I finally saw King Kong today. I loved the film, but it could have very easily been cut down to, at most, two and a half hours, without losing one bit of substance. The CG were amazing, for the most part, (spoiler: especially the creepy crawlies down in the canyon), which shot my discomfort level through the roof. There were a couple of parts that really bugged me.

Spoiler alert: (highlight) The first was when Kong ripped Ann off the sacrificial pole contraption, her arms (right arm, at the very least) should have been ripped right off, with that much force. Then, when Carl fell down in the dinosaur stampede, got up and shot at the little toothy monster in front of him, the muzzle flash looked so fake, it almost looked cartoon-like.

The ass-scapades on the frozen lake and Ann's drawn out theatre scenes before the Kong feature could definitely have been cut down... by about 90%.

The end line was VERY disappointing. It wasn't corny, it was plain out of place. You're spending two hundred million on a film and you can't afford to make up your own line, you have to borrow it from another fantasy tale?! Boo!

I know "it's just a stupid movie", as some would say, but if this much money and time is being spent on this project, you'd think stupid little details like these would be ironed out.

All in all it was a great film. The creepy crawlies alone were worth the money. Four stars out of five, only because of the bits mentioned in the spoilers.

sort of spoiler:

yeah the arm thing annoyed me too. so did the footprint that the dude fell in, which supposedly was from a gorilla running at top speed, yet wasn't smudged at all

i've tried to watch this 5 times now... and i haven't been able to stay away even once.. long enough for them to even introduce the ape...

i'm still thinking about this movie. my first reaction is that the miniatures and CGI are beautiful. the level of detail on the Empire State Building is amazing -- the scratches on the windows, the bends in the metal, etc -- which is not to mention some of the other effects which are equally breath-taking. Lucas would do well to learn from Jackson and not make everything so austere and new-looking. WETA digital kicks ILM's ass.

wonderful film. but it made me a little depressed.

the 3 hours flew past. hardly noticed it.
Same here, I really liked it.

I took this girl I just met to see it. We were both surprised how late it was after it ended. Didn't even notice. She liked it too, the giant insects were creeping it out.

I found it hard to take Jack Black seriously, I was just waiting for him to bust into his obnoxious schtick. I see Jack Black I think Shallow Hal, School of Rock, etc - not serious roles. Same thing for Adam Sandler. Leonardo DiCaprio would have been awesome for that part.

The first 30 minutes were slow, but time FLEW BY as soon as they got to skull island. I thought the effects were awesome. I didn't care much for the hokey dance Ann did for Kong, I heard a collective "ugh" over the audience in the theatre I was in when she started that.

Kong looked really cool, very detailed and life like and I really liked the part with the dinosaurs. I give it 3 stars.

He did. I forget what part it was in but he did some really weird joke that didn't fit in the movie at all. I didn't like him in that role either, but that just sealed the deal.

i thought the whole cast, including the supporting actors, were all very good. it's hard to avoid looking at jack black when he's on screen. he seems to draw constant attention. admittedly, though, the last line didn't work 100%.

Okay I only saw this today (on HBO) and all I can say is: Wow. Omg. Wow.
I was thoroughly satisfied and I even cried a little bit in between shrieks.

^Haha I suppose I thought it was w0w! because I had absolutely no expectations, hardly remembered perusing this thread, and just happened to stumble upon it on cable tv......thinking I'd be bored and probably turn it off halfway. I love unexpected satisfaction ;)
