Grapefruit Juice FAQ

^diazepam is metabolised by 1A2, 2C9, 2C19, 3A4 and notably not 2D6. So what exactly is inhibited is not clear from that, but some assumption can be made as gfj is a weak inhibitor of 3A4.

From MIMS Australian pharmaceutical compilation:
Examples of some of the more potent CYP3A4 inhibitors
include the antifungals ketoconazole and itraconazole,
the protease inhibitors ritonavir, nelfinavir and indinavir,
and the macrolide antibiotics erythromycin and clarithromycin.

Less potent inhibitors include saquinavir, nefazodone, fluconazole,
grapefruit juice, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine and clotrimazole.

From that study one could assume gfj use with benzos (clonazepam/alprazolam) will slightly delay the peak plasma levels but the peak level will be higher and blood levels of the benzo will remain higher for a longer time. So all positive for benzos really unless you just want a whizz bang xanax hit pronto.

ey Madmike, dose some of your zolpidem with the codeine to throw the little 3A4 critters onto metabolising it instead of the morphine :)
ya sure?! reference?

'Golden grapefruit'-apparently has less acid=more potentiation?

Sorry to make yet another GFJ post, but I have here Waitrose's fresh golden grapefruit juice. One source said it was white, another that it wasn't. Can someone confirm that it's white? I know that fresh white GFJ is the best potentiator.

Is it the best potentiator of all drugs? benzos included?

Sorry, my real question is about acidity. I read that the golden grapefruit has less acid in it, is this better or worse for someone who plans to use it to potentiate clonazopam, codeine, and oxycodone? Doesn't a highly acidic stomach destroy opiates, making this a benefit?

I did UTFSE, but this is a very specific question, please help instead of flaming.

hehe nah, but no doubt it would be sweet. Just was thinking along the lines of keeping the 3a4 enzymes occupied metabolising something else instead of the morphine

I wonder if this effect is significant, and how it compares to actual inhibition of an enzyme rather than putting more load on it

Is zolpidem even metabolized by that enzyme?

Is it the best potentiator of all drugs? benzos included?

No. It will extend the high of drugs that would be metabolized into inactives by CYP3A4. Tying up an enzyme doesn't really give you a stronger high or anything, at least not to the point where you could reduce your dose. It'll make some drugs last a little longer. That's all.

this could have been answered before but the list at the begining doesnt mention it.

Does grapefruit potentiate Dihydrocodeine as well as codeine?

cheers

what brand of grapefruit juice do you guys find the most effective?

I ask this since as with juice, there are many types. For example, "all natural", or "natural but from concentrate," or "100 percent juice", or "no sugar added" etc etc. I just wanna know if it really matters...

Subs

hey all i've been lurking since 2004, im pretty good at using searches so i never really had a reason 2 post. u can find almost any question u have if you look hard enough. i've prob been lurkin longer than anybody lol

I wonder if any of this works for suboxone? any feedback would b appreciated........

hey guys,

does it really make a difference which color of grape fruit (NOT grape) juice i am using?
i mean, where the hell am i going to find white grapefruit juice? ive never seen it

^ A white grapefruit is actually yellow.

And it does make a difference, the red ones will have less of the chemicals in them you want.

But, you are better off getting tagamet (cimetidine) and not taking the risk that the grapefruit you buy has a natural variance in contents not in your favor.

It does not need to be "white" gfj
(tl,dr version, just read the last sentence)
White and colored grapefruit juice produce similar pharmacokinetic interactions.
Uesawa Y, Abe M, Mohri K.

Department of Pharmaceutics, Meiji Pharmaceutical University, Tokyo, Japan. [email protected]

Colored (pink and red) grapefruit pulp contains lower amounts of the furanocoumarin derivatives that cause pharmacokinetic interactions than white grapefruit pulp. However, few studies have examined interactions with colored juice products. Therefore, we examined the potential interactions of both white and colored grapefruit products by measuring the concentrations of furanocoumarin derivatives and inhibition of the metabolizing cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A enzymes, the target of the furanocoumarins. We measured concentrations of three major furanocoumarin derivatives, bergaptol, bergamottin, and 6',7'-dihydroxybergamottin, with high-performance liquid chromatography in 21 brands of grapefruit juice sold in Japan, including 14 white and 7 colored brands. The mean difference in bergaptol, bergamottin, and 6',7'-dihydroxybergamottin concentrations in white grapefruit juice samples was 1.59, 0.902, and 1.03 times, respectively, the amounts in colored samples. White samples inhibited CYP3A-mediated testosterone-6beta oxidation in human liver microsomes by 1.04 and 0.922 times (whole juice and furanocoumarin, respectively) the inhibition by colored juice. Thus, colored grapefruit juice may produce drug interactions at the same rate as white grapefruit juice.

Wow, this is some extremely confusing shit. Question:

In the first post of this thread, the OP said to drink 6-8 glasses of grapefruit juice before taking your medication for potentiation. That has to be a load of crap right? I mean if I drank that much grapefruit juice my stomach before taking my Xanax I would be so full I would probably be puking, and I thought you get better effects from drugs by taking them on an empty stomach, not a stomach full of grapefruit juice?

Basically PLEASE somebody just tell me this, if I am wanting to potentiate my Xanax:

a) How long before taking the Xanax do I drink the grapefruit juice?

b) How much grapefruit juice or how many glasses do I drink if I am drinking store bought 100% concentrate white grapefruit juice?

c) Does drinking grapefruit juice on a regular basis also help potentiate Xanax? Like if I drink it throughout the week occasionally will it help?

If someone can answer me these 3 questions I will be very grateful!

heroin or suboxone

didn't see anything in the thread about heroin or suboxone, i am a heroin addict trying to kick with suboxone, does gfj effect either of these, i have very little suboxone left and it would be great if some gfj would give ita little boost, feel me? so anyone have any insight on this?

Tagament is a drug prescribed for someone that presents with acid-reflux disorder.
Or you could say the person has a bad problem with heartburn. It reduces the acid
content in the stomach.
