Favourite song lyrics

Listen close, and don't be stoned
I' ll be here in the morning
Cause I ' m just floating
Your cigarette still burns
Your messed -up world will thrill me
Alison, I ' m lost
Alison, I said we ' re sinking
There ' s nothing here but that ' s okay
Outside your room, your only sister' s spinning
But she lies, tells me she ' s just fine
I guess she ' s out there somewhere
And the sailors they strike poses
TV covered walls, and so slowly
With your talking and your pills
Your messed -up life still thrills me
Alison, I ' m lost
Alison, I ' ll drink your wine
I wear your clothes, when we ' re both high
Alison, I said we ' re sinking
But you laugh and tells me it ' s just fine
I guess she ' s out there somewhere

Slowdive - Alison (beautiful song too)

I was going to post "you never know" by Immortal Technique. Problem is that he tells an entire story in that song, the lyrics are really really long. They are by far the best song lyrics I've ever heard though. But let's go with my second favorite lyrics, shorter but still so much truth in there :)

Simple Man - Lynyrd Skynyrd

Mama told me when I was young
Come sit beside me, my only son
And listen closely to what I say
And if you do this
It'll help you some sunny day

Oh, take your time, don't live too fast
Troubles will come and they will pass
You'll find a woman, yea yea, you'll find love
And don't forget son
There is someone up above

And be a simple kind of man
Oh be something, you love and understand
Baby be a simple kind of man
Oh, won't you do this for me son
If you can

Forget your lust, for the rich man's gold
All that you need, is in your soul
And you can do this, oh baby, if you try
All that I want for you my son
Is to be satisfied

Boy, don't you worry, you'll find yourself
Follow your heart, and nothing else
And you can do this, oh baby, if you try
All that I want for you my son
Is to be satisfied

Baby be a simple, be a simple man
oh,Be something you love and understand
Baby be a simple kind of man

"Silence"

All those places
Where I recall the memories
That gripped me
And pinned me down

I go to these places
Intending to think
To think of nothing
No anticipate

And somehow expect
You'll find me there
That by some miracle
You'd be aware

I'd risen this morning
Determined to break
The spell of my longing
And not to think

I freed myself from my family
I freed myself from work
I freed myself
I freed myself
And remained alone

And in my thinking
Steal you away
Though you never wanted me
Anyway

Silence
Silence
Silence
Silence

Through a door in the air
On a crumbling stair
In a clear and rushing vein
In a tunnel full of rain
In a piece of yellow light
On the skin of my eye
Are you there?

In the wind of my lung
In methane and in love
In petroleum plumes
There's a floating slice of moon
In your tooth and your claw
And your unforgiving jaws
Are you there?

In a burning white ship
In the taste of her lips
In the blood of the swans
As the sun fucks the dawn
In the mud of the lake
In the drunk and the dazed
Are you there?

In the now that is not
On a ladder to god
On a mountain stripped bare
With your hand in my hair
Behind the face of the sky
on a disappearing line
Are you there?

In the then that was now
In the now that is not
In our names we forgot
In a thought we just lost
We become what we choose
We are stumbling fools
Who are not there

There's some tangled dirty twine
In some idiot's clouded mind
There's some wires that wont unwind
Around the ankles of the blind
There's walls lined with soft lead
And in that room is your bed
Is that really you?

Jack's Mannequin - "The Mixed Tape"

This is morning
That's when I spend the most time
Thinking 'bout what I've given up
This is a warning
When you start the day just to close the curtains
You're thinking 'bout what I've given up

Where are you now?
As I'm swimming through the stereo
I'm writing you a symphony of sound
Where are you now?
As I rearrange the songs again
This mix could burn a hole in anyone
But it was you I was thinking of

I read your letter
The one you left when you broke into my house
Retracing every step you made
And you said you meant it
And there's a piece of me in every single
Second of every single day
But if it's true then tell me how it got this way

Where are you now?
As I'm swimming through the stereo
I'm writing you a symphony of sound
Where are you now?
As I rearrange the songs again
This mix could burn a hole in anyone
But it was you I was thinking of

And I can't get to you
I can't get to you
I can't get to you (you, you)

Where are you now?
As I'm swimming through the stereo
I conduct a symphony of sound
Where are you now?
As I'm cutting through you track by track
I swear to God this mix could sink the sun
But it was you I was thinking of

And where are you now?
And where are you now?

