Hip hop beats haha... Are you gonna rap to them Dan? I can feel an EADD mic faceoff thread happening soon

fl studio use my cuz and sum other I know allso its sweet enough they say. cool with sum soul samples

^:)

Hope the happiness carried over to today nick.

Saw a pretty interesting thing on the news today, where unused commercial buildings in London are being rented out dirt cheap to people (mostly young professionals) in order to prevent squatters moving in. Only downside being the tenants might have to completely move out with as little as two weeks notice. But, one of the guys spoken to was renting in the centre of London for £415/month so it's a definite win.

I just watched one of those 9th Wonder things up there ^

Am I correct in saying that they take a sample from an old soul record and repeat the odd line or word over and over on top of a modern beat? If so, this goes to prove why I really don't understand electronic music. Where's the creativity or the artistry in that?

No offence to the guys on here having a go, I'm just talking about the genre in general.

It's the Emperor's New Beats, you could say. ;)

It could be argued that people doing cover versions lack originality, creativity and artistry too perhaps? I can honestly say I pretty much listen to most genre's (hate that word) of music and I can see beauty, creativity and artistry in some of it it works for me!

I love this explanation...

Ninja Jamm Meets... Congo Natty

That's the thing, I can see artistry in pretty much every other genre (even rap, which I can't stand) and I feel like I'm missing out by not "getting" this electronic stuff. Try as I might, I just don't understand it.

Do you mean you don't understand why people like it or that you want to understand it in order to not miss out? Ahhh we all like what we like my feeling about music is if it moves you in some way then just like it..no need to understand it. :D
When you say electronic music what kinda of thing do you mean? Because 'electronic' is pretty broad term just trying to understand. What are your most loved bands etc ? <3

I tried my hardest, but outside of the context of dark rooms and drug use (and even within that context if I'm honest) I just can't connect with it that well. That's not to say I don't like electronic sounds - I do - but drum loops / programmed rhythms tend to turn me off in a very short space of time, unless I just want to zone out or use music as sonic wallpaper. That's not the way I approach music though.

I do find that a lot of the people who primarily like electronic music of the beats / breaks variety tend to be in the 'sonic wallpaper' school, not that there's anything necessarily wrong with that.

Bad cover versions, perhaps. A decent cover version is something else entirely though. It's a re-interpretation from the ground up and may be a massive departure.

Which is not to say I don't recognise the creativity in judicious sampling, btw, but I can see why a lot of people don't.

Electronic music covers such a wide spectrum..just trying to find out what kinds..gonna sound like a pedantic twit now and not my intention..but a guitar attached to an amp is electric? And I know your not saying that, play me some electronic stuff you hate?

Ahh and don't get me wrong I love a cover if it added something to it, made it unique. These people that just do exact covers or don't do em justice is musical blasphemy. ;)

Yep not disagreeing Sammy I can see creativity in it but I can appreciate why some might not..just yeh know curious was saying he feels like he is missing out by not getting it...but like you say curious you have tried..it aint for you so don't worry about it=D I have tried several times to get Sammy's beloved Swans and as yet I am not feeling or getting it...you can't please all the people all the time. And thank fuck we all like different stuff to be honest..how dull the world would be if we didn't?

You're right, it is a wide spectrum.

I don't hate much stuff at all. I just can't get into it, apart from possibly when I'm fucked. That would probably cover every type of electronic music that isn't industrial / noise / (some) eighties synthpop and of course Italodisco, all of which I can appreciate regardless of context.

Back in the days I went out partying every weekend, I'd end up dancing to the rhythm of HGV engines and so on. You get the picture.

You tried to get into Swans? Are you a masochist or something? 8o ;)

Lol... Watch this sampling and tell me theres no creativity or artistry in this. plus those beats are hardly modern, hip hop has been around for years. and how can electronic music be "summed up in general"

Anyway fuckit, gonna get my guitar out

You see curious I am confused as I know you said you don't like hip hop but you kind see the artistry in it...well hip hop is samples innit Dan..mostly? You know I always say I am not a big fan of hip hop actually turns out I am but only certain kinds!!!

Yeh I had a go on the Swans..why not open to anything..is there like an easing you in gently few tracks??;)

I have a feeling that curious will see that as an example of technical skill rather than creativity or artistry.

Where does one end and the other begin, and do they intersect? I think they can personally, but with today's technology there's far less originality than at perhaps any point in popular music history, which is weird.

If I were on the other side of the fence, I'd point out that Smack My Bitch Up was a virtual remake of Firestarter anyway. Because it was. =D

Most early hip hop was technically pretty astounding though - I salute that, even if I can't get with the end result. People were creating something new out of minimal equipment, which to me is a very punk / folk thing.

Yes, I sound really ignorant now. Thanks for backing me into this corner. ;)

This is what we are getting down to Dan...which electronic music as per generalized Curious aint feeling!

It's not the law Dan...we all jus like what we like..speaking of which you know that really funky older track by that black with the amazing lush voice you played me a few weeks ago who was that again?

My tuther half likes ALL different kinds of music but at heart he is old school metal...which reminds me I have to you youtube 'Clutch' later...??? The deal is he will come with me and deal with Courtney Love gig in return for me ermm going to see clutch...what a shit name for a band?

Technical skill and creativity in my opinion, you can have all the skill in the world but create stuff like that takes a lot of creativity. and dunno about far less oriiginality, depends how hard you look, but its certainly changed everything a lot

inflor, yeah i know its not the law, just saying, and not sure which funky track got quite a few, will have a look. x

i'll check out Clutch
