@Coltdan there is an American TV show where they do the same thing. To Catch A Predator is the name of the programme I think.
They reel in a peado over the internet by pretending to be a underage boy/girl and arrange a meet with the perv.
When the peado turns up at the meeting place they jump out on him, lights, camera,action.
I remember one time when the guy they caught was a serving police officer and fuck they were really pissed off with him for the shame he bought on their force.

I do hope you're kidding, Dan. Vigilantism is never a good thing. It's a terrible idea. Plus it's illegal. And entrapment. Totally irresponsible. Is just the same thing as that To Catch a Predator programme. Kinda funny to watch but such a wrongheaded approach to dealing with the problem.

And the reason they won't be getting "proper punishment" is cos they've been entrapped into committing a minor offence. Very bad road to go down. And I won't even grace the hanging comment with a reply.

Obviously I'm not standing up for paedo rights or owt, but vigilantism is just plain stoopid and a very bad idea all round.

Can they actually do someone for arranging to meet an underage person for sex, if the underage person is in fact a 30 year old journalist pretending to be under the legal age.What crime has been committed in this case?

Purrrrlease don't take it as me sticking up for phiddlers, I've just often wondered it, I've seen an internet/Sun newspaper journalist posting vids of himself doing the same thing, and he always says the videos and other evidence will be going to the police. And I wondered.

in a system with piss poor justice which from what ive read over the years is pretty much some fucked up joke, you think vigilantism isnt justifiable at all? and why wont you grace the hanging comment with a reply, theres some very fucked up sick people around that should be put down instead of given a crap "punishment" being funded by people who work their ass off. illegal and entrapment, who gives a shit

What SHM said. Said it t'other day in the Boston bombing thread - mob justice is no justice at all. If people have problems with the legal system then protest the legal system and campaign for change. Don't take the law into your own hands. Especially when you haven't a fukkin clue what you're doing. As Max pointed out above, there's a good chance they've ruined actual investigations into some of these people that could've put them away to be dealt with as the law sees fit but now they'll be getting a slap on the wrist at most.

And as for capital punishment, I won't grace the topic with much of anything because it's barbaric. State sanctioned murder is still murder. You can't claim the moral high ground if you've sunk as low as the scum you object to.

How easy it would be to start extending this mechanism to other groups, other parts of the net, other areas of life. If someone notices, just blame it on ‘mission creep’. Because we feel a natural distaste for those branded as paedophiles, who will oppose this regulation? After all, ‘it’s for the children’. Once it is accepted, though, there will be little to stop its expansion to embrace us all.

Justice is never rational. It is purely about an audience feeling better by the suffering of an individual.

I don't have a daughter, if I would I know I would not be happy about any harm coming to her at all. I would be enraged. But to abandon reason is to abondon the future, and I won't do it. To be involved in or support a lynching would leave me, as Shambles has said, just as low as those hypothetical rapists.

I also believe we can change our society to one where kidnapping and rape are not regular occurrences. This is what we should be working on, not vigilantism.
