i'm honestly too angry to think rationally, as i always am when rape, especially gang rape, comes up... i deleted my last post...
i think some way to inform every single person that the rapist meets in their life of exactly what they did would be a nice one. some magical way to immeditatelly inform every new person they meet of their crime.
failing that... long gaol terms - twenty years with no sun light, plain food, no human contact sounds like enough.
leave them alone with me, tied to chairs and i guarantee when i leave they'll be pleading to be killed... if they can talk.

i haven't been following the news lately..
but anyway..
regarding punishment, i agree with Psychokitten. they should publicise the pictures of rapists in newspapers and magazines and/or mark rapists' face or body with a certain sign (like tattoo or something) so when they get out of jail they can't lead a normal life because people will recognise them as rapists. see if they can get a job, or even just walk to the shop to buy some milk without being pelted with pebbles, spat at or refused service. and the bastards will also have to live to see their families living with the impact of their action (not fair for their family, but that should be a warning for other up-and-coming shitheads).
even if they regret their crimes.
they should have known better.
with crime, there is no such thing as an accident.
what is also important is to make them sit in a room with their victims and the angry families and see the destruction and anguish they've caused, and let them see into themselves and how they'd feel if their mother, sister or daughter was the victim. repeat until offenders get nervous breakdown and hopefully they'll decide to kill themselves. after trying to live with enormous guilt and lack of empathy, of course.
a while ago i watched a doco on abc abt a couple of guys who raped and murdered a girl, and they had to confront the girl's parents. there were several meeting sessions, and although at first they were unrepentant, they finally saw all the pain and anguish experienced by the parents and the dead girl.
i can't remember what happened in the end, maybe they went to jail, maybe they received a death sentence. but what's important is that they acknowledge their wrongdoing and realise they'll be burdened with their sin forever.
sorry if i sound so cold and heartless (and maybe unwise too), but i'm just furious when it comes to crimes like these.
if i want to open another can of worms, i can also say that we all should have a right to _defend_ ourselves (*wink wink*) and a right to commit revenge. eye for an eye, forget about the system, let the victims decide.

Look, apologies Stylin. It seems we have both each misconstrued what the other is saying. It was not a personal attack.

What I was trying to get at was you seem to be making alot of assumptions based upon what looks to be a single case of gang rape in this instance:

Now correct me if I am wrong, but we are dealing with one case that may or may not be primarily racially motivated. The way in which your post was constructed seemed to convey the idea that race-related rapes were happening with some frequency, due to a trend of inter-racial tension within the community. You seem to raise the example of the Black Panthers with respect to this. However, I fail to see how this premise can be arrived at just by examinig what appears to be a single case. Lets not get carried away... A single low and rotten act does not implicate all members of that minority as 'rapists.'

Rape whether it be date rate , a husband raping his wife, or an attack on a random somebody is wrong and really sick.
You seriously have to question the motives of these guys.
and the scary thing is that these guys will be out in 3-4 yrs.........
I dont understand the legal system which gives 5-6 years to rapists and 10yrs minimum if you forge bank notes - go figure........

i totally agree that these people that feel the urge to go around raping others are fucken sick and yes they do deserve years and years in jail. In fact, i think that many crimes have a gross inconsistency between the serverity of crime and punishment... but on a simply logistics scale, we cannot afford or accommodate a larger prison population. I remember a few years ago having to study the state's prison system and was shocked by the statistics. They're full. By increasing sentences, more prisoners would have to be facilitated for. I think this is one of the reasons why the justice system hands down lighter sentences and includes rehab during the term, hoping that will patch up a lighter sentence.
What really shits me though, is that Bob Carr stated to the media that he was going to be meeting with the justice systems big cheeses to try and push for stronger sentencing for these crimes. Basically, he has distanced himself from these sentences and given himself a bit of political quedos. However, the justice system has little choice to increase sentences when there is a lack of prison cells, which actually is the government's responsibility to provide and well know to dickhead Bob.
Sorry for the rant, but political tackiness gets up my goat. Politics is a fucken greasy, slimy field!
