Just heard an ungodly sound coming from my phone, and wondered what the fuck was going on. Ran to check, and it's HM Government.

Why was the wildfire announcement in an American accent?

I didn't hear any sounds as I was in the shower when it came through, but even so, seeing the headline GOVERNMENT ALERT freaked me out a little!

my buddy was in a pub, 100s of phones going off together.

We had a wild fire up north in the Cairngorms only last week ,you could smell the smoke from miles away
Don't think it made the National news ,but of course Londoners are known to panic ,I just hope it won't affect any demonstrations about Palistine or Isreal today

i feel safer already, it was some android OS level alert on my phone, not like a normal notification, proper flashing and alarm sound emergency shit, I never turned it on, not sure if you can turn it off either....would I want to turn it off? hmmm, I'm considering it but worth it for the entertainment value if nothing else.....although Europe appears to be on fire and it's now spread to the UK.

also some reports on reddit that some Londoners got it in Welsh, genius.

A very topical video, and although it takes the guy 8 minutes to say the few vital sentences that he thought the subject was not sufficiently serious to merit such communication measures, and the £3,000,0000 that it somehow cost the government (tax payers) to send that message! Plus it also caused a massive influx of calls to the emergency services over matters far too trivial to even be on the list, this could arguably have caused delays in responding to real emergencies.

I agree that it was misjudged, and is the first major bad move from this administration, imo. But hey ho, look at Donald Trump and all of his outrageous actions and statements, and I guess it puts this into perspective, of really not being all that bad!!



A lot of the comments below the video are very interesting imo, such as this one:

"The system was meant to be used for imminent crisis responses in which the government would not be able to help the majority population, such as extreme events such as imminent nuclear exchange, comet impact, invasion (terrestrial or extraterrestrial), or environmental catastrophes. Basically the service is to be used for situations that the people should know about, which would have such a wide-scale effect that the government might not be able to handle immediately, if at all.To then use this system to tell dumbasses not to light fires near or on very dry vegetation is ridiculous. and several mention blocking these announcements, especially now they've been used for a matter that would have been far more appropriately handled by issuing news reports across all TV and radio channels, all online news outlets, and all social media, .. Arguably that method would have also reached more of the population, especially considering the very elderly, many of whom do not have mobile phones, ime.

tl;dr a bad governmental misjudgement to sent out this message in this format.

I remember when Trump did that, he put out a presidential alert thing and everybody thought it was gonna be just for him to rant but gladly it was only used once as far as I recall.

I live in the States and when I had cable I used to regularly get these emergency alert tests popping up on the tv. This super loud voice saying "this is a monthly test of our emergency alert system........." followed by an air- raid siren blaring. It was at least 5x louder than the volume of what was on the tv. It happened at least once a week in spite of the voice claiming it was a monthly test. Also; it'd happen late at night when I'd usually just have on one of the Music Choice channels which would just play music; they had a different station for every genre and era of music. I don't handle sudden loud noises well and it'd always give me a panic attack.

This was just one random guys comment under the video. It wasn't an official government announcement or anything like that.

Could be a few reasons for that?

Maybe if your phone was switched off it might not have been able to received and store the message for display once the power was restored? Maybe you're using an un-registered 'burner phone'? Or just not using a phone number that you've used to register on any you.gov websites etc?

Or maybe you've switched off receiving such messages in your phones settings, which I gather from the comments is something that many people have already done, or will do now, following on from this alert.

I was quite shaken up, as a phone I keep as backup with no SIM also sounded the alarm!

Turns out there's also an option for Internet alerts and I hadn't disabled it.

I never got the alert but I'm assuming it was from the UK government
