NEMD Grateful Dead Appreciation Thread

Anyone listen to the new Miller upgrade of 5/14/78? Great show(no ballad is kind of a downer though), check out the new source if you haven't yet.

i think vince ended up taking a lot of the blame that should have fallen on garcia being more interested in being wasted than rehearsing with the band or showing up more than physically every night.

i think a lot of his sounds were a little lame too, but you have to remember that cutler sucked compared to healy at live sound plus it was bralove picking his sounds instead of him - he wanted to play piano most of the time. plus brent's samples were awful too, he sounded like shit unless he was playing organ.

i think vince's songs were awful but so were brent's. i mean shit, i will take you home is such a total mind-sucking buzz kill, and to listen to it today is just a reminder of another drug overdose broken promise to a kid. fuck that shit.

I totally disagree. I liked most of Brent's songs and his sounds were amazing! Just my humble opinion.

I saw Brent's last show in Tinley Park, IL. The shows were total crap. Something just didn't seem right.

I know all about the amazing/endless live sets......and how great the dead were live, but i feel their greatest accomplishment is Terrapin Station(the song)...I'm talking about the studio version. It is second only the You Enjoy Myself(phish) as the greatest studio works of those bands labeled as "jam bands". Third on my list if you care is "rollover" string cheese.

7/23/90 had some moments....nice first set selections and set two has a killer Victim>Foolish, Terrapin, and SOTM.....and I really don't care much for post '83 Brent era GD.

I think Brent is pretty over rated in general, his sound almost completely blocks out Bobby's guitar for me.....then again I think Chimenti is the best pianist to ever play GD music :)

Brent is just so underrated :( He did a fuckin' lot for the band. Chimenti kills it, but really? Over Pigpen?

Thanks for the 90's suggestions. Most of these shows were excellent, but really I can see why a lot of people got off the bus...Some of the shows are fucking gems but then there are quite a few duds.

I can't wait for Furthur west coast tour! I will hopefully be seeing 6 dates, if I can save up a little bit of cash to get out to Santa Barbara. Everyone gettin' stoked??

I've been to six shows so far and would say Furthur is hit or miss...for the most part hit. I've seen four excellent shows(Cornell, Lehigh, Stroudsburg, and 7/10 Philly) and two weak shows (Delaware and Jim Thorpe)
I'm not really a big bass freak at all, but being at a show theres one thing for certain - Phil will dominate!

Feels weird not having them all over the east coast this next tour, will probably only get to the Baltimore show and maybe Reading.

I have seen 4 Furthur shows, and each has been above and beyond my expectations. If these shows are hit or miss I got hits each time; and two of them were past out of this world. San Francisco New Years was my first excellent one, the Cryptical Envelopment>Born Cross Eyed>Other One>Cryptical was an incredible experience.

But, if you didn't get a chance to hear the 3/6/10 show in Broomfield, CO you should go listen to it on archive or some shit IMMEDIATELY. It was cosmic in that venue, and I've never seen or heard anything like it. Standouts in my opinion are Bird Song, Alligator (killer!), Dark Star>Time>Dark Star (not the biggest fan of time as they do it, but this night it was unbelievable), We bid you Goodnight, and most especially MORNING DEW. It was a fucking incredible night, and really am hoping to see another show that lives up to that. Seems like they are on fire and getting better, or at least they were on the last tour. Even if I never see another show close to this quality, it was worth it <3

I am a west coast kid, so if I can raise a little bit of cash I will be doing all those, but I've already got my tickets for the three red rocks nights, and I know one of those will be spectacular.

Really liked the Steve Miller Band until I read he thought The Dead were crap, now not so sure about Miller. Shit.

Well he sat in with the GD at least once....check out 7/1/92 West L.A. Fadeaway...I usually don't care for guests but this is probably my favorite version of West L.A.

He wasn't a good fit, for a sit-in, or a tour opener. People, including me, didn't really dig it. Most people came in after he finished.

know VERY little of there music. if you had to reccomend just 3 cds which three would they bee?

Thats a tough one... I would say
Dick's Picks 19
Three From The Vault
The Closing of Winterland
My top three... Enjoy

Anyone here seen Furthur this year? Amazing stuff, I saw them at All Good and it was simply amazing, hopefully gonna catch them in Chicago and Minneapolis
