I finally saw King Kong today. I loved the film, but it could have very easily been cut down to, at most, two and a half hours, without losing one bit of substance. The CG were amazing, for the most part, (spoiler: especially the creepy crawlies down in the canyon), which shot my discomfort level through the roof. There were a couple of parts that really bugged me.
Spoiler alert: (highlight) The first was when Kong ripped Ann off the sacrificial pole contraption, her arms (right arm, at the very least) should have been ripped right off, with that much force. Then, when Carl fell down in the dinosaur stampede, got up and shot at the little toothy monster in front of him, the muzzle flash looked so fake, it almost looked cartoon-like.
The ass-scapades on the frozen lake and Ann's drawn out theatre scenes before the Kong feature could definitely have been cut down... by about 90%.
The end line was VERY disappointing. It wasn't corny, it was plain out of place. You're spending two hundred million on a film and you can't afford to make up your own line, you have to borrow it from another fantasy tale?! Boo!
I know "it's just a stupid movie", as some would say, but if this much money and time is being spent on this project, you'd think stupid little details like these would be ironed out.
All in all it was a great film. The creepy crawlies alone were worth the money. Four stars out of five, only because of the bits mentioned in the spoilers.
