Aye i've never bothered with laptops, just saved up n bought this shittie desktop a couple years ago and even though its battered and bruised (stumbling about on k) still going strong! Can even hook it up to 42'' lcd i got for £100 a few months back and watch shit, & with a wireless keyboard and mouse (£2 from carboot ) is as good as any laptop, got no desire to go and sit in mcdonalds/starbucks on the thing and look like a twat so only difference is much cheaper for much better

When I was looking for the cheapest smart phone on contract one of the deals was a galaxy for £13 a month plus a free tablet. I didnt bother cos I dont want a tablet but if you know someone who's getting a phone they could let you have the tablet?

The fan might just need compressed air/hoover to unclog it from dust Shambles. Also try out SpeedFan I had a similar issue were it was simply the fan packing in. Also if your on Windows you can set the Power Plan so less demand on the machine and the usual don't have 5 things open at once as now that the fans packed there's no way it'll handle it. I'd backup if you need what you can now just in case, I got a good few more months out of mine but it eventually packed in. Not sure whether you know any or all of that but they are worth a go!

Have tried all the various power options and none make any difference. Have also tried the diagnostic stuff (well, as far as I have any chance of understanding meself anyway) and not helped. I hoovered out all the fans a few days ago and after a brief moment of improvement (literally just a coupla hours or so) it was worse than ever again.

Fan has actually started up again sometime over the last hour (not due to me afaik) but still sounds far from healthy. Not saying it's gonna die on me tonight or owt... but it wouldn't surprise me if it did and even if not it's clearly fucked either cos I'm shite at computers or it was just shite to start off with. Probably a mixture of both...

As for phones, the one I just got is actually an Orange Pay as You Go one so Max's tip may be of use. Never tried Opera on me last (Vodafone) one but it wasn't having it with Firefox so might well give Opera a go if/when it comes to it. And as for contract phones, is not summat I've ever really considered as I can't really do monthly payments on anything - hence being in shtook with both me internetz and gas bills concurrently - but that is an amazingly cheap deal you found there B&W. Probably about what I'd have to pay in top-ups if I was on a mobile anyway. Especially good as I wouldn't be shelling out for line rental too. Is also probably worth looking into.

You can get a semi decent refurbed laptop from about £150 nowadays. Or a decentish new PC tower for the same price.

or

If you're prepared to send your lappy off to an EADDer to fix, for about £7-10 you can get a courier pick up from your house to collect a parcel (ie: your boxed lappy) and deliver it to wherever (most places in the UK), so if it's fixable that wouldn't cost too much to do. I'm sure there's a few EADDers who can do laptop repairs that would be willing to do yours for free.

That's just a few ideas, maybe others here might actually have some spare hardware lying around that they might be willing to donate.

In terms of paying for a refurb lappy or a new pc tower for you, I'd be willing to chip in if a collection was started. Could do a thread. I recon there'd easily be enough donators to build up a £150+ kitty for you.

Ha! Despite the whinging and complete lack of shame in accepting charity from anyone offering I'm certainly not expecting or hoping for me EADD chums to chip in to ease me 'puter woes. If anybody of a techy bent is up for giving it a onceover for little if any recompense beyond my undying gratitude then I certainly wouldn't object though. Have seen that you can pick up a decent 'puter for a very reasonably price these days but coming up with enough cash upfront to cover it just ain't possible right now and can't imagine when it would ever be. Would love a nice hassle-free 'puter that just worked properly even with the kinda ropey treatment they tend to get from me but if this lil fella can be salvaged then that'd be great too.

Back to lappy woes for a mo - provvy loans is not really summat that appeals oddly enough, Mr Monkey. Although since I paid off that single bill recently (and what a schoolboy error that turned out to be ) I've been fairly bombarded with credit card applications. Has crossed my mind that if it really comes to it I could bite the bullet and sell my soul to Masercard or whoever but can't imagine having access to other peoples' money and not having to worry how I'm gonna repay it til I've got even less than I do now would be such a wise move either. If nobody else has volunteered yet Shambles, I just had a chat with Nerdboy and he said he'll look at it for you if you want (free of charge etc). If someone else has already offered then keep it in mind for a reserve offer or whatever.

He does all my families and friends. My Dad is partially sighted and pretty clumsy after his stroke, and he uses his lappy as a food tray for his dinner too. Nerdboy usually hoovers 4ounces of baccy out of it and the remains of a ton of 'other' shit, so don't worry if it's a bit battered Shambles.

He sorted my other lappy out by soldering my jack at the back where the power supply goes because it was knackered.

Let me know via PM what you want to do etc. I'm off to bed now tho, so I wont see it till the morning.

If your lappy keeps overheating cause the fan keeps stopping I would try to use it as little as possible, but when you do use it, make sure the vents aren't covered. If they're underneath the lappy then make sure there's something underneath to prop up the bottom a bit so air can circulate and whatnot. avoid resting it on a cushion or anything that will make the situation worse.

Nerdboy also just linked me to a few decent refurb laptops he's been looking at to buy himself, all for about £100 delivered, so the prices are getting even better for a decent 2nd hand one

Many thanks Marmz (and Nerdboy) and others who have offered assistance. Main problem now (aside from the obvious) is which one of you fine techy folk should get the dubious honour of a visit from a bebuggered laptop. On the plus side, whoever has such dubious pleasure can at least save themselves the trouble of acquiring a fuckload of film and telly progs I've not gotten round to watching yet. Not much in the way of tunes though cos they're all on me external hd and mostly out of reach for a lowly Windows 'puter. Although I did actually manage to get into it through a Linux distro via Virtualbox whilst on me peev holiday. Was like being reintroduced to a long lost lover and finding the flame was burning as strong as ever

Shambles, I'd happily have a look at your laptop for you. I suspect there's a few others who'd be willing & far more qualified then myself though. Anything I could do I could probably talk you through on the phone so prolly best to get someone else on the case. The offer does stand though. I'd also be willing chip in a little bit of cash (only talking a tenner or so as I'm a bit skint but if a few of us do it I'm sure we can get enough together for a decent repair) I'd hate to see you vanish again, you're an EADD essential.
