I'm a female and I think feminism is still, in large, an illusion. Sure, changes have taken place within society, and that can't really be denied. But I think a lot of it comes down to what we envisage things will be like in the future, when these changes and their consequences have had time to span out.
However, people still operate under this illusion of feminism, and personally, I think things have swung too far in this direction. I've experienced way too many women happily abusing the power that they cannot yet handle. And nobody really wants to argue with them. Why? Because no one wants to have the finger pointed at them for being prejudiced. Apparently, women have a more than equal voice now, so everyone's meant to shut up and listen.
Argh, i know this sounds rather demoralising. I'm certainly not saying that a woman's right things like education, the right not to be sexually harassed, and all the 'nice' stuff are bad things. But ffs, too many women, especially the younger generation, seem to be flinging themselves on to the feminist bandwagon without really understanding the true meaning of the movement, and not making an effort to properly educate themselves. To me, a true 'feminist' is someone who is committed to going out into the world and making a difference over the long term. Feminism doesn't simply involve cutting one's hair short, sitting with one's (jeans-enclad legs) wide open, man-bashing with the girls over cocktails, and throwing the mother of all hissy-fits when one doesn't get one's way.
IMHO (an it IS just my opinion), it is still very much a man's world. And thankgod for that, because if and when things change, i hope to hell i'm not around to see it.
