I haven't been there much for the last 15 years or so, but in the 90's (I know, yawwwwwn

) i was in my 20's and Birmingham really was bostin back hthen..the Que Club, Wobble, Subway City, Moseley Dance Centre, Custard Factory had just opened... and an amazing free party scene back then, acid house/techno, in factories, warehouses.
Great live music scene then too....
Places change though.....but it was good for music, nightlife back then.
The markets are great.
The food was never up to much, apart from Mr Egg, which sadly has finally closed I hear
