guiltiest pleasures, what is the least cool song that you really love

Rolf Harris.
:|

It used to simply be a guilty pleasure.
Now...i don't know what to think. Still got some of his LPs buried deep in my collection.
Oh Rolf.

Oh Rolf.

Oh dear mate. Oh fucking dear.

I must say though, Rolf was a shocker, i didn't expect such horrendous crimes (the worst of all kind) from him.

It sucks when performers you like turn out to be monsters. I never liked Bill Cosby and always thought he was an asshole who didn't really like anyone. Then I found out Louis CK was a creeper (less than bill, but still) and I still think he's hilarious. I also like Cee Lo Green, still love that voice but I wouldn't be cool with anyone I loved going near him, or Louis, or Rolf and shouldn't the justice system do something? Well they did in Rolf's case.

Cee Lo Green a sex offender too?

Yeah, it's a weird one - because i cannot in any way justify what he did, but i still feel sad for the fact that he was something of a soft target compared to the great many notorious creeps in the British Establishment.
Not that he is a victim - but seeing his fall from grace in his 80s was a shock.
He also grew up in my hometown, and all his art was taken from public display, plaques from buildings and so fourth in the city and the suburb he was raised in.
It raised a lot of questions to me about the nature of "art" and "the artist". Some people say "rot in hell, paedo" - but i really wonder if there is something in our culture that cannot deal with these kinds of perversions, in that artists who murder people are still respected - and not wiped out of history books for their transgressions.

Unlike (seriously, seriously evil) fuckers like Jimmy Savile, Rolf is a fucking talented guy (love him or hate him). But Savile had a get-out-of-jail-free card.
Again, i'm not trying to downplay or excuse Harris' crimes.

I didn't know about Louis CK...that's sad to hear.

Bit of a digression - but tbh i don't expect artists i respect (as artists) to be saintly people.
That's the trouble with celebrity culture - and tabloid media. I mean, some of my favourite rock stars (and rock'n'roll people generally - John Peel comes to mind) had dubious sexual histories, but this is (or i should say 'was'?) more accepted.

Having said that, a good friend of mine who was the victim of sexual abuse as a child was horrified that i have a bunch of Rolf Harris LPs. And that's fair.

Back on topic, i'll add another +1 to ABBA. Not all to my taste, but brilliant pop compositions, to be sure.

Speaking of disco, what about this one?

@Spacejunk - I think it's unfair of your friend to be horrified that you have Rolf LPs, you weren't to know for Christ sake! It's not as if you ran out and bought all his tunes after the trial.

oh man, you can't feel guilty about liking taylor swift. when people say they don't like her it's like when people say they don't care about money.

i clicked this thread to post ...

though i prefer the sans A$AP Rocky version.
Cheers to that, it came to mind immediately for me. I honestly don't really care for taylor though, probably because I despise country music. Yeah A$AP does kind of ruin it and he's not even really that good in it for his standards. It's nice that there are two versions though.

Along with selena, some of justin biebers knew songs are guilty pleasures. Can't help but get the chills.

Yes I am a heterosexual male.

Sia is a wee guilty pleasure for me - Elastic Heart and Chandelier are belters. I wouldn't dream of sticking those tracks on if the boys were round for a drink or two, I'd be pelted with a torrent of abuse...

I dunno, my current position is that I'll still enjoy the creation, but the creator should face the same penalties as anyone else.
My sentiments exactly. Some of my favourite artists are/were ghastly people - i try not to let their personal lives taint my appreciation for their art.
It's not always that simple though, is it?

Aaaaaanyway - guilty pleasures?!

Hey speaking of horrifying acts what about Gary Glitter? I can't believe people were shocked he was into lil ones, to me I was like yeah that makes sense!

It boggles my mind that so many celebrities were committing such acts, often together back stage or whatever. How the hell was this allowed to happen? Young people's lives ruined by such utter scum bags. Thinking they are going to see their hero at a concert or on Top Of The Pops, but they are actually monstrous and evil. Same with the church and other institutions that seem to have a large number of sexual predators involved with them, what the fuck is going on?

Don't forget all the brutal sexual transgressions that happen in the military and intelligence communities. All the highly competitive places with great power over a flock of the trusting.
I don't think there are lizard people from the center of the earth, but I can see how some think that way.
Damn, my wife should wake up so I can start digging for guilty music instead of what I'm doing. . .fuck it.

I think the permissiveness of the 'sexual revolution' broke down a lot of cultural barriers.
Some of them good, some of them very dark.

But society's attitudes towards children and sexuality has changed a lot in the last 30/40 years.
Teenage fans and groupies were a big part of the (ahem) "glamourous lifestyles" of many early pop and rock stars.
As society has moved on, many of these relationships have been re-examined or revealed to be inappropriate.

For example, the opening scene of the Sex Pistols' "Great Rock'n'Roll Swindle" has a naked 12 year old girl in it.
The re-release on dvd (from maybe 5 years ago, i think?) her body is blurred out.

Whereas in 1976, swearing on tv was a big deal. Times change.

A combination of society's recognition of a) the harm caused by sexual abuse/exploitation of children and b) a child's inability to give informed consent as well as a fair-sized dollop of media attention towards these kinds of sexual deviance have caused these changes, i think.

OK I don't have a You Tube account so can't post the videos but apparently I have many artists I like to listen to s long as my boys don't know,How about Boy George? No matter what you say about the guy he had an amazing voice and I love the song Black Dog. Also I find it Ironic they made a video based in the mid 1800's in the deep south because the one guy in his group is black and then you have um Boy George. I don't think it would have went well for either one of them!

Awesome thread namnoc. You've been enacting some good ones of late, thanks...

Rolf sucks. But, I don't think Louis CK is really a sex offender. Apparently, he hit of another comic, and that's it. The allegations are sort of that. :\

My guilt pleasure, shit. I like I Kissed A Girl by Katy Perry. It seriously trips me out. :D

I was talking about him liking to pull a Bill Clinton and whacking it in front of girls and not letting them leave the room. . .Damn the path from "I kissed a Girl" to "Dark Horse" was a weird one right?
