Yeah i thought the same thing about Tor making it hard to detect alts. Some just stand out by their posting style though. I dont care really as it has nothing to do with me. I am a bit sad i missed all the blacked out aggro posts though. I am always asleep when the "fun" happens here.

It would have only been one or two earned on the day in question. The others were either pre-existing or earned over a period of several months of creating malicious alts.

Up to a point. As Consumer said, over the longer term it's usually other factors than simple IP checks that catch people out when using alts. MSB & head_funk almost never fail IP checks but generally out themselves sooner or later.

You are correct though, the only realistic possibility for permabanned members starting a new account and keeping it longterm is to fly completely under the radar. More so than masking IP addies as they are not the only factor involved. It's admin kinda stuff really though so I won't pretend to know all the details of how decisions are made - how much circumstantial evidence, and how strong it needs to be, to close an account as an alt.

I just googled head_funk bluelight and read a thread about him. Is he still making alts? I thought the alt character was Sammy G? Anyway you guys seem well onto it.

I think its time for me to go to bed. If i could only get myself out of these disgusting underpants of FUBAR's. How do i end up in these positions? This is way worse than being trapped under his bed in his fishnets surrounded by rotting marine life. I really have sunk to a new low.
 
head_funk has been around for as long as I can remember (circa 2003) - he still posts, I still recognise his posting style but no longer my job to get rid of the fucker.

I ditched an account that was the same / very similar to my name at Overgrow an old cannabis website whose servers got taken down by the Canadian cops and the US DEA. Being a very well known member of that site with thousands of incriminating photos i was a bit silly using a handle that was the same / similar. So i created Consumer. Pretty sure i used the same email addy to create both accounts. Never have been asked about this name being an alt which i guess it technically is but i had stopped using the other one, have never had an infraction nor am i using this account in any form of malicious way. But it is an alt account. My original account went back to the early 00's.

That shouldn't happen. Did you contact somebody on staff (ideally admin but any of us could pass it on) to clarify the switch of account? There should be no penalty for doing what you did unless somebody somewhere got the wrong end of the stick. Any points accrued mistakenly (due to crossed wires or any other "no fault" reason) should be removed if the situation is explained.

As for the malicious alt thing, I thought you were talking about a previous account for the individual behind the Gay Blade. I know you haven't ever created alt accounts and wasn't aware that anybody would suspect you of that tbh. Sounds like a misunderstanding to me - if there are warnings or infractions you received for any such misunderstanding drop myself, any other EADD mod, or somebody higher up the chain a PM and we'll try to get it sorted for you.

So do we. Comes down to that cumulative evidence thing again. That and any re-emergence of the type of behaviour that put him on the ban on sight list. As you noted above, if somebody really does play nice for a prolonged period it's far less likely they will come in for close scrutiny.

I didn't contact staff - I was hoping I could have some element of privacy in starting a new account and not have to bring up the old one, but hey ho.

Back then i never visited EADD. I just hung in the Aussie forum which was super busy back then. This was back in the Cowboy Mac , Phasedancer days. It was a much looser forum back then. Its a shame it is so quiet now. I guess most of those original crew are a lot older now and moved on to other things. I think SHM picked out Gay Blade as an alt pretty much straight away. It may have been someone else but i think it was SHM.

That reminded me of having to explain to my foreign temporary exchange student housemates at university that the massive syringe full of mushroom spores at the back of the fridge was mine and not to be touched...the horrified look on their faces, poor guise didn't have a clue what it was.

You can check your own infractions from your profile page I think. As you no doubt know, staff can too and it looks to me like any points wrongly issued for use of alt accounts have indeed been removed.

The privacy thing is tricky I agree. Best I can offer is that contacting admin about such things is generally kept entirely between you and them. Certainly wouldn't be made public. There are all sorts of perfectly legitimate reasons people may wish to start a fresh account and some of those would certainly include privacy concerns of one kind or another. It's only people who abuse the system trying to shed points before they expire naturally or are creating alts to cause shit that are seen as problematic. Unfortunately we do get a lot of it in EADD and that means the system goes on high alert at times when there's a flurry in full effect. Think I was the last person to discover your previous identity and I must confess I missed anything that happened prior to the blackout you mention - was only after that that somebody told me who you were previously :o
 
Well a member made it their mission to try and spread the word as to who my previous account was, making the whole thing pointless and redundant in the end anyway.

In the very near future I may wish to start a new account fresh from any prior connection to this one - I suppose I'll contact an admin when the time comes.

That's a very modest assessment of the situation, i reckon.
There are a couple of notable moderators who have developed such a knack for identifying prolific alt creators - from ridiculously subtle cues - often linguistic, or, y'know - some other personality quirk....but jesus - not to blow smoke up yer arse shambles, but at times, your ability to positively ID alt-trolls is mind-blowing.

That fascistic "mr smokes blunts" character - people had been trying to sus out who that bastard was for months - you seemed to just happen to take a glance at a thread discussing him, and BAM - he's sent packing; back joylessly jerking-off on his jackboots in whatever part of the world unfortunate enough to have a hate-head such as he habituating there.
As soon as you saw him - you knew with absolute certainty who it was; all the other mods, smods and admins of the time were at a loss - but shambles has an amazing gift for spotting 'em.

Now - lots of these alts make it obvious as fuck - drop hints and generally make no effort to conceal their alt-itude; typical attention seeking behaviours....
but there have been a couple of cases where i think shambles' demonstrated some knack for recognising patterns in online personas indicate that he ought to be working for some draconian spy agency, solving mysteries, tracking down fugitive war criminals and shit like that.

But fuck that - shambles works for our fuckin' draconian spy agency (some top-secret harm-reduction focused spy group existing solely to let drug pigs communicate with other drug pigs, without getting hassled, harassed or harangued by the likes of that hopelessly horrible, humourless holocaust-humping hate whore who once used the handle "mr smokes blunts".
Not that it was political - far from it; just some arsehole troll propagating nazi bullshit on bluelight - without even being polite about it.

No bro. That was not me. I was one of the more well known Aussies there but beyond that i wont say.

Anyway good morning cunts. Fucking Wednesday here already and the surf is absolutely pumping and i have to work. Tempted to take the day off. I need to get out of these filthy underpants first.
