Health trivia: Did you know? (Add yours)

God I have loads of sex with my boyfriend. Its really a good job we see each oither only twice a week because afterwards I ache, sometimes get a bit of the old honeymoon disease (cystitis), I feel a bit drained to be honest and just between you me and the rest of the millions of poeple on the internet - a bit sore.

Still weight just under 8 stone though and am 5 ft 3 ins so surely ashould be about 6.5 stone by now.

Every morning I blend berries (blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, red currants, black berries and a banana with natural yoghurt). Itys like a power injection.

THAT is my tip!

>>Huh...good question. I would have to say probably soy. You dont have too many options for protein sources as a veggie, do you?
>>

Ah..looking at your description below, I was thinking whole foods, not supplements.

>>Regardless, the deal is if you are serious about keeping away from an muscle catabolism and staying nitrogen positive through the night, but cannot take a slow absorbing protein like caesin, then my suggestion is to take you veggie protein (soy, or another) and wake up halfway through the night and take a shake.

Hah...hell no I'm not this serious. :)

Chewing Sugar free peppermint gum has many positive effects on the body. It helps fight cavities through the production of saliva, it increases your metabolism by constant movement of your jaw and the smell of the peppermint with the repetative jaw movement have been proved to increase concentration and memory by up to 35 percent. So get some Orbit today.

Ive heard that it isnt too good for the metabolism because of the chewing your stomach thinks its getting food and produces gastric juices ready to digest and when it doesnt get food it has a bad effect on the metabolism and its readiness for actual food.
Not sure how true this is, can anyone clear this up?

Yea it does stimulate the stomach to over produce gastic juices. And dont forget the artificial sweetners and/or sugar that go into gum can't be that good for you.

It's also been claimed that for people with mercury fillings, the constant chewing can release the mercury from their teeth which is then swallowed.

Your body will start to produce more gastric juices in preparation for the food but as no food will come; I believe the acidic juices just waste away at the mucous lining of your stomach causing ulcers.

Americans have essentially flipped the original food pyramid upside down according to recent diet trends.

Also: Carbs are needed for you to live. kthx

Most vegetable oils are bad to fry or even sautee with because they become denatured (i.e. oxidized) at common cooking temperatures. Coconut and palm oils are very healthy and safe to cook (and even deep fry) with. Get expeller pressed virgin oils whenever possible.

As many of you know I think any hydrogenated oils = the root of all evil. So obviously avoid these at all costs -- linked to a variety of issues, cardiovascular disease etc.

Edited for clarity.

It is an issue at normal cooking and yes, sauteeing temperatures, especially with olive oil which has a very low smoke point.

It killed me too, I love Italian food and used a lot of olive oil in cooking but I simply had to switch to others. Coconut oil doesn't have much flavour and it's sooo good for you. I also use a lot of butter (which is also safe to cook with) but I gather you are vegan?

Biiiig bump. Stumbled on this thread while searching for something else and whodathunkit that I've been wanting to start a thread like this!

Need to search later for the threads this one's alluding to and link back here. :P

As far as a health fact to add... Did you know that most beans/legumes contain more protein ounce for ounce than most meats?

Women have a better sense of smell than men.

The human brain has the capacity to store everything that you experience.

When you take a step, you are using up to 200 muscles.

Your ears secrete more earwax when you are afraid than when you aren't.
