Exercise 4 Health, Mental Health, and Addiction vs. The Endorphin Factory

When I look up calories burned for commonly done exercises on a website, it lists mowing the lawn, cleaning, vacuuming, etc., Hell yeah, work counts as exercise. Just think that it was not too long ago in history when exercise was not even heard of... because it was so much work just to keep a family going and put food on the table. Also, the older we get the more limited, generally speaking, our energy reserves are, so we can only do so much before we feel exhausted. I do my walking only on days when I don't do strenuous housework or gardening. Today, I babysat 7 hours for a 15 month old... I had to chase her around, pick her up and put her down, bring her upstairs for nap time, etc., etc., I did not have any energy left to go walk. But, it is hard to quantify exactly how much I did... I just know my mood is improved.

I'm still hitting the gym 3 days a week. But it is difficult becaus I have not had a day off work since last month and I'm pulling this night shift malarkey. I'll have 72 hours this week, had 65 hours last week.

I'm still hitting the treadmill after my workout but for the time being I'm not running on rest days. I'll tell you why: with all this exercising I've been doing, I now want to drop weight - you know, actually look like I hit the gym. Plus i know that dropping 40 lbs will do more for my energy levels than anything else. If I want to keep as much muscle as possible while losing weight then I shouldn't run on my rest days. Because I'm limiting calories I need to give my muscles every chance to recover that I can. All I've done diet wise is clean it up, pay attention to protein, carbs and good fats, eat reasonable portions and not eat junk and in 1 weeks I've dropped 6 lbs. I know that kind of weight loss is not sustainable but the first week one is losing a lot of water as well. But it floors me how easy the weight is coming off just by paying attention to diet.

I do admit that I will miss running because as an ex smoker cardiovascular health is of primary importance to me. But once the weight is off, I can start running again (and eating more as I'll be burning a lot more calories).

I have gained a ton of weight since I got clean, muscle. Been off of the gym for the last two days, need to get back asap.

Back to the gym today! Not as bad as I was expecting. Not at all like a month ago, when I started doing it more seriously. Feels good.

I remember always hearing that you need to break a sweat when you work out to achieve results, that is so not true.

Erikmen-
do you ever get a "runner's high" type feeling when your working out? I chase that feeling like a drug, that is what keeps me coming back for more everyday.

I agree sweat mostly has to do with body cooling. A major factor in the body being able to be cooled is mass and surface area. I have a large mass with limited surface area. I really quite in shape and sweat with very little labor.

A smaller person with no body fat can do all they wish with little or no sweat.. not me lol.

But increased breathing and struggle are very beneficial for the neural plasticity, neurotransmitter production and release. But will induced pain such is found if yoga can also have similar and independent amazing results.

Im back to the gym in the next three days guaranteed. I have been doing prolonged movement, lifting, and stretching and labor and i feel great.. just loosing some strength and muscle.

So tomorrow is a short hike day at Grouse Grind (Grouse Mountain). Been training for this for the last two months or so. I know I will kick ass but I shouldnt expect anything. I def would like to do better than my time last year.

Going into the new gym right now.. walk, run, lift legs chest and arms. Going to not overdue it as I have not lifted in the gym for three weeks, but still charge.

edit:
Wow.. best i have felt in over three weeks. Gym is ugly as sin, but the equipment is pretty nice.
