hating college.

really don't think i'm meant for college.. but i don't have anything else to be doing.
i just want to travel and photograph. but i can't do that without money. but it's not like i'm making any money in college, but just wasting it.
You HAVE to grin and bear it. You will be fucked if you dont have at least a bachelors degree these days.

You can travel and all that after- just do it. Force yourself!
4 years goes by pretty fast!

ah.. if only i could believe you.
my highschool years went slow as anything.
and this time, i have less friends, more work.
i'm pretty sure it will feel megalonger.

You can do it. You have to do it. Otherwise you'll be SOL.
Have a myspace? I'll send you funny stuff to pass the time away!

I dunno.
I would say that college taken strictly as vocational training is at least somewhat dubious. I'm sure there are fields where 4 years of experience is every bit as valuable.
...
I'm a university of oregon alumnus. I would try to take a variety of classes until you find a set that are sufficiently interesting. That's what I did. Well, don't take advice from me. I take to school for no real good reason. Take a break if you feel you need one. It will be easier to do so now rather than later.

follow your dreams and if you end up poor and hopeless at least its because you were doing something you wanted to do instead of bullshitting thru life doin what youre "supposed" to and being hopeless inside.
That's true but there is something to be said for doing what you're "supposed" to.

You went to high school right? Why did you go? Because you were forced to, along with everyone else. Why do we force kids to go to school at a young age? Because the brain is an information sponge in childhood, so that is when you have to develop your mathematical and language skills. All the modern technology around us, the internet, modern medicine, is all made possible because we begin educating ourselves very early, so that once we are 40, we are intelligent, productive members of society. A brain capable of designing a complex machine does not spring out of thin air. It must be constructed, beginning at the earliest stages...in a stepwise fashion, in such a way that math, language, writing, and historical knowledge build on each other, eventually culminating in an individual who can imagine new things, and new ways to improve on our current tools.

A lot of pre-professional education is drudgery...from kindergarden on up through undergrad. And a lot of it is really hard. And it can totally suck at times. But this is all necessary, because how else are you going to make society run? I would rather be cured of a disease than have my portrait painted!

Photography is not a field where academic credentials are important, to my knowledge. You either reliably take good pictures or you don't. Also, a bachelors in photography is probably completely useless for non photog/artistic positions. I would make a serious assessment of what your goals are and whether college is the best way to achieve them.

^fair point; those members of my family who employ people in media - specifically print journalism in the US - don't even bother asking about degree qualifications anymore.

if you know what you want to do, speak to people in the industry. if you're still unsure, or just a bit fed up with your current program of study, then my advice is a) speak to someone at your university about it - they might be able to ofer some help and b) stick it out, knowing that it's better to come out with something than nothing (but debt, that is ;)).

I get what you two are saying. But college is not just about learning your major- ITs problem solving too. And I dont even know if the OP has any job experience. Sure she says she loves it but if she has no formal experience? Might be harder. I'm all for college. I've seen too many people, including myself, mess up certain aspects of their lives because they were not in a focused career state of mind. Does that statement make sense???? LOL

gutstains-
Check out this link- I pulled out Orgeon for photography positions.:)

I changed the 'he's to she's!
And you are welcome:)

seuss do you mean print as in just photos or articles too? because they do require the proper qualifications at most reputable places.

Actually Nope, i dropped out after my freshman year and it have never had the slightest little bit of regret. if i had the choice to go back and do it all again i would have left school even earlier. I never lived my life doin what i was supposed to, and if i did, im sure i woulda put a fucking bullet in my head by now.

Fuck . That.

And nah, i disagree, there aint shit to be said for doing what youre supposed to do. Why the fuck are you doing it? cuz everyone else does? then what is the reasoning behind that?

Dont get me wrong, i aint advocating doin stupid shit like "FUCK CONVENTION lets throw a molotov cocktail at a cop car!" Im just sayin that seriously, it makes me sick that like 75% of americas population goes to college, never thinking that there is other shit they can do. they just do it cuz its what theyre expected to do. Like no one even bothers to think outside the norm anymore cuz its "just what you do."

If thats all you do, why the fuck are you alive. Theres a lot of shit you can do in life, there aint one path that everyone must take, and there is no "right" thing to do as far as school goes. No, not going to school aint gonna end you up in a gutter. It aint gonna make you fucked over for the rest of your life. you aint gonna be SOL. It really aint that big of a fucking deal. people act like there is no life and you might as well just kill yourself if you dont go to college.

