relatively rare, given how widely marijuana is used.

The heart effects of marijuana are likely due to the drug's ability to bind to cannabinoid receptors, switches on brain and body cells that trigger different functions. Synthetic cannabinoids bind more strongly to these switches than do the cannabinoids in marijuana. This results in stronger potency and more intense effects.

This makes five extreme cases in the past few months. Something is out there that wasn't out there before.

Maybe there's some toxic byproducts from synthesizing whatever jwh they use, in recent batches they've made.

From what I've read on other sites, some people believe the URB series of synthetic cannabinoids is having some nasty side effects-namely in that people mention that they are whats in the TX legal blends now since Texas made so many of them illegal.

Hm, weird. I'm not convinced these 3 incidents can be compared to that 13 year old though. Although there could be more going on here than most of us would have originally thought.

It definitely seems like something "got into the batch" though in my opinion. Since these 3 cases were all in Texas. I guess only time will tell unfortunately :\

Anyone remember when it was all over the news that marijuana increased the risk of heart attacks? Or that it grew man boobs? Ot that it caused severe chest pain? (that one was in the 70's) Most of us here would see an article like that now and say bullshit. Me? I just say bullshit to most journalism done for sensationalism. Especially Webmed.

So what doctor approved meds were they on? What else was happening?

some kid was smoking K2 here and supposedly had a heart attack while driving his car. crashed right into a house and died. his mom has been in the newspaper rallying troops and picketing smoke shops that sell it.

I have had several friends try this shit & they all got light headed & they felt their blood pressure shot up & were getting nauseated & had to lay down. Imo, I rather do coke than smoke this shit.

I just got done telling a few teenagers not to even think about smoking that stuff. I live in Texas as well.

same here. a few even went to the hospital. i don't think this is some "recent Texas thing", contaminated batch, etc. This has been going on for years...

Its pretty messed up that the desire for an alternative for a very benign drug like weed has essentially created a new hard drug. :X

This is the abstract:

Pediatrics. 2011 Nov 7. [Epub ahead of print]

Myocardial Infarction Associated With Use of the Synthetic Cannabinoid K2.

Mir A, Obafemi A, Young A, Kane C.

Division of Cardiology, Department of Pediatrics, and.

Designer drugs have been problematic over the years. Products such as K2 and
Spice, which contain synthetic cannabinoids, are marketed as incense and are
widely available on the Internet and at various specialty shops. The effects are
reported as cannabis-like after smoking them. In addition, use of these synthetic
cannabinoids will not appear on a routine urine toxicology screen. Recently, K2
became a popular alternative to marijuana among youths. Health implications of
these designer drugs are not completely understood. Little has been reported
about the harmful effects of K2. We report here the first (to our knowledge)
cases of myocardial infarction (MI) after smoking K2. Three patients presented
separately to the emergency department complaining of chest pain within days
after the use of K2. Acute MI was diagnosed in each case on the basis of
electrocardiogram changes and elevated troponin levels. Coronary angiography was
performed, and the results were normal for the first 2 patients. The incidence of
ST-elevation MI is low among teenagers, and association with drug use should be
suspected. Public education and awareness need to be heightened about the
possible health implications of K2.

It seems that, like the basketball player that died in South Carolina on October 4, these serious adverse effects are happening after the high has worn off. Maybe there is a cardiotoxic metabolite produced from one of the substances. Which substance was it, I wonder. The information is probably in the full text, which is not free.

The legal shit kills you the illegal shit doesn't

Geee golly! Great jarb with the drug legislation and prohibition guise!

I'm willing to bet my left nut that heart attack doesn't mean what it's supposed to in this case. I find it hard to believe that a drug could clog an artery all on its own with one use, and cause blockage, and death of heart muscle.

that's not the only kind of heart attack. Sometimes it comes simply from a failure in cardiac tissue to withstand the extreme increase in blood pressure/heart rate... The same thing that causes crack/meth overdoses... tachycardia and hypertension are leading causes of heart attacks, worsened by clogged arteries which cause a rapid increase in blood pressure
