The race of the author is or course relevant. But it's much simpler than that. Within a GOT-level technological civilization transportation options are limited. People raised families where they were born and that's just how geographic regions were populated and "races" were formed. As is the case in a medieval fantasy world, if a red-haired aboriginal girl ever existed in medieval Europe she'd have quite a bit of attention paid to her "continuity."

I wonder if in 4 they show stark mom come back from the dead?

NSFW:
I gotta doubt it. I read a couple interviews where Michelle Fairly clearly stated that her GOT contract was fufilled.
I suppose they could do a guest spot, or CGI or something. Feels more like a character that can be cut.

I liked the last episode overall and thought they did well setting up some of the huge stuff to come.
I'd have to say that for as spectacular a job as they've done with most the story lines, they butchered Jon and Ygritte's.
A big part of the problem, for me, is the actors. Watching that scene where Jon and her are saying goodbyes, it felt pretty clear that I was watching two actors attempt to look anguished. There's not many scenes I can recall in the series where I was acutely aware that the actors were straining with what they were tasked with. IDK.
I also agree that The Khaleesi's story feels really disjointed and out of place. That last scene was PAINFUL. Cheeseball.
Show watchers are still fucking PISSED, for the most part. The Lannister's are all reasonably well, etc, etc... Trying to give the audience a uplifting scene like that to cap things off felt very forced.

I actually don't mind having the stories so disjointed. In my opinion it will only be that much better when the two eventually collide with each other. Actually if you think about it, everything in this show has been disjointed, and every amazingly climatic moment has resulted from the final intersection of separately developed complex storylines.

(I can't speak to if the books are written that way, but in the television series I find that it works incredibly well)

As toward the allegations of racism, Daenerys lives in a world of "brown people". They are her friends, her lovers, her enemies, her advisors, her most trusted and her most feared. I agree with the person that likened it to a Mediterranean culture. This is the world that she has walked within since the beginning of the series. Why would she suddenly be surrounded by "white people"? That last scene was definitely worthy of a cringe or two, yet for sloppy and poorly executed sentimentality rather than any other reason.

Jumping around from plot to plot is fine. It's excellent actually. It is a hallmark of the books and the show does a great job emulating for the most part.
I just feel like with her plot in particular, it's so separated from the rest of the story. It's too separated, in my opinion.
I would say more, but to hash it out would delve into coming events.

Yeah, I'm afraid of reading this thread because I fear that some tool shed will blurt out that Tyrion has Podrick crash a couple dragons into Casterly Rock. So far I've remained unspoiled.

I think you can safely read through, BPB. People have done a good job of sticking spoilers within tags.

Podrick does play a further role. But the Pod as a sexual dynamo thing is just some TV oddness.

I noticed that too that the last couple of episodes Daenerys' storyline was cut short.
NSFW:
Yunkai was really quick. It was basically they have a scrap in a yard and then cut to Jorah saying they have the city. WTF

In the books (as I remember it):

NSFW:
Yunkai basically surrenders as soon as Dany picks up the Sellsword companies. Not a lot of time was devoted to Yunkai initially.

NSFW:
It was a bit more drawn out. Jorah and Arstan were outed and they along with some Unsullied traveled through the sewers and into the city. Didn't they destroy their ships and build siege weapons, too?
Not that any of that would have added too much to the show for the sake of clarity.

I do wonder what they're gonna do with Jorah Mormont. If they're gonna skip the whole betrayal thing and instead keep him around Dany.
I think it would be better that way. Where his story goes in DWD's is kind of mediocre. In my opinion.

^Holy crap. I haven't seen you post in a while, marissaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

I watched the first two episodes of Game of Thrones, but it just didn't really suck me in. Maybe I gave up on it too quickly? Then again, I've never been a fan of this particular genre of long ago, kings and queens, men with swords riding horseback, etc. Maybe I'll give it another shot, though. I could at least watch the first season.

