The opening sequence (zooming out from earth into outer space, ending up as a reflection on her eye) is also pretty damn amazing.

Notice teh camera rise from an exterior shot to go through a small glass pane to become interior shot?

i think it's done when sh'e a kid and trying to reach her mum on her cb radio.

Yeah, I did notice that. The film is punctuated with clever little shots like that - most of them quite subtle.

It's when she goes upstairs (when the house is full of people after the funeral) and tries to speak to her dad on the radio. *weeps silently*

The crane pulls away from her, through the window, coming out for a view of the house and street. Yes, it was pretty cool too.

Great flick; pretty much agree with what you all said. I haven't read the book, but I place it amongst my favorites.
