Goa Trance

^^^I've meant to check out Mr Peculiar for a while, did you go to his album launch at Opeaia?

Panic_in_paradise, yeah I saw them about four years ago, I wasn't that familiar with psy back then and I really liked em.

Unless I'm mixing them up with Bumbling Loons who I may have seen on the same night. It would be good to rememeber, anyone go to the bliss indoor parties in melbourne over the last few years? I'm pretty sure GNOTR played with a bumbling loons closing set, to bumble home too.

Fuck my memory....

Shakit Shakta- Lepton Head I think thats the name....

They/he has atrack called Spiritual Beings In Physical Bodies, fantasic agori.

may not post when drinking :)

i always heard that they are phenominal live, did they break up?

QUOTE]

I wasn't at the launch, and I thought it was at Brown Alley?

He is fucking wickid. Great full-on with heaps of melody, little snatches of acoustic guitar here and there. I reccomend his Mind-Dala album to start off with, to get a taste for it before the new stuff. He has some older realeases and other stuff on compilations. Tracks to check out aside from the one's on Mind-Dala (African Soul and Born on Mars being my favorite, check out the synths after the vocal sample towards the end of the latter track, you'll know what I mean. :) ) Other tracks worth a listen: Funny Mushrooms, Crystal Myth, Storm Rider.

^^^Yeah you could be right, I thought he played at the Organik Magik party at Oeaia to launch his CD but I don't really know anything about him. Wanna link some info up perrrrhaps? Is he from melbourne? (thread hijackery)

Panic, I don't know if theyve broken up, I'm pretty sure green nuns were "side projects" of various bigger artists- i think green nuns is bilbo baggins side proj (cosmosis), and Bumbling Loons is James Monro (and someone?). They were both good live (it was the both I saw), I was a bit fucked up and it was years ago so I won't get too excited, but twas cool.

i miss goa. helped start the scene where i was back in 95'. how the hell did it ever become psy? there's like no melody or themes left in the tracks it seems. it all sounds the same to me lately...

goa. green nuns of the revolution, prana, transwave, koxbox, infinity project, indoor (shiva: the best song EVER), process, sandman, blah, blah....

I'm not sure how goa seemed to die off quite a lot, the production was never usually upto much but it still had so much substance to it, timeless music if you ask me.

The production on Psy Trance is superb, it seems to be a lot more bassline orientated but it doesn't usually have anything on the hypnotic melodies of goa trance.

^^^I gotta say that I'm tired of the crystalline production of psytrance- its probably the cleanest dirty music I've ever heard. Its definitely something to aspire to, but it makes everything sound samey

looking back at this thread i've realized that i was truly looking for goa. and i still am. i dunno what it is about goa that i love so much but i definitely think it has more substance and goa tracks tend to be less boring than psy.

Have you heard any of these artists?
Afgin, Ajna, Artifact303,E-Mantra, Ethereal, Filteria, Radical Distortion, Shakta?

They are all on a compilation called "Opus Iridium" that I've been listening to. Its more what I would consider to be an older goatrance sound (think Astral Projection), but the production techniques make it more modern sounding. Is that what you are looking for? If not, can you think of a good example of what you are after?

When I think of "goatrance" that is the sort of mental image I get, that sort of sound and aesthetic. Whenever I think "goa" I tend to conjure up thoughts of a slower trance sound, but not so much of that really specific acid-trance offshoot type sound. I think of complex layers of melodic sound, an earthen feel to it, sounds derived more directly from "organic" sources like bongo or a wooden flute or stick drawn across a washboard type surface... rather than something that can be produced entirely in software alone. That kind of a weird distinction to make I guess, but I can't ever get it out of my head and I think I get what people are trying to say mixed up a lot.

What I describing as how I see "goa" is my favorite style. A lot of modern pysdub is off that direction I guess. If you like stuff like that, what are some of your personal favorites?

I'll be sure to check them out and let you know. Some good examples of the kind of sound I'm looking for:

Man with No Name - Teleport
Man with No Name - Sly Sd
Hallucinogen - LSD (and pretty much anything by Hallucinogen)
Astral Projection - Dancing Galaxy
Astral Projection - People Can Fly
Transwave - Land of Freedom

Yeah, I bet you'll like some of those artists then. Its all along the same lines, just with a more modern sound, largely due to better production tools that have come out over the years.

There's an all old school goa/psy party tommorow night in Melbourne. Nothing before 96 I think. Would love to go, but it's my best mate's birthday so we're going out to some Techno instead. Oh well.

Oh and fizzacyst, Radical Distortion are awesome (rhyme ftw). The opening track on that album with Mendark blows me away every time I hear it.

^Yeah, I'm going most likely....when I think of Goa, I tend to hear different kick drums....more emphasis on the music then programming. And yeh that opus iridium stuff is cool :)

In the meantime, you could listen to this song:

Opus Iridium is exactly the kind of music I'm looking for. I looked up the compilation on discogs and its on the same label with Goasia, another producer that I enjoy. I had originally thought that Goa has died out but I guess there are artists still making it, for that I'm glad. How psy became more popular, I'll never know.