Keep at it, man. The fantasy element is only the flavour. There's so much more to this show.

also on the topic of race in fiction. people write what they know. look inside every white person's head and their images of average people and whatnot are going to be white. look into any other race's head, i'm sure that the images of people will be moreso their own race.

look at the writers of these fantasies that are accused of white-washing. they're all white. a fantasy with all black characters is going to happen when it's written by a black writer IMO. and from what i've seen in modern fantasy/fiction, there's been quite a lot of racial mixing in the series. but then when a POC shows up in a white person's fiction, you all complain their a tolken character or whatever. but if they're absent then it's racist too. pick one.

you write the next fantasy series kenick and fill it with all the colors you want like a bag of skittles.

a white dude isn't going to write a book about all black people. people's brains just aren't programmed like that. even if you look at babies, before people can TALK there's been studies shown that babies respond more to people of their own race. it's not a racist thing, it's a biological thing. evolutionairy psychology is real folks as much as we like to pretend it's not.

open up kenickie's head i'm sure it's filled with black people just like if you open mine it's full of white people and that's not racist that's just the fact that we are of different ethnicities. i'm sure we can both write stuff that includes people of other races than our own, but a majority of our characters would be our own, because fiction reflects the mind of the writer and the mind of the writer is going to be programmed to imagine more things regarding their own race.

i'm tired, so i'm not sourcing anything and i'm probably not typing this out in the most grammatically correct way, but this whole debate annoys me to no end. if i read a great fiction that had a majority of people from another race i wouldn't get mad, because chances are the author is of that race that IS the majority and i would understand that their mind works in that way to create stories that focus on people of their own race since that is what they are and most likely their family and community. (which guess what we all do because i don't see any fucking sandy dornishmen in this thread) and (HELLO SEE HARRY POTTER I DIDN'T SEE ANY AMERICANS IN THAT AND I WASN'T FUCKING COMPLAINING. AND THE ONLY IRISH DUDE WAS SEAMUS FUCKING FINNIGAN THAT CLOWN AND ALL THE DRUNKEN RETARDS AT THE WORLD QUIDDITCH CUP. AND HOW RACIST THAT THEIR MASCOT WAS LEPRECHAUNS THAT GIVE YOU FAKE GOLD. O YEA WE'RE ALL DRUNK AND CHEAP AND SCHEMEY HUH?)
see. see how stupid it looks when i complain there weren't any americans in harry potter and that irish people were stereotyped and brit-washed or whatever the fucking term is? just because my skin is white and there's is doesn't mean that it represents ME. and that's what POC don't get. they think all us white people are sitting here in whiteness all like O YEA I'M SO REPRESNTED without looking into all the different cultures and races within "white". i don't identify with some brunette frenchie any more than i identify with a black girl. but i find something to identify with in characters because that's what you do, you don't complain that they don't look like you.

/endrant.

what?

what?

...my head is filled with people like barack obama because i have one black parent and one white parent? i don't know if you know that. i'm hoping you don't because otherwise you're trivializing a whole different race than the one you think you are. i'm praying you don't. although i know we've had this conversation before so perhaps you're choosing to just ignore it and the complications that creates for your argument against me. and ignoring just everything else you know to be true. A quarter of american school children are latino. 50% of children under 5 are non white. less than 3% of children's books have latino characters in them. i don't know how that's not seen as a problem? for everyone? because that keeps POC as "others" and that's how people justify genocide. and horseshit. white people can write POC and vice versa it's that they choose not to. have you ever seen the wire? David Simon is one white white dude. have you read any neil gaiman? the lead in American Gods is a MR(of the BO type) guy named Shadow (so far the only one i've ever read/seen besides Katniss Everdeen ;)).

being upset that there aren't any Americans in harry potter is fucking stupid marissa, and you know it, and that's not what this is about at all so stop it. stop being a child and think about this seriously or stop talking. aren't you always telling me you're not white and you're a POC italian and italians are always stereotyped ala New Jersey Sopranos Jersey Shore? pick one.

as i said, i don't consume media that doesn't have POC of colour that aren't fridged or stereotypes except for this fucking show. this is the only show i watch that does not have POC as a lead, actually. and i'll keep complaining that scenes like that are problematic, thanks. go read some octavia butler, check your privilege and have a discussion with me when you can tell the difference between nationality and race. i don't know why i ever took you off ignore but i realize that was a mistake.
