Favorite anime?

what? damn...

i can't believe none of you mentioned...

Perfect Blue ... not only is this good anime, but as a mindbending thriller it excels any live action i've seen..

for second runner ups, please include (in this order)...

spirited away
princess mononoke
ninja scroll
my neighbour totoro
beautiful dreamer

incidentally.. i keep wanting to watch 'millenium actress'.. it's by the director of perfect blue, but whenever i go to the video/dvd store nobody in my househould seems content to watch an anime drama with minimal fantastical elements..
*sigh*

Weird, i was about to say the same thing about perfect blue last night dyscotopia, but then the board shut down and i went to bed :)
Indeed excellent movie, great storyline and animation.

Gotta give these series some attention too:
- Abenobashi Maho Shotengai, this show is hilarious, parodies movies and famous anime in a way guaranteed to have you laughing you ass off.
- Crest of the Stars, best sci-fi anime series after Cowboy Bebop.
- Love Hina, classic :)
- Noir, really cool and stylish action series about two female assassins. Story is pretty deep as well.
- Scryed, heavy theme and has more to it then you might think.

I used to watch a LOT of anime, haven't seen any new stuff in over a year now though (or is it 2 years by now), except for the occasional movie. I love Spirited Away for example.

While making this list and reading all these other great titles got me thinking, maybe i should het back into anime, I love it, it's great :)
Defenitely fun te remember all those series and movies again.

Oh btw, the best anime resource site is http://www.animenfo.com
Have a fun time browsing :)

fav anime series - Astro Boy!

movies - i like em' all (anime has a chocolate like effect over me) but the animation in Metropolis was fabulous :D and I generally have a soft spot for Osamu Tetzuka.

I'd say my favorite is Cowboy Bebop and I don't think that it gets enough credit but I'm also a big fan of: Vampire Hunter D, FLCL, Ninja Scroll, Perfect Blue, Escaflowne, the mandatory Akira, and Princess Mononoke.

GO ANIME!

Vampire Hunter D was the first anime I'd ever seen (on Cartoon Network when they first started airing...)

As for my favorites (In order)

Ghost in the Shell - not only good cell drawing; it was a thought provoking film as well
Akira - Awsome storyline and lots of explosive scenes
Princess Mononoke - I like this one because of its unique love story
Spirited Away - One of those movies that just take you to another plane
Wings of Honeamis - A laid back melodramatic film; something to watch on a rainy day.

OOOH NOOOOO AN OTAKU THREAD!!! heheh man favorite anime? thats so hard to choose, these are definately my favorite titles though

Akira(classic, first anime movie i ever saw)
Ninja Scroll (same as above, its what got me seriously into anime)
Perfect Blue (great mind fuck, definately see this film if you think anime is
just silly cartoons)
Neon genesis Evangelion(the best mecha style anime EVER, no mecha anime will ever compare to this)
Serial Experiments Lain(great cyber anime if yer into computers and movies that make you think)
Love Hina (one of my favorite romantic comedy anime's to date, and it doesn't suffer of ranma 1/2 syndrome where it takes 6 years of airing it on TV before they finally get together!)
Princess Mononoke (Untill recently was the 2nd most profitable movie EVER in japan)
Spirited Away(beat princess mononoke, see both)
Kodomo no Omocha(if you've heard of marmalade boy you must see this first! it's one of the most classic anime's about student's falling in love, came back on for a 2nd season due to popular demand)
marmalade boy(see this after kodomo no omocha)
Kare kano or his & her circumstance(see this after marmalade boy, GREAT series about love).
Check out Rurouni Kenshin the OAV series if you liek serious feudal japan style action/drama
Trigun, lighthearted western gun style action that grows into something more serious along the way, also recommended
Cowboy Bebop is great
Record of Lodoss War (its more story than action, but its a damn good story)
hmmmm, i can't really think of anymore right now, i've seen waaay too many, but i'm sure i'll post some more if any come to me, shoudl be enough of a list there where if you're looking for anything you should be busy for a few hours.

I know spirited away, akira, ninja scroll, and princess mononoke are all at blockbusters, I've seen all of record of lodoss war at a hollywood video around here but no guarantees they have it everywhere

oooh good call with boogie pop phantom, just saw that not long ago, its good. Also, i got sitting at my house is 'millenium actress'. Haven't watched it yet but its made by the people of perfect blue, and its very similar in style.

Lately my bro has been getting me into Naruto, and I am blown away. It is sorta like DBZ or Yu Yu Hakusho but a little less childish and a little less drawn out (pacing issues in both those shows are horrendous). Plus, our friend has a mod chip in his PS2 so we've been getting into this 2 player fighting game from Japan based on the game, I have to say its the best game I've probably ever played in the fighting genre.

Back when it first came to America I was all about DBZ (this consisted of me and my boys getting incredibly baked after school and getting in a round or two of WWF Warzone on the N64 before we got to see Goku running down the Serpent Road for months on end).... but nowadays I have to admit there are MANY better anime series. However, Akira Toryuma (sp?) is one of the best character designers there is (A Legend of Zelda anyone?)

My experience with Anime is relatively limited (relatively in that I am still a geek just not so much in the Anime vein). But my favorite series hands down is Fooly Cooly (or FLCL). I've seen Akira (thought it was pretty cool), and Ninja Scroll (thought it rocked). But FLCL is just so weird and non-anime-like I'm hooked.

Action Anime:

1. Akira - one of the best movies i have ever seen.

2. Princess Mononoke - Also one of the best movies i have ever seen.

3. Fist of the North Star - I was tripping so fucking hard when i saw this. Colors were coming out of the tv at me and the characters popped infront of me at times. Plus the slow-mo shit the animators did at time was pure eye-candy.

4. Ninja Scroll - Just though this was a damn good movie also.

5. Vampire Hunter D - Interesting story

Romantic Anime:

Oseam Part 1 - Very different... i like it. The MOST colorful movie i have ever seen. The attention to detail in every seen is absolutely amazing, the scenery is so incredible. Anyone know of any other movies created by the same people, or in similiar matter?

Hoshi No Koe - Also different... didn't like it as much.

Trippies - Is perfect blue really that good? I have it sitting around but i never watched it. I might really soon now...

Romantic Anime is definetly the rock bottom of geekdom. If you can cry while watching anime, I think you have a problem.

I'd have to say that neon genesis evangelion wins by a large margin.

as a runner up I think it would be ninja scroll.

Movies:
Akira
Ghost in the Shell
Urotsukidoji:Legend of the Overfiend (parts 1-8)
Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz
Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack
Vampire Hunter D and Bloodlust
Golgo 13: the Professional
Rojin Z
Princess Mononoke
Poltergeist Report (Yu-Yu Hakusho movie)
Wicked City
Demon City Shinjuku
Grave of the Fireflies
Fist of the North Star

Series:
anything Gundam except for SD Gundam
DBZ
Yu-Yu Hakusho
Cowboy Bebop (gotta love it)