Its funny too cuz on a board of drug users who all have these "excersise your rights, free speech, dont let nobody hold you down, protest for what you believe in, fuck the status quo" attitudes on here, but all of a sudden when it comes to college its a bunch of cuddly little lambs that just lay down and do as theyre told....

Never believe that you cant make somethin out of yourself, the only thing that can hold you back from that is you.

Wtf kind of attitude is that. Youre like "well, you know, we DO need people to develop medicine and technology and science and all that."

We Need People To Do ART, MUSIC, AND ALL FORMS OF CREATIVITY TOO!!!

Do yall not recognize that everyone has their place?

Not everyone is meant to go to college! not everyone is meant to follow their own path because some cant handle it. and some cant handle goin to school to be "a productive member of society"

If everyone did like you said, and just buckled down and went to school to be someones office bitch, then who the hell would there be to do all the shit that AINT drudgery and mainstream?

Everyone is different yo, and there is no "majority." we all gotta do our own thang, and as long as whatever we do, we do it good, then thats all that matters. ;)

I dont go to school because I "am told". I go because I WANT to. I LIKE learning. I LIKE knowing i am increasing my worth as an employee later. I LIKE knowing I will have a degree and be an expert at what I do.

There are many many life choices and we all get to make our own.

edit: i also like knowing I will have the proper knowledge on how to maybe be self employed at some point

Ummm...school doesn't spout out future office workers (or professional-managerial staff in general) automatically.

i dunno how many americans go to college, but only arround a 1/4 of americans have a degree, graduating from college isnt the norm at all, i dont think anyone actually sticks through college that dosnt get some sort of enjoyment out of learning the stuff they teach you at college.

but back to the original poster, what kind of stuff did you do for fun back in florida, and what are you doing for fun now?
ive found a really hard time finding more than 60 hours a week of stuff to grind on that is actually school related, usually much less. i have to find other stuff i enjoy doing, otherwise i get a little nutty. i would really look into finding more extracurricular activities if i were you, theres tons of stuff to do at college besides school work.

Well obviously you are of the "college type." but, not everyone does go because they want to, they like it, or any combination of that.

All i was sayin that if you aint in the Dreamgirlie19 category, and in the "i hate college and have no interest in it, but im doing it for some reason because thats what im supposed to be doing" category, then you shouldnt be in college. :)

yea that is a bad situation to be in. But the fact remains that many times people have to be led down a path for a while until they "get it." What I'm saying is, 99% of people in college get to that point where they are thinking, "Wtf am I doing here, this is too hard, I can't do this. Maybe I wasn't cut out for it? I think I should just cut my losses and try to do something else."

But you can't quit just because of that! There are tons of people who, like you, may have said, "college is not for me, I have to do my own thing" and then later in life said "Wait a minute, I gotta go back to college....my life is uninteresting and boring and I want a challenge."

College forces you to delay instant gratification. It's tough, but if you know what it is, you'll be fine. I'm not sure why you think college exists to turn out non-thinking office workers. If anything, that's what happens to people who DON'T go to college these days. I'm in classes with hundreds of very bright people. Maybe this is just undergrad idealism but, I don't think I know one single person who is in college to become a mindless office worker! Everyone I hang with is going into medicine, pharmacy, nursing, optometry, dentistry....

All I'm saying is....nothing is gonna be easy. To make it in the business world without a college degree, you need a whole different set of skills and personality traits that many people simply don't have. It is certainly possible that the OP has those traits, but then again she may not. Maybe she DOES belong in college, but is going through that phase where you have to decide which path you want to take.

Thus, the best advice is not to "quit" and say fuck it. I say, stick it out, and keep thinking about what you want to do. Take classes, investigate careers....really look into what you want to do with your life. Most of all, think about your skills and personality, and how those relate to a potential career. Yea I know, it sounds like one of those worksheets they make you do....but trust me....this is what you want to be doing!

Exactly...theBUSINESS world.

you makin some very good points yo, i aint tryna argue w/ya, but i was just pointing out that it aint a death sentence to not go to school, and if you got enough determination and motivations youll make what you want, happen for yourself, and if you can do that without college, then thats a great thing . :)

I know people who never went to college and now work for large companies such as Verizon..they make over $85,000 a year, and are capped because they can not promote them any higher without a degree. Its good money but to know you could be doing so much more and cant because of a lack of a piece of paper that sucks imo.

Artsy, design careers can be done without degrees. Some others too but for the most part the mindless careers are the ones who never went to school.
