i've been watching british comedies and hugh grant flicks lately to take a break from all of the excellent heavy movies that have come out on DVD recently. but the trailer for 21 grams is so well put together that i felt compelled to give this movie a whirl.

the film is a bit of a downer, for sure, but jeez, does anyone even come close to sean penn and benicio del toro as actors in their generation? maybe johnny depp is also in this league, but not many others. actor performances aside, 21 grams is almost a great movie. 'very good' seems like a better way to describe it. the chronological jumps are generally effective, though, i'm not convinced a linear narrative wouldn't have been just as effective, and not to mention, easier to follow. for me, the mood of the movie did not shift enough. there was not enough made of the contrast between the former lives of the characters, like the quick flashbacks in the final scenes, and the imminent doom the rest of the film portrays. still, a very good movie.

I don't understand how people can say the chronological jumps work and it's been well done.

Honestly, did the director purposely jump around in time just to piss the audience off? What in God's name did the chronology jumps offer to the movie? What the hell did they think it was going to accomplish? Make it more interesting? No. Make it more confusing for no good reason? Absolutely.

However, Benicios acting in this was great.

I really didn't like this movie all that much. I thought the actors did an excellent job (who doesn't love Penn and Del Toro?) but the chopped sequencing he did drove me up the wall. Some films have been able to pull this off but it's getting old. Furthermore, to me, he didn't even do a quality job of organizing the sequencing in a meaningful way so it was a pointless move to grab attention. Of course it may turn out that I'm just being nieve so these are just my observations.

Whilst I enjoyed the movie, I can't agree that the jumps in the order made it better in any way. I just found it unnecessarily confusing, making it awkward to follow. The story itself was interesting enough and did not have to rely on the fancy chronological sequence. If it weren't for these jumps I suspect it would be like so many other serious drama / thriller movies, so it seems they did it only to stand out from the rest, which isn't completely a bad thing.

Finally saw this on DVD. It was okay........I thought Naomi did a stellar acting job and I loved her here. Nevertheless....
the chopped sequencing he did drove me up the wall.
Ditto :!

*Trivial point*
While I have always found Benicio del Toro hot, it was kind of difficult to look at him in this movie lol...he was just...so... eyebaggy and bloated :p And those jesus scenes made me roll my eyes so hard.

Also, I VASTLY appreciated and enjoyed Amores Perros more than this one.
