fuck it looks like being a good year for arthouse films - already i've seen lost in translation (instant classic, imo) and mystic river (not as good, but certainly excellent) and this is to come. though, i guess, it's not quite so arthouse considering the cast...but, it's not exactly a blockbuster either. and then there's big fish to come, and assorted others.

i'm really looking forward to this - anyone who saw watts's mulholland drive performance knows she can do the whole harrowing performance thing real well, and i've never seen del toro nor penn take a wrong step *any* time. plus, the director...damn!

trust me, i dont know what the release date is where ur at 1234 ( oz/nz) but prepare to be blown away, penn is as good as i have ever seen him in anything, and watts is better than in MD. and del toro is ..well he is del toro i guess best way to descibe it is magnolia/memento/amores perros but SOOO much better than those 3 movies ( thats saying something) ...its a very deep film, very dark, not for people who dont like to think for a few hours after leaving the theater .. hope u see it soon whereever u are, but if u cant wait that long, its a region 1 dvd, on march 16. so i guess pre order it from amazon or something ...

i really enjoyed this movie. at first, i was confused because the story jumps around so much. but that helped to draw me into the lives of all the characters. and i thought all of the acting was supberb.

oooh i definately plan on seeing this, good looking out, I didn't know much about it when i heard it came out so i didn't check it out, though i will now :)

this is a GREAT film. truly. i have said it for a while: it's about time there is a woman (naomi watts) that is just as strong, emotionally, on film, as the men. none of those other leading ladies, including fellow aussie nicole kidman, can touch her. may be sally field in her time and meryl streep.
anyway, the film was even better than i thought it was going to be. and i was expecting good things.

i don't know the exact date (checking would require effort, so fuck that ;)) but i know it's soon. i'll be seeing it right away :D

If you guys liked this, go rent Amores Perros. There's a thread on it somewhere in the recesses of Bluelight and that's where I got a recomendation to see 21 Grams. Both are excellent and share the same director.

What a film: Outstandingly structured, character depth was awesome and the meaning of life is explored very strongly. Performances were just quality and man is Alejandro González Iñárritu really impressive, with 21 Grams and Amorres Porres already he is looking to be one hell of a director, would love to know if he has anything else coming up.

To finish off, go check this movie out, its excellent.

okay, i just caught it, and i've gotta say i think it was actually a little over-rated. sure, i think it's a *really* good movie, but people were talking about it like the second coming of jesus or something.

personally, i thought lost in translation was a far better film, and i might even edge mystic river ahead of it, too. not that that really matters - all three are still excellent.

the structure of this was kind of messy - many of the complaints have been about the unnecessary messing around with time, and it's totally true. this film could have easily been held up by its direction, dialogue and performances, so why (when it added nothing to the film, unlike pulp fiction) did inarritu feel the need to film it like that?

watts, penn and del toro were all superb though, as usual, except i actually don't think any of them (perhaps watts, but i'd still argue otherwise) were in "career best" form - something i've heard said a lot. watts was better in mulholland drive, penn was better in carlito's way and the game, and maybe even mr, and del toro was better in the usual suspects and fear and loathing..., and that's just off the top of my head!

the film's emotions really hit hard though, and i guess that's exactly what inarritu was attempting to do - make us feel, make us think. it worked, and it's a great film, but i feel as if it's almost a victim of its own hype - to an extent at least.

Just saw this this evening and was quite blown away. I liked the interesting editing effects with the 'time-jumps' in the opening sections, kept you on your toes, a little confused, but definitely attentive.

I definitely agree that recently it seems that Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro and Naomi Watts just can't seem to put a foot wrong. Superb performances by all.

CB :)

^^^ recently? del toro hasn't done anything bad since the usual suspects, penn couldn't act badly if he tried, and watts has been on fire from the beginning (md) :)

[edit: what i mean is that del toro was amazing in tus, and has been the same ever since :)]

I actually think the time jumping of scenes was great, and director gonzales does it so well, in some movies this effort really can spoil the movie but in no way did it hurt 21 grams, the structure IMO was high quality, once again, top stuff!

I was gonna say, The Usual Suspects was great, and Del Toro was great in it also ;)

But yeah again I agree, maybe bad terminology and all, but these are actors who I will always pay money to go and see :)

The concept was interesting, the acting was excellent and the scene-jumping was very well done.

Overall - it's a very good movie, but not quite Oscar-worthy.

3.3 stars (out of 4.0) on the LL-O-Meter.

Saw this the other night and was muy impressed.

I think I have to agree with brad though, I really did find the time/location jumping really jarring to begin with...I don't think it's a bad technique as such; just that I don't know if it should necessarily have been used so much to begin with. On the other hand, it was interesting having preconceptions blown out the water as I saw different characters spotlighted in completely different scenarios, so it's six of one and half-dozen of the other really...

One thing I'm really surprised that nobody's mentioned, either here or in any other review I've read, is the amazing job that Melissa Leo did (del toro's wife in the film). I think the three main actors were all outstanding anyway, but I honestly think that Melissa Leo stood out above and beyond them a lot.

Great film anyways....got me a bit teary every now and then....

I saw it few days ago, and the more I think about it, the more I like it. Althought I am not a big fan of non-linear story telling, the movie strikes an emotional response to the characters like no other movie I've seen in a long time. All actor performances are excellent, and much more worthy of an oscar than Mystic River was.
