Right first of all sorry I know Australia=/=Indonesia but there doesn't appear to be an Asian drugs forum and probably more of you Australians have made it there than the Europeans.

I'm going to Indonesia in a few weeks and while I'm there, I will be keeping a very low drugs profile (Just drinking some booze in bars for foreigners) but during my day to day life, I smoke enough weed to probably show up on a drugs test and done some RC's which prolly wouldnt show up.

So my question is, because I've heard some rumours, is this an issue? I've heard what are almost certainly urban myths that on Immigration, they randomly pick people, do a drugs test and if positive send them back or lock them up.

I would have thought that as long as I keep a low profile when there, I'm fine but just asking if anybody has heard any of these horror stories and could calm the mind? Would be appreciated.

I know they do this in Singapore, but I think it is mainly (or only) done to singaporian nationals, and not a regular thing.

I don't about indonesia.

I can't see them doing it to some foreigner who hasn't got drugs on him. I doubt Indonesia would want the diplomatic backlash.

Be very careful with drugs in SE Asia - I personally would advise against using altogether whilt there. I haven't been to Indonesia, but if it is anything like Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia or Laos. Set ups are common (buy and bust), and you might think you can bribe your way out but the bribes can be huge. 1 ecstasy pill at a full moon party will cost you min $1000 and that is if you can negogiate a bribe. And you have to pay then and there, or bye bye to you.

My mate got done in thailand for 3 grams of weed at a police checkpoint on a highway. He spent a few weeks in jail (like 20 people a room) before going to court. He is a white guy, but can speak fluent thai (he's lived there most his life). His parents were prepared to spot him like $7000 to get him out of jail. Guess what, the police wouldn't take it. So he went to court, and got a fine and a 5 year suspended sentence (if he didn't have connections it would of been worse).

So yeah, corruption and your western money will not always save your arse in SE Asia.

Rule 1: When in Indonesia never buy or use illegal drugs ever.
Rule 2: See rule 1.

Unless you want to take the chance of losing your life so you can have a puff over there don't even think about using drugs.

And I don't think you will be drug tested when arriving to their airport just so they can send you back home. I don't think they have a right to deny you entry to any country if you don't provide a urine sample when you get there.

not sure if this happens in indonesia but my friend just came back from singapore and said that the authorities can randomly storm into nightclubs and do random piss tests to screen for illicit drugs on the spot. If they come back positive, they'll take you into custody.
Can anyone shed some light on this?

Not 100% certain, but I'd be highly suprised if Indonesia would storm night clubs for random tests.

Singapore has some one of the most harsh drug policy in the world, makes our laws look like a joke. But I think Indonesia are quite alot more friendly, but yeah play it safe, don't do any whilst ure over there.

i heard magic mushrooms are legal in bali or is this false and just another jail/bribe scam?

Pirate attacks and armed robbery against ships occur in coastal waters. Mariners should take appropriate precautions. For additional information, see the Live Piracy Report published by the International Maritime Bureau.
Holy shit.

I think a random drug test would be unlikely.

indeed, I have read on some government's safetravel sights that they test at random but there again, those same sights are full of the same old bullshit propaganda, there is a HIGH RISK of being victim of a terrorist attack and one should avoid all unncessary travel.

Let me be clear about this, I won't be smoking weed when there, I was just slightly concerned about all these warnings imagining myself walking down the road taking in the sights and some cops just forcing me to give a urine sample. This seems highly unlikely but of course, if it did happen and I tested positive, this would be potentially very bad news

So yeah, advice from anybody who has been there would be much appreciated

Be very careful on your trip to Indo. Corruption runs deep and tourists are an easy target.

A friend and I were framed with a small amount of weed by cops in Lombok. We each had to pay a $500 bribe or face jail.

I was shitting so hard that it took me 3 goes to get my pin number right at the ATM!

You don't even have to have drugs in your possession. If they want money, they will do whatever it takes to ruin your holiday.

That run in certainly killed my love for SE Asia

^^ wow Psilo, that really sucks... I guess the worst part is that in the end you have no choice: pay or go to jail. Getting done for drugs in Indonesia would be a nightmare.

I'm not too sure about this, but I think there might be a loophole where if you test positive and are a foreigner, it can be alright as long as you can somehow show that you did it in your country of origin... Then again, I was told that by a friend who likes to spit a lot of bullshit so don't rely on it :S

And Havokk, I would not risk it...

g_man: Pay the fuck up when they tell you to.

If they want money bad enough, you have no choice.

One time i was done driving here in vic unlicensed.. i had about $4000 in my wallet... I was so tempted to just offer it to the cop to get out of it all...

I didn't bother, when he mentioned that it was only going to cost me $300 to get my car out of impound. I giggled, said "oh, only $300"... the cop replied "only $300 you reckon".

