What's the difference? As far as I can see, justice is state-sanctioned, procedural revenge. Approved by God.

I just want to add that in the absence of more humane and rational alternatives, I can see the benefit in locking up people who are a danger to themselves and/or others. But not as punishment, simply as protection. I'd prefer we had the alternatives.
 
Prison is not supposed to be punishment. Not exactly anyway. Prison is meant to be for rehabilitation whilst also taken off the streets so they can't continue causing problems to others. The punishment part is simply the loss of freedom of movement. Unfortunately it's cheaper to just stick to the punishment part and skip on the rehabilitation (or at least attempted rehabilitation) so prisons are just warehouses for criminals that do little good for the prisoner or for society. Makes it an easy target for Heil readers to get all het up about "holiday camps" and stuff.

Sweden and Norway are well known (notorious?) for having very comfortable, humane prison conditions. And their rates of re-offending are very low. USA has a massive re-offending rate and their prisons are awful places. Treating prisoners nicely benefits wider society hugely, even if they don't 'deserve' it. No one seems to be interested in cold hard facts though. :(

edit: There is a thread on somethingawful.com (great forum), called 'the prison thread' which has a collection of stories from the American prison system. Truly horrifying reading. One thing that's always got me about it, is the way that man-on-man rape is socially acceptable in prisons there, to the point that jokes are made about it in popular culture. afaik, it is not considered ok in British prisons...
 
True. The rape thing is very much a US prison staple. I'm sure there must be some instances over here but is nothing like as common, expected or "acceptable". Nobody I've known who's been inside came across nor heard of such shenanigans anyway. American prisons are just horrific. Aren't they on Amnesty's list of institutions that practice torture or summat for the conditions and procedures they use?

I'm not saying prisons should be funfunfun, but - kinda like the drug prohibition/legalisation debate - what may at first glance seem to be pandering to criminals is in fact of great benefit to society as a whole and the criminals concerned. Win-win. Much cheaper too cos the recidivism and overall crime rates tend to be much lower.

Wasn't aware that the rape thing was a primarily American concern though, as tbh I've heard jokes made about it pretty much everywhere I've been/known people, so outside of the US included. Which just makes it more scary really.

Doesn't surprise me that people make jokes about it, even if it's not a common thing in our prisons (and I don't know, never been), as we've been bombarded with delighted by US culture for years.

That's a really interesting fact, that I sort of "knew" but hadn't thought about it properly.

I wonder if there's a direct correlation all the way along the scale, between perceived conditions, and reoffending.

Have you got any figures for the reoffending rates? For US, and Sweden or Norway?

Hah, yeah. And people do really joke about absolutely anything nowadays anyway. I've been told more rape jokes than I could ever remember, which tends to lead to awkward silences until they remember they can't joke about that with me. Awkward.
I wonder if it's a telivision/technological era thingy or if it's always been like that. Would be interesting to know.
