Ya. Was a good read as a travelogue piece. Would love to go a-questing for opium dens. Can quite believe you'd meet some interesting folks. Not sure I'd fancy the dodging bullets evading local security folk in the company of a yaba'd up nutter so much but definitely added to the tale :D

The part in Cambodia was quite good, I would love to be sitting under the night sky smoking opium.

I can't believe how it has almost completely disappeared, I mean it seems to have a lot less stigma than other opiates, I know a lot of people who would try yet would never consider heroin or even oxy and other pharmas, there could be quite a decent potential market.

I think it's more about profit margins than anything else, Kenny. I have no doubt there'd be a decent-sized market for opium but i can't see anybody being able to organise enough supply to ever meet it. Opium is still available now and then but is very much a niche thing. Bit of a closed world really. Have come across it a coupla times but never for very long. Find yourself a friendly Turk ;)

Disclaimer: I'm well aware not all Turkish people supply or use opium. Other nationalities are available.

The only time I ever found opium was totally randomly off a few Spanish squatters in Italy. I had been to band practice and was walking in the city center with dreadlocks and a guitar when this group of squatter types from Spain asked me if I knew where this well-known local squat was. As back then I used to go to punk gigs in that squat very often I offered to walk them there as it wasn't far away.

Anyway we got chatting and they went like "quieres opium?". Back then I was strictly a stoner, with the occasional mushroom trip when I could source them, still opium was something that always interested me. Gave them 20,000 liras(only like ten euros in today's money) and got this small chunk, told me it was for chewing only. I obviously didn't listen to them and tried to smoke some in a bong without water on top of some weed, but it was damp and didn't burn properly, so I ended up chewing it as I was told. I remember it was quite good but weak, I probably expected a lot more from it.

I really wouldn't mind finding more, that was like maybe 12 years ago or something like that, was probably around 16 or 17 at the time.

I'd presume that it was probably unrefined, raw opium if it was for chewing rather than smoking. Wouldn't really be all that hard to grow enough poppies to cultivate a smidge of that I suppose. My stepdad grew loads of opium poppies in his back garden with no problem. Never harvested the resin tho cos that may've been a bit sketchy...

Have only ever smoked (well, vaped mostly) opium. Had dark, resinous stuff years ago (Indian, I think) that was okay but fairly mild and still had bits of straw and stuff in. Was £10 per "bead" (dunno how much in weight but pretty small - gramme at most and probably less). That was almost 20 years ago. Had some far better quality a coupla years back. Was a reddish/ambery colour with a glassy consistency (actually looked like beer bottle glass - complete with translucency). Was brittle rather than resiny buut got sticky if you held it in your hand. Was way stronger than the dark stuff. Lushy as fuck in fact. Was of Middle Eastern origin apparently. Not sure where exactly. Cost £15/g which seemed a bloody good deal. Was available for only a few glorious weeks but not heard of any since :(

^It's quite sad, I've travelled, lived and worked quite extensively throughout the Middle East but it seems that with the exception of Iran, which I haven't been to, opium seems between rare to non-existant, even in Lebanon, met people doing fuckload of codeine pills(with paracetamol and no CWE) and no opium.

Once there I had some hash that was said to be mixed with opium but it was from this twattish know-it-all American blogger wanna-be adventurer type so I think it was probably just very good hash that was marketed to the dumb foreigner as something more exotic for a higher price tag. I was on a lot of bromazepams I'd bought it Syria at the time and well that hash did feel stony as hell and with no paranoia, but that could have been from the benzos anyway.

Oddly enough, the memory I have is that the glassy stuff was supposedly from Iran. Might just be my wonky memory playing tricks though.

Have also had hash supposedly laced with opium on several occasions. Almost always bollocks but on a couple of occasions I'm pretty sure it was legit. Definitely had the distinctive opium scent, taste and feel going on anyway. But 99% of the time it was just decent hash being sold at a premium.

Righty. Am gonna go brave the frigid outdoors. Time to go hunt and gather some shopping.

Plastic found on mars wtf!!!

Last week Curiosity was able to use its SAM (Sample Analysis at Mars) device to confirm the discovery. A robotic arm with a complex system of Spectral Analysis devices was able to vaporize and identify gasses from the sample, concluding that it is in fact plastic. How plastic formed or ended up on the Martian surface is quite an exciting mystery that sparks many questions. The type of plastic sampled as we know so far can only be formed using petrochemicals, meaning not only that there could possibly be a source of oil on the Red Planet, but that somehow it got turned into plastic.

lol even as a kid whenever i got told something benign had been laced i would find it fairly ridiculous.. the speckled pills 'containing heroin' and what not. almost as bad as the daily mail dealers who flogged rat poison.. great way to make money, killing off punters

however i do remember diesel soapbar. burnt blue and didnt get you high

folks said it was from being transported in fuel tanks but how true that is ive no idea

Wasn't as nippy as I'd expected out actually. Must just be bloody freezing in me flat 8)

That Martian plastic thing is intriguing, eh? Very odd. Suppose it could have summat to do with earlier landers. Or even debris from Curiosity's landing maybe. L'il placcy balls do sound like stuff melting on entering the atmostphere or summat. But I'd imagine NASA wouldn't have mentioned it unless they thought it was interesting. Wouldn't be surprised at finding oil on Mars (article said the particular type of oil needed to produce that type of plastic only comes from fossilized plankton, algae and the like which doesn't sound that outrageous). How it spontaneously formed plastic would be quite the headscratcher though. Never heard of "natural" plastics on this 'ere planet. How very intriguing.

Projects to start excavating the Martian surface are now on the drawing board for not only NASA but Private Sector Entrepreneurs as well.

Surprise sur-bloody-prise. One whiff of oil and suddenly folks are all keen to go drill it out 8)

lol it's a hoax.

That'll teach me for taking so long to write a reply.

They did find a ton of ice on mercury though.

At the risk of double-whammy hoaxification, that wouldn't be much of a shocker. Ice has been found just about everywhere when it wasn't previously expected. And the dark side of Mercury is possibly even nippier than my flat and I could probably find ice here if I went looking.

Speaking of interesting things involving Mercury - von Neumann Probes, Dyson Speres, Exploratory Engineering & the Fermi Paradox. Fascinating talk about some rather ambitious ideas on how to get from pottering about the solar system to Universal domination in but a few simple(ish) stages. Mercury goes bye-bye quite early on. But in a good cause.

Finding fossil fuels on Mars would be a great thing, it would spur global private-lead research and development efforts to further space exploration, it would be exactly what we need as a specie to drag ourselves out of our near orbit into wider human colonization of space. It would also stop us from digging for oil on earth, outsource the environmental externalities to Mars.
