Full Metal Jacket = Hilarious in the Beginning

I watched this movie about 2 days ago and I couldnt stop laughing in the beginning training parts of the movie because of the drill Sargent. He was just fucking hilarious.

You climb like how old people fuck!"

"One pull up! Just one fucking pull up, Gomer!"
*Gomer fails* "Are you shittin' me?! You cant do one fucking pull up! Gomer, you really are a worthless piece of shit!"

"How tall are you?"
Sir, 5'9" Sir! "I didnt know they stacked shit that high!"

*Training recruit stumbles his words* Sir ... uh. "Were you about to call me an asshole!?"

"Do you suck dick?!"
Sir, no Sir! "Bull shit! You look like you can suck a golf ball through a watering hose!"

Then, when Joker was made to do his war face and he screamed "AHHHH!" The look on his face when he did that had to be made to be funny, cause I was rolling in laughter.

Another part where there camera got stolen in Vietnam, the oriental guy did all these martial arts moves in the air and Joker did em' back, but they didnt fight, they just remained in there original positions, and they did it so satirically.

Funny stuff.

The best part is that the guy is an ACTUAL drill sargeant! He was brought in as a consultant to help the actor be more convincing - but he was such a psycho and so fucking loud and abusive that they fired the actor and hired him to basically play himself! =D

The guy has a homepage I visited at some point, he is a total Marine Corps. fanatic!

Here is his page, charmingly titled: "DROP AND GIVE ME 25!!" - he has a DVD out and the announcement is: "LISTEN UP YOU MAGGOTS!!!" =D

One of the best war flicks ever...How about the part where the camera crew is panning across the line of dug in soldiers and they all have something cool to say? Good part.

What's your excuse scumbag ?

Sir, excuse for what sir ?

I'm asking the fuckin questions round here

Sir, yes sir.

Okay, can I be in charge for a while ?

Sir, yes sir.

My favourite is: Get the fuck off my obstacle Pile. GET THE FUCK offa my obstacle.

I was trying to say something about the duality of man, sir. The jungian thing.

Why don't you get with the team and come on in for the big win.

getting back on topic - I agree 100% - the movie is so serious that you just can't help but laugh - esp @ the drill sergeant... he makes the movie for sure. Kubrick genius at it's best.

The thing about FMJ is that it's uneven. Bear with me... It's a film with two sections which IMHO fit beautifully. The problem is not that the 2nd part is less effective. The problem is that R. Lee Ermey elevates the 1st half from effective to ball-breakingly classic, and so the first half sticks out like a sore thumb. Don't underestimate the 2nd half though. From the beginning of Joker's (and Cowboy's) stints to the Mickey Mouse marching song at the end is a good movie in and of itself (how apt to have the soldiers singing a disney jingle!!!), though the London docklands scenery is not totally convincing. Maybe because of the inevitable comparisons to cinematography in Apocalyse Now and Platoon. Boy I could bullshit about this movie for hours.

what do we get for $10?

Any-tang you wun...

Oh yeah, as a side note, my dad was in Vietnam and he doesn't really find the beginning as funny as people our age. And that is because the drill sergeants actually acted like that. They were allowed to physically harm you back then as opposed to now where they can't invoke physical punishment. Anyways, a classic movie. Definitely one of my favorite war movies of all time.

alabama black snake???

;)

it actually is a good war flick but most people (myself included i suppose)get so wrapped up in the comic element in the begining that they're not receptive to what the film is actually about... its what they're all about i suppose. war is fucked:\ its a poor transition from part one to two but i still love it

In case anyone was interested, as Morrison's Lament comments, R. Lee Ermey was hired after coming on set as a consultant.

As an example of a Drill Sargeant's 'skill' he went on a 15min tirade of abuse never repeating his obscenities, all whilst being pelted with tennis balls. Kubrick called it one of the most impressive displays he had ever seen and hired him :)

Anyone in the service feel free to correct me, but i believe that many dont find the first half amusing, becasue it is a realistic depiction of how some are treated in the army, and the consequences.
