Following on from the hype of the 2006 World cup, I sort of get the impression that Australia as a whole isnt quite so enthused this time round?

Anyways the team is down to just 31 players with 8 still to be dropped.

Whats everyones thoughts on how we might fair?

I'm really worried that we'll get rolled in and not survive past the initial rounds. Germany is in the same group as us and 95% of the teams are going to find them hard to beat.

Of course 2006 was coming off that killer penalty shoot out for the qualifier and the early growth of A-league, so the hype took care of itself. I think the hype will build more within 5-7 days of the opener and if Aus gets up in the first game the hype will be just as strong as 2006.

In regards to the team, I think they should select a good proportion of the best A-league players and mix it with the usual Premier league, Asian and Euro club players

Have to agree that there doesnt seem to be seem the buzz around this world cup but may pick up once it gets a bit closer. Although think now as a nation given our talent both here and overseas we expect Australia to be at every World Cup now. (Much easier now going through Asia)

Think the general consesus is that the squad we have this time is not as strong as the last one due to injuries and age. Combine that with a tough group and a lot of people are talking down our chances of getting into the second round.

Still hope we get a good result against ghana and serbia which will be enough to see us get there.

Think if we make it to the second round then it will be considered a successful campaign!

i think its an Australian thing to love being the underdog. It always lifts out spirits, people again expect results, but doubt we will go them.

i love it.

If we draw with Germany you watch all those people who have given the team no hope change. Just like Japan last time.

I don't think the Hype is here this time, but its a different time, we didnt have a team we hated to beat to get in like we did like Uruguay.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't this the Australia, NZ and Asia forum? :|

As every one knows the World Cup actually starts tonight. The only style I want to see is hard and late.........;)

You might forget the score but you can't forget the scars.

Soooo what does everyone expect us to win by tonight?

If Pim plays all the possibles instead of the probables then it might be as low as 2 or 3 but if he plays the first team then double figures may even be on the cards.

I dont even know why we are playing them.................it must of been annoying as crap for there players to have to come together for a one off match just to help us in our efforts at the World Cup. You have to rate the kiwis for helping us like that. I doubt we would bother helping them if was them going and not us.

To be honest I think the kiwis were a little unlucky to not get a few in and win. Lets hope the Socceroos have more than that in the tank in a few weeks.

Too old, too slow, too over rated. Calina was Australia's only really world class player from that performance. 4 years ago Neil, Bresciano (and perhaps Kewell) were at or near their peak. Last night it showed they were going to struggle to get even a point in South Africa. Most other countries have at least 1 or 2 players who play Champions League (which is a step or three above International standard), where as Australia have players that struggle to get off the bench in Switzerland. Cahill is a great player but he needs a classy player to create chances for him and Australia don't have anyone.

I thought the kiwis did well last night and the Aussies were well down on what may have been expected.

Busty, if what your sayoing is true then I hate to think what will happen to you guys.

I was pleased with our performance considering we have important matches in a few weeks time.

I would have been very worried had we won easily last night. The boys are in training mode and the match was little more than training and working on getting formations right and various stuff in preperation.

There would have been no prior prep done specifivcally for New Zealand. I will admit though that some was done at half time to ensure we didnt lose by more and as it turned out we came back and won.

The lads knew it wasnt a good performance and will respond accordingly and not go into the world cup to cock sure of themselves.

As for the kiwis...........I would like to hope they can get a point or even a few.

Oh Maz....

I wish I had logged on yesterday so I could chastise you before the kick off! It was always going to be a close match as Aussie were resting many players due to injury and NZ really wanted to win this one before they head off to the cup. That's right, we are going to the cup too! It was in each of our best interests to have a "friendly" game in our own back yard before we both headed off to Africa.

The odds on the game were really out if you ask me. I placed a bet on Betfair for NZ to win. They were paying $12.50. My plan worked a treat because once we scored the first goal their odds dropped as low as $2 and I managed to lay off for a tidy profit!

Unfortunately due to all our injuries during the game, we had subbed off 4 or 5 players before half time and the whole pattern of the game changed. NZ have a very competitive first 11 but unfortunately not a second 11 to be able to back us up. Although if Fallon had scored in the second half with that header then I could see us defending well enough to hold on for a great win. It wasn't to be, and Aussie being Aussie managed to pull off one of those last second miracles that occur oh so often in trans-Tasman battles. Bloody Aussies!!!!!

I watched the game on Park Rd in Brisbane last night. It was a great atmosphere and I'm sure it will once again be the place to be come World Cup!

Last night was the start of NZ world cup, I'd been surprised if they weren't up for it. For Australia is was a fans night to say farewell. Chris killen is a good striker when he was at Celtic and at least plays Premier league with Middlesborough now. Shane Smeltz is the best striker in the A league. They have the ability to score goals it just they like to let in too many. Last year at the Con Feds cup they lost 3-2 to Italy.... thats 2 more goals that Australia can score.

The last World cup I stayed up for I was stoked that they were on the same pitch a Brazil and Russia. It was as good as a point to score 2 against the Scots (pity they lost 5-2 ;) ). I don't seriously expect them to get through to the next round but Paraguay and Slovakia aren't worlds ahead of Australia either. At this stage I'd settle for a goal against Italy.

Chimp. lol.............actually brother I was trying to rev up busty but he knows me to well and didnt bite. I take my hat off to him.

Maybe we should put your strikeforce with our defence?

Actually that provides an interesting game.............who would you take from the kiwi team and slot into the Aussie squad for a super team?

I'd take our decidedly more stylish uniform for starters. How does Brazil consistently make yellow and green look good yet Australia's always looks like a Ken Done vomit special?

Ryan Nelson would give the defence the solid leadership it lacks. He is everything that Craig Moore wishes he was now he is pushing 40. Rory Fallon played for England all the way through to under 20's and despite only playing in the Championship he has consistently scored goals in the few games since he qualified for NZ that Scott MacDonald can only dream about.

I reckon he's a solid defender and leader. I disagree that our defence lacks leadership, I just think the other defenders are pretty average.

i saw something on sports tonight yesterday about Schwarzer going to Arsenal... He said its all talk at the moment, but even if he goes you wouldnt think he would be the first choice. Actually i just read that arsene wanger is out of sorts with his current keepers... Could be interesting... He is pushing on in age at 37, but good luck to him.

Another piece of the puzzle falls into place again for Australia, with Essien being ruled out for Ghana, yeah, there are another 10 players on the field, but he would of provided a lot of their goals.. makes it good for us =D