And this is my mixed tape for her
It's like I wrote every note
With my own fingers

Yeah he's one of the most gifted lyricists out there. He tells entire stories in his songs which is not something you come across a lot. There's only a few rap artists I really like - the ones that tell a deeper story as opposed to gansta rap - and he's right up there with the best

Keaton Henson - "You"

*"You"*

If you must wait,
Wait for them here in my arms as I shake
If you must weep,
Do it right here in my bed as I sleep
If you must mourn, my love
Mourn with the moon and the stars up above
If you must mourn,
Don't do it alone

If you must leave,
Leave as though fire burns under your feet
If you must speak,
Speak every word as though it were unique
If you must die, sweetheart
Die knowing your life was my life's best part
And if you must die,
Remember your life

You are
You are
Oh, you are
You are
Oh

If you must fight,
Fight with yourself and your thoughts in the night
If you must work,
Work to leave some part of you on this earth
If you must live, darling one,

Just live
Just live
Just live

THE AIRBORNE TOXIC EVENT
"Sometime Around Midnight"

And it starts
Sometime around midnight
Or at least that's when you lose yourself
For a minute or two

As you stand
Under the bar lights
And the band plays some song about forgetting yourself for a while
And the piano's this melancholy soundtrack to her smile
And that white dress she's wearing, you haven't seen her
For a while

But you know
That she's watching
She's laughing, she's turning
She's holding her tonic like a cross
The room suddenly spinning, she walks up and asks how you are
So you can smell her perfume
You can see her lying naked in your arms

And so there's a change
In your emotions
And all of these memories come rushing like feral waves to your mind
Of the curl of your bodies, like two perfect circles entwined
And you feel hopeless, and homeless, and lost in the haze of the wine

And she leaves
With someone you don't know
But she makes sure you saw her, she looks right at you and bolts
As she walks out the door
Your blood boiling, your stomach in ropes
And then your friends say "What is it? You look like you've seen a ghost."

And you walk
Under the streetlights
And you're too drunk to notice that everyone's staring at you
You don't care what you look like
The world is falling around you

You just have to see her
You just have to see her
You just have to see her
You just have to see her
You just have to see her

You know that she'll break you in two

KASABIAN
"Where Did All The Love Go?"

Ever took a punch
In the ribcage sonny?
Never met a soul
Who had no shrine
Keep this all in your mind
And get it inside my window
What do we pick up
Trying to kill each other?
You’re faking it son
Gonna get you tonight
I suck another breath
To the hearts of the Revolution
Coz you still ain’t right

Where did all the love go?
I don’t know, I don’t know
(I bet you can't see it)
Where did all the love go?
I don’t know, I don’t know
(I bet you can't see it)

Can’t see the signs
Of a real change a commin’
Take another sip
From your hobo’s wine
Get yourself a million miles
From the concrete jungle
This is a time
Full of fear full of anger
A hero's exchange for a telephone line
Whatever happened to the
Youth of this generation?
But you still ain’t right

Where did all the love go?
I don’t know, I don’t know
(I bet you can't see it)
Where did all the love go?
Now I don’t know why
Oh why

The rivers of the pavement
Are flowing now with blood
The children of the future
Are drowning in the flood

Where did all the love go?
Now I don’t know why
I don’t know why

[Instrumental]

In this social chaos
There’s violence in the air
Gotta keep your wits about you
Be careful not to stare
Oh-oh-oh-oh

Where did all the love go?
I don’t know, I don’t know
(I bet you can't see it)
Where did all the love go?
Now I don’t know why
Oh why
(I bet you can't see it)

i dont think we've had any Smiths lyrics yet on this thread 8o

THE SMITHS
"This Charming Man"

A punctured bicycle
on a hillside desolate
will Nature make a man of me yet?

When in this charming car
this charming man

Why pamper life's complexities
when the leather runs smooth on the passenger seat?

I would go out tonight
but I haven't got a stitch to wear
this man said "It's gruesome
that someone so handsome should care"

A jumped-up pantry boy
who never knew his place
he said "return the rings"
he knows so much about these things
he knows so much about these things

I would go out tonight
but I haven't got a stitch to wear
this man said "It's gruesome
that someone so handsome should care"

This charming man
this charming man

A jumped-up pantry boy
who never knew his place
he said "return the ring"
he knows so much about these things
he knows so much about these things
he knows so much about these things

The Fall; Realm of Dusk.

