Gibberings CLV: Empathy is a Two Way Street

I thought smoked bacon was good to eat raw because it was smoked though?

Dunno, depends if it's cold-smoked or hot-smoked, maybe? (I need to know more about bacon, I realise now..)

Ive got some vitamin b tablets with choline (whatever that is) some of them have mold growing on the surface. They are fuckin big pills so im wondering if they'll be allright if i just slice the moldy bits off. I assume they will be. Ive been advised to take loads of extra vitamins for a while.
Er, best not eat mouldy things, eh? (The mould is just the 'fruit', there'll be myceium growing throughout..)

didnt realise that, i allways thought if it looks and smells allright, after the mold has been scraped off thet it'll be ok, admittedly that was only in relation to very early stage mold growth on bread. I think id better throw those bvits away then, dont really want to make myself ill when the whole purpose is to try to feel better.

Oh and cheese too, depending how advanced the mold growth is, some cheeses like stilton are deliberately mouldy or something arent they :?

i just cut off the mouldy bits of cheese and allways been ok. These vitamins smell a bit fishy though, so probably best avoided me thinks.

I dunno, in practice that's often fine and doesn't cause any harm, but technically it's not a great idea. And I have a feeling that moulds growing on tablets are probably a bit more iffy than ones growing on bread.

You keeping up to date with those dishes?

4-FA has arrived. fucking yeeeeeeeeeaah

yeah kitchen is under control. Still got some odds and sods scattered around my bedroom though. I'll get round to them one day, either bin them, clean them, or chuck em in the shed.

Im looking forward to when I'll be able to take stims again in a month or 2 perhaps. I didnt really have a problem with recreatiuonal stims, i found them self limiting, there comes a point where they just dont work if you try taking them day after day, and they really are best just left for occasional use.

Agreed

they seem alright spaced out, but days in a row loses its magic proper quickly

This is true, right?
Just did some research, is as I thought, probably not.. here's some dude's opinion on a cooking forum. Didn't want to scare you though, am sure you'll be fine but wouldn't recommend doing it regularly. ;)

modern bacon that is "smoked" just might ONLY have smoke ADDED as a flavoring and not "be" smoked, OR not smoked for as long a period of time. While adding salt and chemical preservatives will enhance the shelf life it will not inherently kill ALL bacteria (see below for more detail/effects).

One other difference from "modern" and "historical" pork products, including bacon but also extended to other products is the method of the production. Modern pork is typically raised on clean(er) food sources and you don't see "toss the household garbage into the pig pen" or pigs roaming the streets picking up food (at least typically). These "older" feed sources might still exist in some areas, even in modern pork. I point this out because certain parasites can and DO exist in modern pork, but are MUCH reduced compared to prior. That being said, unless you KNOW the source, you cannot be sure, and there still exists that possibility of those parasites which heat will kill. This is one of the reasons why pork is cooked more thoroughly than other meats such as those from cattle, sheep, goats or other grazers which tend to NOT eat those items.

Historically cured meats (bacon, ham etc) also reduced the moisture contents of those meats - thus the smoking process desiccated those parasites, and reduced the bacterial "friendliness" of the product - along with the salt, sugar, smoke which were/are added during processing. Note that smoking in a traditional manner (smokehouse) will also slightly raise the temperature of the product as well for a period of time longer than most cooking, but not as MUCH as cooking - and longer than a process which would simply be used to impart flavor.

One other note - smoking (not adding smoke flavoring, the actual process) will also tend to dry out/seal the outer layer making it less "available" for penetration of contaminants such as bacteria, which along with the increased salt in the outer layers also helps.

If you purchase a product, and it is refrigerated, be prepared to cook it. If it is not refrigerated, it might be "safe" to eat but not as tender as cooked.

Bottom line (for me at least) is I never eat meat raw unless I personally prepared it including actually raising the animal MYSELF and processing it.

This is true, right?

yeah smoking foods preserve them, and presumably prevent bacterial bulid up. Innuit populations do this IIRC, Ray Mears told me. They are almost certainly safer to eat raw than non smoked bacon, i dont think id eat either raw though if i had a choice. I can imagine being very ill for days, but ofcourse if i was starving and had no cooker id eat it raw if i had to.

EDIT: Just seen Swampy's post. Im thinking about proper traditional smoking as a preseverative, not this 'modern smoking' as mentioned above.

Yeah, the issue isn't with smoked foods or bacteria, it's with raw pork products and their worms.

Cheers for that swampy.

I shan't do it again :o

is it freezing up, or sounding garbled or something ? I sometimes have the garbled sound problem, its really annoying, im not sure if its cos my pc is doing some processes or other that fuck up the sound, i think that is the problem, all these fuckin java updates and all that crap that keeps popping up is a right pain in the arse, i dont want to fucking update it but it keeps on popping up.

the flash on youtube always breaks for me after a few hours and I have to restart the computer. Probably more a problem with the computer than me though.

Google+ on youtube pisses me off

yeah i hated the way those things merged and forced you to merge email and youtube accounts. I cant post anything on youtube now without giving away my real name. Unless i set up another account all over again, i did have a 2nd and 3rd account, bit its locked me out of both of them, cannot remember the pswds, cannot find a way to reset those accounts either:X
