Absolutely the best hollywood depiction of marine boot camp, hands down. Being a former marine, the movie gives me goose bumps every time i see it. Def one of my all time favorite flicks.

The door gunner was my favorite.
"Anyone who runs is a VC. Anyone who stays, is a well disciplined VC."

Then when asked how he could shoot women and children, he replied...
"Easy, you just don't lead them as much." lol

Leading is what they teach you in boot camp, on how to hit moving targets..lol. Priceless.

One of my all time favorites, for sure. Reminds me every day how glad I was to have joined "the new army" instead of the Marines. Kinda makes me laugh when I think about how tough the army drill's tried to come off as sooooo hard and so mean... they didn't have shit on Drill Instructor Hartman.

I read this whole thread hoping no-one had that quote and you ruined it for me, same goes for whoever had the "The ones that run are VC. The ones that stay are well disciplined VC". Easily my two favourite qoutes.
Awesome film, even with the disparity between first and second half. R Lee Ermey is by far the best army personality ever depicted on film. Also Vincent D'onofrio as Pyle was fanatstic, all in all great movie.

this is definitely my favourite kubrick.

it's the best war film ever made, and i think what makes it is the fact that you laugh the whole way through the film (well, mostly), but then when it's finished you're just left feeling disturbed.

disturbed because you wonder if you should have laughed at all; disturbed because of how realistic it managed to be in spite of its hyper-reality; disturbed because through all of it you were compelled to watch even though it felt...sorta...wrong.

i bet the people who decided the first gulf war would be a spectator sport learned a lot of their lessons from this film, or at the very least from the kind of things that it purports.
