I recently developed HPPD* and I thought it might explain the afterglow of MDMA/other drugs, you know when you first take MDMA, after you've got over the comedown you still feel pretty good, like you have some new happy outlook on life, for me it last around 3 weeks after my first use, I probably took 300mg of unknown purity MDMA (it changed my personality so much some crazy homeless guy spoke to me while I was queuing for something in Tescos and normally I'd just ignore him but instead I was nice to him and treated him decently) although as soon as I started abusing MDMA I couldn't really feel any after-glow, it might have still been there just not as noticeable.
Now HPPD causes psychedelic visuals for long after the drug is out of your system and there are theory's that its caused by neuron growth at the 5-HT2A receptor (neuron growth at that receptor would mean that your brain functions like you're still on the drug since the drug has caused those receptors to grow), maybe the afterglow of MDMA is caused by the massive amounts of serotonin stimulating neuron growth at whatever receptors it targets.
If this is true low dose MDMA could be a new type of anti-depressant? like 5mg MDMA every 3 days or 100mg MDMA every three months to stimulate nerve growth and keep the afterglow, my HPPD lasted 6 months so it defiantly lasts a long time. Obviously this doesn't have to been done with only MDMA, I should imagine it could be done with any drug that stimulates activity of natural neurotransmitters, so you could try various releasing agents see which one you like and use it to stimulate that state of mind in everyday life.
I think this puts a logical explanation to the after-glow and also a positive to responsible drug use over no drug use at all. (not drug abuse)
I think I'm actually going to try it and post my results, I'm on St John Worts at the moment and it has helped a lot but I don't like the restrictions its had over my drug use, raves aren't as fun sober (but then again using MDMA at raves might ruin the after-glow schedule thing I would have to stick to)
EDIT - btw neuron growth isn't some bullshit idea I just made up its a valid scientific theory possibly fact I haven't looked into it
