How long can one keep a solution of cocaine and saline in a spray bottle before bacteria growth becomes an issue?--1 week? After a few days, is it too late to add alcohol to clean up mixture? Any help welcomed, thanks

Is it just cocaine, salt and water or is it a commercially prepared saline solution that also has preservatives in it?

Yeah is there a preservative in the saline, such as benzyl alcohol? If it's a home made solution you could buy some benzyl alcohol and add enough to make it .9% benzyl alcohol (per mL i believe.)

Keeping it in the fridge will also slow the growth of bacteria.

And if you don't mind me asking, why are you keeping your cocaine in a solution for intranasal use, or did i misunderstand and you're Iving?

What are you planning to do with the solution? If you are putting it in your nose, I dont suggest alchohol.... I'm guessing you used store bought saline and that its fine. Bacteria growth is pretty variable but if you are the only one who has used the bottle, thats likely the least concerning issue...

^^^If a solution of .9% benzyl alcohol is safe for your veins, it's most likely safe for your nose. Thats pretty heavily diluted... Though if i am wrong a source as to why would be much appreciated. :)

Thank you all for your replies, I apologize for being vague before...it was late. I asked b/c my friend had made the solution so that he could insuflate (snort) the cocaine discreetly while on a vacation where privacy is hard to find. He used pure saline from a store, no preservatives, just sodium chloride, and has had it for about a week. When snorted, he says that it produces MORE mucus than powder, since he filtered out non-water solubule material, he thought the excess mucus may be b/c of bacterial growth, though the solution has not changed in appearance.

Caseface- I was thinking more along the lines of common alcohols, as in vodka, 40% or worse rubbing alcohol. It didnt occur to me to even consider another source, my bad!

About the mucus and snorting liquid- Ive tried this and had the same experience when using it right away. I think that its simply a result of...well, having liquid in your nose. My intention was to reduce septum damage, so now that I think about it, if you have more mucus in your nose keeping things moist, that might actually be beneficial despite the annoyance, if I am correct? Or it could just mean the cocaine isnt being absorbed, since its a vasoconstrictor and should dry out the nose. Anyone else have any experience?

That does kind of make sense to me now that you've pointed it out. Whenever my friend cleans his nose with saline at the end of the night, even small amounts of the liquid seem to loosen up the mucus and powder residue, leading to a large volume of "gunk" when blown out.

As to the vasoconstriction, my friend has another question he was hoping someone could answer.... After snorting cocaine all day, when his nose is properly cleaned out, the last bunch of snot in the tissue is clear, BUT, in the morning, he will rinse with pure saline again, and a sheet of mucus and powder residue will be blown into the tissue. (Like a thin sheet of hard snot with caked up white powder covering the other side of the snot), So his question is this....

Is there a maximum amount of time when snorting cocaine before the nasal membranes stop absorbing the drugs? I.e., will the capillaries in the nasal membrane eventually become so constricted that snorted drugs simply will not be absorbed? My friend is very curious b/c he has been using daily for months and has only noticed this phenomenon recently. Could it be a sign of necrosis? Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks

Wow you must be really close with your friend, inspecting his snot and all... ;)

I dont understand what you mean about the layer of powder in the morning, after youve rinsed with saline the night before. What is the other side of the snot youre specifying?

In anycase, I presume theres only so much that can permeate the membrane. I couldnt tell you anything exact, just that after a certain point, anything I try to put up my nose just falls back out :/

Cocaine is an ester, it will slowly degrade if kept in solution. Best to keep it dry and away from heat and light if you want to keep it potent.

Could you please elaborate on why water is cocaine's enemy? Or why cocaine is unstable in water? That friend of mine worked in a laboratory where he gave rats daily injections of cocaine. The cocaine was in a sterile saline solution and made in 225ml batches, 1 batch would last around 3 weeks or more. It was simply kept in a regular refrigerator and never did degradation come up. As this was part of a study I imagine any change in potency would have been accounted for

The slow degradation probably is minimal; tolerance is inevitable so the dose will go up qiucker than the degradation can effect this.

It's insignificant.

Heroin will hydrolyze into morphine quicker; this is why diamorphine is a dry ampule.

My mistake. Cocaine in water is fine as long as the water isn't too acidic or basic. Use distiled or bottled water if you don't want to check the pH of your tap water.

It seems to be cocaine chemistry week around here heh

Anyway, just checked all the saline I could turn up. I found three different types (packets of dry ingredients to be mixed with distilled water, commercial pre-mixed solution in a squirt bottle, commercial pre-mixed solution in an aeeosol can...also have an iv bag of medical grade saline for intravenious infusion not for nasal use so I left it out) they all consisted of sodium chloride, and sodium bicarbonatenone. None contained any alchohol or other preservative ( On a tangent however, the aerosol can specified the sodium bicarb as being a buffer to prevent burning, perhaps cutting coke with baking soda is actually beneficial!)

So, would it be poiintless to add any alcohol or other preservative? Sorry to rehash this but I dont see the use of adding more chemical compounds to remove some possible bacteria- the bacteria is probably less threat to ones nose i would think?

Ok I think I just did my head in! :D

^the benzyl alcohol/other preservatives prevent bacterial growth which is inevitable when you have unsterile illicit drugs added to water... its essentially a petri dish otherwise.

OK, so is this bacteria from the cocaine? Or from the bottle having contact with someones nose? And Im confused about the sodium bicarbonate used in the commercial stuff as a preservative- is that effective enough? I sometimes leave my saline rinse for a week or more =/

OTOH Im thinking, if cocaine can eat away a persons septum, shouldnt it eat away bacteria in the nose?

"Cane2theleft", could you please clarify your previous post in the following aspects...

1) Why would adding a non-sterile illicit substance to saline yield more bacteria than adding the non-sterile salt packets to saline? (Some nasal rinses come only as a bottle and packets of plain sodium chloride w/out any other ingredients which is to be added to sterile water)

2) If in fact this ROA creates conditions for bacterial growth should it simply be avoided? I have seen many here (moderators included) advocate the cocaine + saline spray as a safer way to use cocaine, is that then incorrect?

3) Will adding alcohol or something else a few days after the solution has been made kill aby bacteria present? If so, what alcohol or other substance would you suggest, and how much should one add to 7ml's of said mixture?

Thank you in advance

Bacteria is literally on everything that you see and touch (including any opened spray container, any water you add to packets, and anything that has been exposed to touch or open air.

Things that are sealed and 'sterile' have usually been packaged in such a way that they're sealed and then irradiated as a part of the manufacturing process (all medications and drugs are processed this way.) Preservative does not mean that it sterilizes the solution, it just keeps it stable for use.

Cocaine is cut with all sorts of things, which not only exposes it to bacteria at many points but also provides food for the bacteria (many times the cuts contain some form of sugar or other nutrient that bacteria can thrive on.)

Dumping all this together and then leaving it in a room-temperature container for a week creates an excellent environment for bacteria to multiply and grow (on average, bacteria divide every 20 minutes.)