It's approaching
600 pounds gas and flesh
Robes in tatters
It's approaching
Lips and tongue abhorrent
Flickering lexicon
Or a stray dog pack leader

Hide hide, all good people hang out for a result
Hide dive hide, reasonable people in silence do exult
Realm of dusk

The Northerns
Look at the North ones
Their brains are unhinged by the sun

Rare stone
Our [faeces/faces] are rare stone
It comes to take them

Dave Stewart & The Spiritual Cowboys - This Little Town

I was out there in the middle of the day
Trying to make love to a shopping arcade
In northern England...
Outside it was raining and I was feeling insecure
Sooner or later you got to face the fact
This world is shattered and it's too full of cracks to fill in
So we just give in on a Thursday afternoon...
In this little town where the traffic moves slow in the pouring rain
I want to take you there where the four winds blow
To be born again
I was out there with the Beatles and the Cranks
Trying to make some money and not to fall into the ranks of suburbia
With Richard Toomey a visionary ghost...
Sooner or later we make the same mistakes
Our pockets are all empty and our spirit starts to break
Just like a baby left in the car park on a foggy new years eve...
In this little town where winter begins
In the summertime (summertime)

I want to take you there
Wash away our sins
And be born again
I was talking to some friends of mine trying to make some sense
After drinking a case of wine from Yugoslavia but just before
Breakfast we all started to agree... (wich was very unusual for us)
In this little town
In this little town
In this little town
In the pouring rain
I want to take you there
To be born again
In this little town
In the summertime
I want to take you there
And be born again
Born again...

Nirvana - Oh Me (originally by Meat Puppets)

If I had to lose a mile
If I had to touch feelings
I would lose my soul
The way I do

I don't have to think
I only have to do it
The results are always perfect
And that's old news

Would you like to hear my voice
Sprinkled with emotion
Invented at your birth?

I can't see the end of me
My whole expanse I cannot see
I formulate infinity
Stored deep inside me

If I had to lose a mile
If I had to touch feelings
I would lose my soul
The way I do

I don't have to think
I only have to do it
The results are always perfect
And that's old news

Would you like to hear my voice
Sprinkled with emotion
Invented at your birth?

I can't see the end of me
My whole expanse I cannot see
I formulate infinity
Stored deep inside me

I formulate infinity
Stored deep inside me

THE POGUES - THOUSANDS ARE SAILING

The island it is silent now
But the ghosts still haunt the waves
And the torch lights up a famished man
Who fortune could not save

Did you work upon the railroad
Did you rid the streets of crime
Were your dollars from the white house
Were they from the five and dime

Did the old songs taunt or cheer you
And did they still make you cry
Did you count the months and years
Or did your teardrops quickly dry

Ah, no, says he, 'twas not to be
On a coffin ship I came here
And I never even got so far
That they could change my name

Thousands are sailing
Across the western ocean
To a land of opportunity
That some of them will never see
Fortune prevailing
Across the western ocean
Their bellies full
Their spirits free
They'll break the chains of poverty
And they'll dance

In Manhattan's desert twilight
In the death of afternoon
We stepped hand in hand on Broadway
Like the first man on the moon

And "The Blackbird" broke the silence
As you whistled it so sweet
And in Brendan Behan's footsteps
I danced up and down the street

Then we said goodnight to Broadway
Giving it our best regards
Tipped our hats to Mister Cohan
Dear old Times Square's favorite bard

Then we raised a glass to JFK
And a dozen more besides
When I got back to my empty room
I suppose I must have cried

Thousands are sailing
Again across the ocean
Where the hand of opportunity
Draws tickets in a lottery
Postcards we're mailing
Of sky-blue skies and oceans
From rooms the daylight never sees
Where lights don't glow on Christmas trees
But we dance to the music
And we dance

Thousands are sailing
Across the western ocean
Where the hand of opportunity
Draws tickets in a lottery
Where e'er we go, we celebrate
The land that makes us refugees
From fear of Priests with empty plates
From guilt and weeping effigies
And we dance

Great song, MDB. Probably the best Pogues song not written or co-written by Shane.

This bit reminds me of drinking and singing with my dad:

Did the old songs taunt or cheer you
And did they still make you cry
Did you count the months and years
Or did your teardrops quickly dry

And this is just so evocative yet simple, and even more evocative if you read James Fearnley's excellent memoir of his Pogues days, Here Comes Everybody.

Then we raised a glass to JFK
And a dozen more besides
When I got back to my empty room
I suppose I must have cried
