I've had that a lot over the years too. Although I did used to wear a lot of black and have long dark hair so suppose I do fit the bill on a rather simplistic level. And I like Sisters of Mercy. I like lots of other things too though. And I wouldn't be seen dead in those massive chromed-up boots/shinpad jobbies.

From lurking I've never seen C,Dan behave in an oppressive way to anyone but did call Raas a smackhead or summit the other day..........BUT he was clearly using it specifically to get back at Raas for hypocritically judging his drug usage. It was quite obvious to me that this was not really how he would think of a heroin addict.

That. Although I can see how it could be taken to mean some kinda wider insult, it just isn't in Dan's character to use such terms in a blanket way from what I've seen. Arguments do tend to get heated and personal and I'm sure the best of us have used rather cutting language at times.

I've lived in Australia and I lived in Italy and I can tell you there is only one country that I felt uncomfortable walking down the street hiding hands with a black girl.

Italians it seems just don't get Australian humour. If you are Mediterranean you get called a wog, if you are a Brit you get called a pom and if you are scadanavian you get called sweet heart or darling.

I'll make sure we bury pagey in a shallow grave to he family has a nice funeral.

I know we haven't chatted almost at all on this forum, but what you wrote struck with me as I found myself in your same shoes in August 2012.

Low on chances at home, no job, well in all fairness I quit the one I had to pursue my dream of going to Oz, an idea I had in on the back of my head for several years, bit of cash saved, the hope that the Australian economy would be so dynamic and easy to penetrate as it was made up by the scores of useless plebs that compose the majority of my peers in my country. Your neighbour by the way, we dress better than you, have better fashion designers, make better bread and don' make me start on the wine. You guys do read more though, a fuck load more. I think the last best selling book here, was a collection of christmas jokes by Totti. Meh

To be honest I started the post with the intention of cheering you on but I don't think I can do that. The hostel in St.Kilda where I spent my first week, was packed full of wankers, and I mean proper proper wankers, mostly white as snow kids from the UK, dressed like surfers or skaters, talking about hitting those waves as if they had spent most of formative years in Big Sur rather than in East Sussex.

Most of them were the Idiots in Nathan Barley, their highest aspiration going to do some jobs they would never ever consider doing back home as that's what Polish and Romanians do, what wake up at 5am every morning, live in a fucking caravan like a gippo, miles and miles from anything you could consider a town.

I found a flat within the week, the condo building was ace, on Flinders St right in front of the Acquarium(go visit it if you find your self in Melbourne, best thing about the city). There was a swimming pool and jacuzzi a couple of floors down, only thing my "room" was actually a section of the living room with some shower curtains working as walls. A local stinky bogan lived at the bottom of the living room, also with his privacy guaranteed by more shower curtains

Two Frensh lasses shared the only bedroom.

Let's just say my job search wasn't what I expected, given my outstanding CV, and you got to believe that, I worked in places that extremely prestigious, I expected to land a cushty office job within a week. All I could find were crappy door to door sales job, with only commission pay. CRAP.

The locals were unwelcoming and assholes, only country in the world where I ever experienced racial abuse, got called a wog at least half the time I left the house, got thrown glasses, bottles and ran after by a bunch of big rugby dudes the only thing that saved me was the intervention of a sound strip club bouncer who literally threw me in the club and told the lads to get lost.

The four months I spent there were probably the lowest in my life, spent all my savings, almost didn't earn shit, didn't make one single goddam friend and only got laid once with a nice kiwi girl I met casually while walking around Quuen Victoria Market.

If I were you I'd go back to France as soon as possible. But I don't want to discourage, if your skin is proper white and you don't middle eastern or Indian maybe the locals will be nicer to you and you'll have better opportunities.

If I were to be honest though, fuck Australia, they're not worth you, go to NZ and do some well paid farm jobs, that's what I would have done, become a shepherd for a few months, nice scenery, almost no european wankers and if you're bored you can play act with the wooden stick in your hand(all shepherd get one) and pretend you're in Lord of the Rings.

I'm not sure the humour disguised as racism argument is a good one OTW, though I'm here to defend Oz regardless. I was only there a couple of weeks so maybe my opinion counts for jack shit but they totally turned round my prejudices about them, which had mainly been based on losing to arrogant Aussies in the Ashes for years. While there I encountered nothing but pleasantry and helpfulness. Its one of the few places I've been where they go out of their way to accomodate you and when they say 'have a nice day' it doesn't sound like its come out of a training manual.

I'll admit I'm not black. And I'll add if Spade were here he'd definitely be laying into the racism he saw. I don't doubt it, whites are whites and we like to remind others we're better than them, even if they're white too, but I never saw it.

Racism really is everywhere. Go to many parts of North Wales, and some of the mid and south too, and see what happens if you put on your best English accent. Abersoch was the first time I experienced racism.

So I thought I'd piss them off by taking over their country in later life.

I did start the post saying I wished to cheer up, but then admitted I couldn't do, and the truth just came out.

I'm sure Pagey would love Australia, at least I hope so, those 4 months I spent there I wouldn't wish on anyone let alone a young girl don't even know

OTW, I've seen people in cars in Melbourne CBD slow down, turn the windows down and shout at a family of nice Indian tourists, "go back to your fucking countries you monkeys". I've seen lads walk in the sushi bar I was eating in and start shouting at the guys cooking there in a mock asian language something that said "gook gook gok won gook gook", spit on the floor and then leave.

My boss at the crappy door-to-door sales job after seeing a Rihanna poster turned to me and said, everybody says she's hot, I don't get it she looks like a bloody monkey.

My bogan flatamate seeing me watch the live election results for the presidential elections, comment with, yanks are bloody silly you can't let them negroes into government, one day they'll probably start doing in over here too, he then made a disgusted facial expression.

I could continue but my hands are tired, I have many more anectodes from my four months there, I never said Italian aren't racist, hell I provided the names of two of the most vicious creatures in Europe. All I'm saying, we haven't got shit on the aussies.

I've heard lots of people dish out the racist and aggressive accusations to Aussies before, but as I've never been I can't comment on whether it's truth or not.

The Australian Government's stance and approach to it's own indigenous people tho, has been pretty barbaric, and documented by John Pilger for years and years.

Utopia is one of the most urgent films I have made. That Australian governments believe they can manipulate and discriminate against Aboriginal communities in a manner that has been described in the UN as “permissively racist” is astonishing in the 21century. Also I've lived in the UK so I get that type of humour very well, being punched, thrown beer bottles, beer glasses and ran after by a bunch of thugs, isn't humour, it's racist violence, don't try turn into something it's not. Banter is one thing, racist aggression another.

By the way I'm sure that if you were to see a family of Indians being shouted at aggressively by a bunch of blokes calling them monkeys, making threats and telling them to fuck off back to their own country, you'd probably shrug it off and consider it banter, and you know what mate?
