There is a movie coming out this weekend that you absolutely MUST, must see. It's important that you see it THIS weekend, Friday 09/30 or Saturday 10/01. It's important that you go see it in THEATRES, not download it. Why is it so important that you see this movie opening weekend, and pay to see it? Because it's not a big budget movie, relatively speaking, and it needs your support. It is, based on worthy opinions, the best movie of the year. If we want a sequel, if we want to support excellent original films, we have to go out and make this movie #1 in the box office this weekend!

The movie?

Serenity

Please, GO SEE THIS MOVIE! See it with at least one other person -- the more the merrier. And SPREAD THE WORD, tell your friends, family, coworkers, etc. This is the type of movie that people of all ages and backgrounds will enjoy.

Premise: Captain Malcolm Reynolds, a hardened veteran on the losing side of a galactic civil war, now ekes out a living pulling off small crimes and transport-for-hire aboard his ship, Serenity. He leads a small, eclectic crew who are the closest thing he has left to family - squabbling, insubordinate and undyingly loyal. When Mal takes on two new passengers - a young doctor and his unstable, telepathic sister - he gets much more than he bargained for. The pair are fugitives from the coalition dominating the universe, who will stop at nothing to reclaim the girl. The crew that was once used to skimming the outskirts of the galaxy unnoticed find themselves caught between the unstoppable military force of the Universal Alliance and the horrific, cannibalistic fury of the Reavers, savages who roam the very edge of space. Hunted by vastly different enemies, they begin to discover that the greatest danger to them may be on board Serenity herself. (from Yahoo! Movies)

I expect to hear raving about this film from you all come this weekend/Monday.

What does the creator/writer/director's personal wealth have to do with this?

Serenity is a $40 million film, which is well below the average production cost for a wide distribution (non-indie) film. The average film for wide distribution spends over $34 million on prints and advertising alone!

Is this movie from that series firefly on sci-fi? The man kind of looks the same and i thought they called their ship serenity. If it is, it's pretty odd that they made a movie from a series that isn't to popular.

After the series got cancelled it developed a kind of cult following, thus creating a fanboy demand for a movie to tie up the loose ends.

I'll probably go see it. The effects look pretty good in the previews.

If I see this movie without having watched any of the series of will I a) ruin the series for myself and b) be able to have a grasp of what is happening (ie does the movie pick up after the series left off).

Do you have any financial stake in this film?

a) You will be spoiled for some minor points of the series, but I definitely wouldn't say it would ruin the series for you.

b) It is a standalone movie; having seen the series is NOT necessary. I personally know several people who have seen the film, not having seen any episodes of firefly, and they all loved the movie.

Edited: Personal attack

I'm not a Joss Whedon whore; I didn't like Rosanne, I tried to get into Buffy but thought it sucked, etc. The Wonderwoman idea sounds lame, too.

HOWEVER, it's a little, just a little, shortsighted to completely attack and reject a movie because you don't like the creator. I can understand being hesitant and reluctant, but your attitude is narrow minded and simply uncalled for. Not all artists start out brilliant; some take time to hone and perfect their talents. Good artists can produce crappy works, and 'bad' artists can surprise with works of brilliant genius.

It would be a bit more intelligent of you to actually examine THE FILM as opposed to simply bashing Joss and his previous endeavours (btw, I noticed you failed to include the brilliant and wonderful firefly series in your bashing, because that would of course ruin your theory that all things Joss are evil!).

Joss Whedon is NOT the producer of this movie; Barry Mendel is. Financial support of the movie only concerns me because it is the best indicator of public interest, and is most likely to result in a sequel. Most of all, though, it's such an amazing movie, and it will reach the widest audience if it's a big hit this weekend.

You're emploring everyone to see a movie you haven't even seen
Gee, someone's a little PRESUMPTOUS. In case you weren't aware, there are these things called PREVIEW SCREENINGS. There were hundreds of them over the summer, most of them selling out within an hour, all of them jam-packed. (As an aside, btw, it's imploring not emploring. )

By worthy opinions, I mean the opinions of dozens of people with extremely good taste, including myself. And yes, I do decide what is good taste. It's my one true gift. ;)

I have no idea what you consider to be a 'respectable critic', but becaues this movie has not yet OFFICIALLY come out, there ARE no 'official' reviews of the film, at least not that I could find.

Bottom line: I can see you have an axe to grind with Joss; here is NOT the place to do it. This is about SERENITY, not Joss.

actually, reviewers generally get the advanced screenings, or copies of screener tapes to review the movie before release date.

"Horrible."
-- Victoria Alexander, FILMSINREVIEW.COM

"This is UPN-style storytelling and aesthetics trying to pass as serious filmmaking."
-- Ed Gonzalez, SLANT MAGAZINE

"Bounces around to sometimes memorable effect but rarely soars."
-- Derek Elley, VARIETY

"Whedon, who always delights in blending genres and tones, has assembled his most frantically disparate collection of pop culture quotations, boldly and cleverly going where plenty have gone before."
-- Matt Singer, VILLAGE VOICE

so far after one quick google all the reviews I've found have said if you aren't a fanboy of the show this movie is going to suck.

So.. if you don't think you're going to like it or it's not your thing, why do you care? Why participate in this thread .. except to be a jerK?

You don't have to go see it, and I'm sure you won't, so ...

Thanks. :)

I just have this thing about seeing things in the proper order. It's a huge pet peeve of mine. Firefly is a show I've been intrigued with for a while but have been too lazy to download and watch. I just didn't want ruin the series for myself.

I'm actually a big fan of Joss Whedon, so I think it's pretty safe to say that I also think this movie is going to suck. Even though I've previously loved Buffy and Roseanne.

I will end up seeing this movie, eventually, but calling it "movie of the year" and "absolute must see" is a bit crazy.

The solution is to go see SERENITY and BROTHERS GRIMM this weekend.

Well hey... I'm looking forward to seeing this... I've had the 1st (and only at this point...) season of Firefly on DVD sitting on top of the TV here at home but haven't been assed watching it yet. My housemates watched it and loved it, but they started watching it without me, so I didn't get into it then... I also have a thing about watching stuff in the correct order... But yeah, I've been told that you don't have to have seen the series to understand the film, which is a good thing :)

Everyone that I know that has seen Firefly has raved about it... no not the pills and plur raving... and not the frothing at the mouth raving either... jeez... you try to make an analogy and where does it get you...

So yeah, right... Serenity. Going to see it tomorrow :)

Much potential W00tage!!

CB :)

I saw it tonight and LOVED it. I'm a big fan of Buffy and Angel and an even bigger fan of sci fi, so when I heard that Whedon had made a sci-fi series I got staight onto a torrent of it . The series was FUCKING AWESOME - my all time favourite sci-fi by an absolute mile.

The movie was awesome, but I am really dissapointed. You could tell that it rushed through a story that was supposed to take a whole season to get though...

That extra season would have been off the scale... Seeing more about the Shepherd, Simon and Kailie's relationship developing. The hooker chick and the captain's relationship. More fleshing out of the pilot guy's character, more about the reavers and the federals..... (sorry I'm shit with names).

I hope this movie is the biggest grossing of the year, not so 2 more movies are made, but so 2 more SERIES are made. IMO Joss creates great characters, and is brilliant at fleshing them out, growing them and making you care about them over a season or 5 - fuck the movies!

By the way Souny, IMO - Buffy and Angel kick ass, Titan AE is a great film, Toy Story is an all time classic kids film, and Serenity/Firefly see above. So IMO Terry Gilliam V Joss Whedon - Whedon get's over the line in a close one!

So fuck Terry Gilliam. Fuck him in his stupid ass!
