Gibberings CCXIV -- it's been 2017 for over a week now and nobody has noticed .....

I read that about the local spirits and can remember when there were a load of deaths from one batch of Arak - it's their 'moonshine' and unregulated so ends up contaminated and kills people.

Consumer sorry I must have missed it but what have you done to your knee?
 
Torn my meniscus in my knee. Hopping around on crutches while doped up on painkillers atm. Looks like it might not need an operation. Keeping my fingers crossed as a week ago i was sure that it would. Shit happens. Its more annoying than anything and it was shit timing.

Lots of people used to say to me when i lived in Byron Bay " your so lucky to live here" and i would always go its not luck. I made a decision to move here, made a go of it and twenty years later i was still there. Glad i left though. Place has changed.

Nasty - I wish you a speedy recovery though mate. I had spotted a few of your posts mentioning pain meds and I know that your not normally into them so was wondering what was up.

Definitely not my poison of choice but atm much needed. I took enough to get buzzed the other night and tbh i didn't enjoy it that much. Made me bloody itchy more than anything so just sticking to prescribed amounts now.
 
Fuck it :! I was just about to start my weekend and remembered that I promised to go shopping tonight (to the Mall of all places).

Fuck i used to hate going shopping with my ex wife. The only shopping i like is vinyl record shopping pretty much. Spending 5 hours looking at clothes answering " Do i look fat in this" was my idea of hell. No more of that but i really need to actually go and buy some new clothes. I tend to wear things till they fall to bits.
 
Same here I hate clothes shopping. The thing is I've lost quite a bit of weight the last few months so really need some clothes that fit me (humblebrag). I can pull up photos years apart and I have the same shirt on :D. I've just called him and tried the 'what do you fancy for dinner tonight as I fancy cooking' he's learnt over the years what that means though as he simply said 'no, were going to the Mall' :!
 
Lol!!

I do need to go buy some clothes too. I am the same..i wear the same things for years. I have a 25 year old pair of Doc Martens still going strong. But the t shirt and shirt collection needs an update badly. Might just buy em online lol. Thats how much i hate shopping.

I call bullshit on that statement unless you mean being born in a decent country without any major disabilities or health issues is the luck you are talking about. People CHOOSE to lead the lives they lead by making DECISIONS that alter the paths of their lives.

Envious of someone living in some paradise somewhere? Then fucking go there. Of course DECISIONS already made might prevent that DECISION from being made, kids, jobs etc.

My friend who lives on the Gili Islands went there, made a DECISION to move there and did it. Simple. She made her own luck through her actions.

People who say they dont make their own luck are usually people who have made numerous poor choices along their lifes path.

I don't know if you've read Mr Smiley -- my last pill and testament; but if the story is to be believed (and the second fantastical premise makes the first, "pirates / buried treasure" fantastical premise look totes legit and plausible) then there's a potential explanation in there. Can't say much more without spoilers .....
 
Today I started an online business.

Got targeted FB adverts in ten English speaking countries, offering a service very specific to my part of the world, two new domain names regged, and just need to get to the bank tomorrow to deposit $$ to pay for hosting etc

Best of all;the guy doing this before has left, and his old business FB page hasn't been marked closed and points directly to one of the domains I purchased today, and that's the NO1 on FB and top 5 on google. Score for $8!

I am not envious. I'm doing my own dream job. But I'm not so arrogant as to think it was due to anything else besides one well-timed e-mail. Without which, I'd almost certainly have ended up homeless, addicted to heroin and on the game.

Sure, make enough bad decisions and you probably will get nowhere. But hard work and good decisions are not enough by themselves; you need a bit of random chance in the mix as well. Your friend may well have made plenty of good decisions, but there probably was still something out of her hands that had to happen for her to be able to follow her dream.

Some people think this is God smiling on them. I say it's just their turn to be the pigeon and not the statue that day .....

Sometimes the best and brightest get mired in and tarnished by the mud of life, sometimes not.

Sometimes the vacuous and privileged get handmaid-ed to the top, sometimes not.

Life can, and does, turn on a dime.

None of which means we can't plan ahead.

But adapt your plans as you go or die.

Man is condemned to be free - Sartre

This statement has all sorts of connotations. Among them is we have free will. Not among them is any denial that a silver spoon in the mouth can help.

We make decisions whether we recognize them and take responsibility for them or not. It does not mean anyone can become anything. But it does mean that your choices make you responsible for what you are. Sartre was a Marxist. He was well aware of the consequences of the capitalist economic system. But he said there was always a choice (with the possible exception of slavery). Money doesn't equate to happiness because we are all fallible (I think the Beatles sang something not unrelated). Ultimately you are the sum of your choices, not some abstract notion of 'luck'. Whether you (one) wish to acknowledge that or not.
