Yeah, i've had to surrender and start the books aswell now. just started the 3rd one. Already amazed at how much more detailed it was! But yeah I cannot wait until March, its too long! Only 400 more pages to go till I start the next one :p

So there's the Lands of Ice and Fire that's coming out (companion book to the series) and some map snippets have been leaking out (including an entire one of Essos, it seems - but taken from a picture, so details aren't good).

Also details are leaking out from the World of Ice and Fire companion book, such as details on Aegon's conquest (Aegon I, not the Aegon found in the current series).

the plot and characters are quite complex so it's easy to miss - or misunderstand - something and end up off track.

i get the sarcasm. pardon me for trying to help you out...

:\

enjoy the show.

Sarcasm to cover up for my lack of knowledge. I now understand why the book fans take the details, minor and major, so seriously. I'm through AFFC's, and realize why the books engender such loyalty and appreciation. It's no longer just a HBO show for me. So, my apologies for the snark.

Bran I, ACOK: They didn't have to tell the truth, but the oaths were binding unless they said "Mayhaps," so the trick was to say "Mayhaps" so the lord of the crossing didn't notice. Then you could try and knock the lord into the water and you got to be lord of the crossing, but only if you'd said "Mayhaps." Otherwise you were out of the game.

Cat VI, ASOS: "My lord!" Catelyn had almost forgotten. "Some food would be most welcome. We have ridden many leagues in the rain." Walder Frey's mouth moved in and out. "Food, heh. A loaf of bread, a bite of cheese, mayhaps a sausage."

Also, to echo others..... This is a nice catch. Very interested to see how the show handles

"The Red Wedding."
They've got to stick to the way it plays out in the book, don't they? If so, can't wait to see people's reactions.

I've said it before: I think a lot of people are going to bail after that, though they'll miss the best part of the whole series, which I'm guessing will be at the end of season four.

Agreed. People do lose their shit over major characters dying. I was furious when James Darmody got knocked off Boardwalk Empire. Looking back, you could definitely see that coming.
With The Red Wedding, you could/can, read the tea leaves to a degree, but I don't think anyone will expect it to turn out like THAT.
Robb has been made more of a major character in the show, IMO, than he was in the books. I base that mostly on the fact that in the books his story was told mostly through Catelyn's eyes and he didn't have his "own" chapters.
Lady Catelyn has obviously been a main character in the show as well. For them to die in the manner that they die, I can't imagine the shows casual fans tolerating it.
It was horrific to read and stuck with me throughout the books. I can't really imagine it being played out on screen, along with all the other pandemonium that took place.
With all that said, it really can't be changed, and I would be disgusted even if they soften the blow.
It worries me slightly that they changed Jeyne's character, but ultimately that change seems mostly immaterial.

[spoil]ned stark's fate taught me not to get too attached to any of the characters in the book. i respect it when an author isn't afraid to kill off a major character. or two.[/spoil] :)

Before we start dissing the TV viewers, we should look at some of the book readers.

[SPOIL]GRRM has shown that he's leaning heavy on the medieval realism when it comes to fatality rates of a civil war. He can and will take it up to 11.

Now look at the opposite poles of those who play the game in the book - Stannis, Cersei, Dany, Aegon and the various Greyjoys all are vying to rule part (or the whole) of Westeros. Any solution to the that conflict is going to require removal of some of the major players. It's not (for example) like Stannis and Dany will sit down as co-regents at the end of book 7. Judging by GRRM's work, "removal" will probably mean death.

That's just those who want to be king. There's the want-to-be-kingmakers (Dorne, Varys, Littlefinger, the Reach etc). They will ally themselves with someone, or put their own contender forward. If they become too heavily involved, they will not be able to extract themselves cleanly.

To make it worse is those who do not wish to be king at all, but have their own goals. Braavos and the Iron Bank. Jon (assuming he gets better). The Children of the Forest. Bloodraven/Bran. The Others. The Faith.

Yet some of the fans seem to be thinking the series is going to end just fine for the characters they care about. Even if those characters are on opposite sides of a conflict.[/SPOIL]