Anyway 48hrs later and $300 out of pocket i had my car back.

So I'd see $500 to avoid a jail sentence in a 3rd world country a pretty fair deal. Even if I dd nothing wrong.

what would you suggest to do to avoid being framed?

There isn't much you can do. If you have been targeted then you have to pay up or face the Indonesian legal system :\

I haven't heard of anyone else getting framed in Lombok, but I know of other cases in Bali and Sumatra.

Just try to hide any wealth. This way they aren't as likely to target you.

^ don't know if they are actually legal. More likely the place that sells them pays protection money to the police to sell them. same shit that happens in thailand and laos.

Alot of the places in Laos, will tell 'do not take this out of the bar because if the police catch you will be arrested'.

As for the storming nightlcubs thing, it also happens in thailand. anyone found testing positive for drugs will be arrested.

steer clear of drugs in SE Asia. I was stupid and didn't, but thankfully am ok. It is a whole other ball game over there, and in the end your embassy can do very little. Even possession of small amounts of anything can be meet with 10+ years in jail, and these jails will make Barwon prison look like disney world.

As for set ups, I only ever had one experience of being set up. technically I broke the law - so maybe not a set up. I dropped a ciggarette butt on the ground in bangkok. anyone who has been to bangkok will no one cigarette is the least of its litter problems. A police officer had obviously been watching and quickly came and escorted me to a nearby booth.

i greeted the officer with my best and most respectful wai (a gesture on greeting and a sign of respect) and said, in Thai 'Sir, I am sorry'. I also said in thai - I have no problem with police. which must of been in reality, 'I am police - so there is no problem'. he looked a little worried for a while and asked me if I was a police officer, but I said I wasn't. he then was cheery and said because I spoke to him in Thai and am a good 'farang; (foreigner - probably because I called him sir and tried my best to show him he was the boss - something most foreigners don't do to thais in thaialnd). He said, 'normally 2000 baht fine ($70), but for you 500 baht ($20). i was about to fill out the paperwork for the fine, but he said not to worry about it and put the money in his pocket and wished me a good day.

So yeah corruption is alive and well. One friend of mine, was walking late at night in bangkok and got robbed by the police. they asked for ID and what he was doing, they asked to see his wallet. They then took all the money out and threw the wallet on the ground, then left.

As for avoiding scams and stitch ups. Be careful where you go when drunk, don't draw attention to yourself (by being obnoxious or looking to rich - ie. don't wear nice watches or gold chains - more chance of just been robbed in this situation). But the chances of you getting stitched up are probably low if you keep your nose clean and away from drugs. You will be offered drugs alot over there. Just remember that many of the dealers work in partnership with police for a cut of the bribe. And also, some officers may just need to make quoters. so a bribe might not be possible.

Keep away from drugs and you should be fine.

Having resided in a touristy part of Indonesia, knowing the locals, knowing the Expat community as well as knowing "What is What....who is who" I can state categorically that you should refrain from drug (illegal) use.

Fact: Corruption.
Fact: Set ups.
Fact: Jails.
Fact: Big Risks.
Fact: Highened propensity of being caught/busted/cheated/fucked.

Each year the risks increase over in Indonesia.

Just drink Bintangs or some nice cocktails upon the beach......you'll be doing yourself a big favour.

heres a tip: OTC Benzos... Pharmacists in SEA are your friends. Buy yourself some valium, go get drunk - then benzo away the hang over. win/win situation.

You can't get valium OTC in Bangkok. When you ask for it they make the "handcuffs" motion with their hands the same as when you ask for Codeine.

I was last there 3 years ago. I tried MBK, Phantip, Pratunam, Patpong and most of the tourist areas. I was denied everywhere. Lots of Tramal though.

Do you speak Thai?

I speak 'nit noi' Thai (a little bit). It definately helps if you can go in there and tell them that you are sick in thai and have a bit of a convo.

As for the MBK thing, I mean the pharmacie I remember in there are generally the chain ones, and hence 'fancy' and less likely to dole out valium.

I have and I know others whom have scored it bangkok, but also got knocked back plenty of places too. Cambodia and Laos is absolutely no hassles though.

its interesting that in thailand, they are really strict on codeine. you need a script from the doctor. I found this out after getting a nasty as fuck ear infection after Song Kran (Thai new year). All those water fights with filthy water is bound to caused havoc one way or another.

I find it really funny that they'll tell you how you'll go to jail for asking for Codeine but will sell you as much Tramal as you want.

We should probably get away from revealing locations as these threads have been closed before for sourcing. I know I am as much to blame as everyone else for this. I just realised this morning that some of the locations are starting to get pretty specific :)

Definitely stay away from weed and Yaba in Bangkok. That was one dodgy experience I would never go through again.
