I wish i had thought of this point earlier as i think it would have made my argument a bit better, IMO these 'petty criminals' completely lack empathy for their victims, so somehow they need to be taught how it feels to be a victim of their actions. Maybe this would stop them repeating these nasty crimes.

You may have to run that by me again. MDB. How does what you've quoted make your argument better? I'm saying the opposite of your argument

well it shows the things are survivors, obviously it's a different environment being indoors in a pot where their root system cannot grow and it will probably die of lack of nutrients, or being in an unnatural and unsuitable indoors environment. Why dont you plant it in your garden SD, that way you can use it next year aswell, providing it doesnt grow too big :D

Plants and trees can be incredibly resilient and adaptable, ive got one australian bottle brush plant growing outdoors that somehow survived the brutal winter a couple of years ago, according to all info it shouldnt have survived those low temps, i planted several of them, 1 has survived.

Like where victims of crime meet with criminal and explain to them exactly how it feels? It's not a widely-used policy but (afaik - don't have stats to hand) it is pretty effective at getting people to really consider the aftermath of their actions. I'm sure there would be many ways that similar goals could be achieved if society took the time to really think about it. Simply locking people up then letting them out with little or nothing in between does nothing to help and almost certainly makes things worse, I suspect. Whilst people are in prison they are a captive audience (literally) and surely that time could be put to good use. Rehabilitation seems to be a dirty word these days - it's all about punishment, punishment, punishment. Which we all know is really not especially punishing (and if it was we'd just end up like the US anyway). Treat people like animals and you get animals.

I know it hurts to be the victim of crime. I know how frustrating it is. I know how frightening it is and how badly it can affect a person. I've been the victim of quite a number of crimes ranging from burglary to mugging to assault to serious assault to what they call 'home invasion' to within an inch of kidnap, torture and murder. But revenge is never the answer. There has to be a better way and further brutality is certainly not it.

Alas, it's a bit too old/big a tree to re-root if I plonked it in the garden. Might possibly work if it were a little'un though. Will see how long he lasts anyway, makes the house a bit cosier. Plus the more fairy lights, the better.

Was reading some random (probably PooToob comment) debate about approaches to criminal justice recently which kinda tickled me (albeit in a rather depressing way). Some fella from Saudi arguing that rape is almost non-existent in countries that have Sharia Law (or some approximation of it). Technically I suppose he was right. At least in terms of numbers of people convicted

There are quite a few cases where foreign women who worked in the middle east would get raped, but then imprisoned themselves for being drunk and for having premarital sex. Will link tomorrow but in bed and off to sleep now, early start as well

Is it not the case that a woman needs several male witnesses to be "allowed" to report rapes and not be charged with adultery or premarital sex? Or is that a bit of tabloid exaggeration? Or perhaps a bit of both? I'm sure I've seen it discussed on "serious" TV shows and stuff but am aware we often get a very distorted view of such things over here unless we really research them properly

That's what I had heard as well. Looked it up and this is what I found (it's from islamhelpline.net). Sums the shitty situation up well..

If a woman claims that she has been raped, she does not have to bring any witnesses to prove her claim; her word will be taken as truth without the need of any witnesses whatsoever. And because she claimed she was raped, she will be treated honorably and free of any wrong doing whatsoever. There is absolutely no question of any punishment for her, because she was the innocent party and a victim of the heinous crime committed against her.

But if the woman who is raped accuses that so and so specific person or people raped her, then there are only two ways an Islamic Court can convict the accused rapist/s: The accused rapist confesses to his heinous crime; or she produces four witnesses to justify her claim that so and so person raped her. If the accused rapist does not confess, and the woman is unable to produce the four witnesses; then the Court can levy upon her the case of ‘kazaf’ or falsely accusing somebody.
