I randomly stumbled across this show and fell in love with it lol... Watch all ten then got the first two books.

Cant wait for next season. :)

I think the spoiler chapters are too spoily, to be honest.

I'm enjoying the 5th book. Oh my, oh my. 400 pages in.

(Fifth book)

NSFW:
I wouldn't have picked up who the three eyed crow was except I browsed around on the ASoI&F wiki awhile back. There seems to be a reference in AFFC, but I don't remember it. Wasn't really expecting the identity.

So I finished the fifth book

NSFW:
fine. the prince who was promised is jon snow. did ramsay really kill Stannis Baratheon? lame. I kind of liked Stannis. I have problems believing anyone is really dead anymore, with the reemergence of Brienne of Tarth, and Asha Greyjoy, i totally thought she was dead, getting hit in the head with an axe usually kills even those strongest among us, i would think. i didn't like Daenerys story arc, nor basically anyone elses. I was so eagerly awaiting this book and was totally let down. My favourite characters didn't have good arcs, and then ones i didn't really like but totally admired (Cersei Lannister) didn't have good ones either.

I challenge anyone to stay awake while reading Book 4, whether it's an e-book or a hard copy. I will pay $100 if you can do it.

I read the first 3 books in like 2 or 3 days a piece.. can't even read book 4 for the life of me..

i want to revise what i said about the fifth book, kind of

NSFW:

I don't like the idea of Cersei Lannister dying like Catelyn Stark. I hate to see her like that. Cersei's chapters were hard for me to read. I don't know if anyone else felt this way, but I totally felt sick to my stomach the entire time I was reading her chapters. Daenerys bored me. :( I did not like the people around with her in Mereen, minus Barristan Selmy:

I also grew to love the She Bear & Asha Greyjoy together. From all the ladies in that book, I think I relate to Asha Greyjoy the most. I'm not truly outrageous enough, Batman-y enough to really get down with Daenerys, but Asha Greyjoy is the jam. In the same way, so is Arya Stark.

Jon Snow's chapters were fucking intense. Hot damn it feels good to be a gangster. He doesn't feel any deep sense of relief after killing a man who was there in his father's execution, Janus Slynt(?). Melisandre is also a fun one, I really liked the few chapters she got.

I also don't want Brienne & Jamie to end badly. Jamie is seriously one of the best best best best of the series and I don't think he gets enough due since his sister is such a cunning bitch. Jamie & Brienne's adventures were fun. I hope Brienne has some sort of plan, she can't let Jamie be killed by some fucking zombie.

Tyrion & Other Targaryen I don't care to know on their way to Meereen and Jorah Mormont and slavery and all that shit. Tyrion, cunning as ever, I hope he gets to Barristan Selmy/Daenerys before anyone else. I don't give two shits about Dorne and Oberon's Sand Snakes, although I enjoy them. I have no doubt that they will stir up something fun, later, like 6 years from now at this rate. :|

kind of long but i don't care.

book 5 arrived the other day.. still midway into book 4.. just unbearable.. tempted to just read a synopsis and move on. is book 5 better?? (and wtf how come I don't remember reading this thing at all)

i don't know. i think you should finish book four, since the first half of book five is happening at the same time as events in book four.

i've not read anything in this thread so as to avoid any spoilers. seen only 5 episodes so far and have loved every single one immensely so far. great show.

Finally made it through book 4.. it got a little better towards the end. Starting book 5 now.

Finished 4 - it ended a lot better than it started and now working on 5. Will read through the spoilers when I'm finished and let you know what I think about 5.

As for 4...
Think the trouble I was having is that the main plot line of the series is shifting from Stark-Lannister conflict to Dorne-Lannister and a lot of the main characters we had so much invested in were killed off. It's probably one of the only books/series I've come across where you're having to rebuild relationships with characters in the middle of the story and it rubbed me the wrong way at first. I love his character development though - much more involved than any other book I've come across. Usually in books characters go through very little change and instead represent stereotypical archetypes. This is far far different. Cersei for example has become so similar to Robert, Jaime is becoming his own man, Tyrion is his father in so many ways, Littlefinger has risen so deftly, and Sansa.. I feel that she's been able to grow the most of all in a twisted way (becoming a new person).. why the hell can't we know what happened to Arya though!?

wtf how do you do NSFW now.. can't find it.. Highlight the white text to read it.

The show was just fantastic - I can't wait for the next season! In the meantime, I'm trying to work my way through the books....still halfway through book one, but it's quick reading. I'm hoping to see if I can chug through the series before the end of my summer. By skimming the above posts, I guess not all of them read as quick as the first few, but here's to hoping I can get 'em done X)

Cersei Lannister is nothing like Robert, except in that now, she drinks too much. She's cunning and devious and power hungry, Robert just wanted a girl who was taken (even that is debatable) from him. Cersei Lannister is one of my favourite characters. Jamie is nothing like what he was before, and that makes him such a great character. He's trying to do what he imagines is the right thing. Tyrion is probably the truest Lannister in the series, if you think that Tywin is the Lannister archtype. Tyrion will write the legacy, while Jamie and Cersei burn. Tywin was right. Either the family lasts for a thousand years, or it ends now. I'm still not okay with the Sansa/Littlefinger thing, I'm uncomfortable with Petyr Baelish's overtures to her. His plan for her is fan-fucking-tastic, and he is doing so much for her right now. He is keeping her alive, and safe, and possibly giving her a future and restoring her to her home. She might have the happiest Stark ending, if you can imagine the Starks having any positive endings at all. I like Oberon's bastard girls in Dorne, the Sand Snakes. I think they will destroy the Lannister rule in King's Landing, like something rotting from the inside out.

Still don't see NSFW anywhere.. but again it's in white text (could soembody explain to a noob how to NSFW on this new fangled forum? :P)
NSFW:
For Cersei: I think she's a lot like Robert now. Granted their motives were different like you said but she's drinking a lot, gaining weight, sleeping with a lot of different people, and making terrible terrible decisions when it comes to running the realm. That's a LOT of similarities. Further, her ambition is completely self serving and if Robert was anything it was that. So I'm really seeing her character gain more and more of her once greatest hate's attributes. And I find that to be completely awesome.
Tyrion, Jaime, and Tywin: 100% agreed.
Sansa: I think we've only seen part of Littlefinger's plan. Ultimately I think he intends to put Sansa on the throne but himself beside her. He's been after Cat Jr. ever since he laid eyes on her.
Dorne: The Sand Snakes almost jacked up the biggest plot of all. Doran has clearly been plotting, possibly somehow connected to Varys, to bring down the Lannisters and help the Targaryans back to power. The end of book 4 pretty much confirms this 100%.

AFFC spoilers.

NSFW:
I don't think you can call Cersei 'cunning and devious.' She 'thinks' she's cunning and devious, likes to pretend that she's her father in female form, but the reality is that she's been a colossal fuckup from the moment Robert died. I mean Tywin specifically send Tyrion down to kings landing to reign her in after she was stupid enough to let Joffrey kill Ned, and if you look at the events over the course of ASOS/AFFC you can see how her current situation is a direct result of the mistakes she's made as regent, the largest that comes to mind being allowing the church to arm itself again. She was so proud over what a smart move that was, and it directly lead to her downfall. Likewise with pouring gold into building a new fleet, only to have it hijacked by the man she appointed to command it. Not to mention all sorts of shit that went on in her dealings with the Tyrells.
