Ever feel like opiates are synthetic happiness (in a bad way)?

When you're really addicted, it's like being in another world. I have made so many mistakes and made really bad judgement calls under the influence of opiates that I just had to get on Suboxone to pull myself back down to reality. Yeah, it's false happiness and contentment for things missing in our lives. That's what makes a junky's life so sad. Synthetic happiness because we lack things in our lives, or maybe chemically in our brains to feel like others. But most people have not touched the forbidden fruit, therefore live normally, looking forward to Fridays, having sex and eating a good meal that satisfies their need for happiness in life. Basically, our brains are hijacked.

That hit me hard. I don't know why none of the other posts did..but you just have a way with words that makes things really clear. Nice post man.

Opioids are synthetic happiness.
Opiates are natural happiness.

haha thats funny

for me, i think "opiate synthetic happiness", as you put it, is a bad thing when it comes to addiction, but if you can just do it occassionally and not succumb to addiction i think it's ok (but those people are in the minority imo)
although i havnt abused opioids in quite awhile, and have just been on my regular pain managment schedule of Opana, Soma, and Lyrica which doesn't get me high, i'm on relatively small doses of each, and thats how i like it now, just taking my meds as prescribed... getting high once in awhile is ok in my book though;)...

Well.. opiates are my DOC but none of the less O.Cs are. I have been into opiates for about 10 months and its been nothing but down hill. I went from doing 40-60mg up to 580mgs in a single day from when I woke up til I went to bed. I have been tampering down and cutting down. But to say synthetic happiness, from an opiate addict, I think once you reach the stage of physical dependency the only time your happy is once your on the opiates. It feels like it your whole body is taken over. All in all.. I wish I had never started these in the first place.

What is happiness really other than having the right chemical balance in your dome and the attainment of appropriate spiritual balance in and of your soul?

well i recall taking hydrocodone when i was more into alcohol and benzos and feeling that it was too forced a form of happiness. not that the alcohol euphoria isn't forced, it is. the difference is that alcohol and benzos stupified me enough to not care about why i was feeling (or not feeling) things. on opiates, i felt like there was a warm blanket between me and my problems but i could still clearly see those problems though the warm blanket and i understood too well that the opiate was going to wear off and my blanket would be gone. with alcohol and benzos, i simply didn't care. with cannabis, it was the exact opposite and i almost always felt like i was receiving some great wisdom from it even though this proved untrue. it lead to confusion instead.

Exactly!!! Couldn't have said it better myself! lol:)

I've heard a lot of people on this board say that opiates feel like fake/synthetic happiness. For me, when I am truly high on an opiate, the euphoria is so intense that I couldn't possible care less if it feels synthetic.

I have a lot of issues though that opiates are perfect for helping me with. I am a chronic pain sufferer without the support of any doctors so I take matters into my own hands.

I have been down the road of addiction using poppy pods, but I was very lucky that this form of an opiate was very self limiting (my addiction could only grow so large that it eventually was uneconomical to use) and I never got too far down in the hole.

These days I function right on the edge of addiction. I use infrequently enough to be able to sustain moderate euphoria (for me every 3 days or so) and infrequently enough to keep myself functional on my days without opiates.

My technique is not full proof though. I still yawn constantly when I'm not high and I experience mild insomnia occasionally but to me it's worth it just to feel bliss every couple of days. *shrug*

So I suppose they are synthetic happiness in a bad way, but nothing is comparable to the euphoria I experience on opiates. I know what it feels like to get pumped up and get natural endorphins going, but for me it's just not the same.

Maybe I'm getting into semantics here... But I wouldn't describe an opiate high as "synthetic." I would however describe a cocaine/crack high as "synthetic and fake feeling."

As for which feels better, opiate induced happiness or non-drug induced happiness, I think that's quite subjective. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

Cut out everything in the second half of your sentence and you are spot on.

Life is short and happiness is subjective, for me (and most I would imagine) opiates produced 'true happiness' as long as I could also find it other places.

when they get a monopoly on your happiness....and eventually your suffering .. thats when you realize how synthetic they are.

But I say whatever makes you happy(est).

Opiates are an opportunity cost situation... there a sure thing, a measurable amount of happiness right now guaranteed with no questions asked. But by choosing opiates your choosing not to do whatever you normally would of with your money and time. (something far more productive long term no doubt)

but in a much more concrete sense, no, the happiness didn't feel the least bit fake. Thats how they get you.

Well fucking said.

I see what you're saying, and I could see it being true with plenty of addicts I have met. But, for me it was a different situation. One of the main reasons I used opiates heavily wasn't because how good they were alone; it was because how much better they made everything else feel. From the worst task, to the most pleasurable, performing it on opiates was so much better.

One of the worst reasons to use imo, as opposed to the normal "I'm numbing the pain," "they feel really good," "I'm addicted to the ritual," "it's the cool thing to do," etc.

I am opiated right now, and sure its "synthetic happiness" but so what? People work out to feel good; I take a drug to feel good. People make love to feel good; I make love and take drugs and feel GREAT. Opiates can enhance the dullness of day to day life, and if taken responsibly, have no side effects...I have reached a level of mental furfillment through opiates that no one has touched through excercise, plain sex or other "natural" reward centre activites. You haven't lived if you haven't experienced an opiate high, imo. People have all sort of preferences about how to make themself happy. Some jump out of a plane, others work out, gamble etc. Instead I shoot up/take a pill, the end result is the same, and the brain cannot determine whether the stimuli which done this was natural and synthetic...Say in an alternative society in the Gullivers Travelers vein taking pills were considered the natural way to experience happy, whereas excercise etc was viewed as drug use...It's because our society attaches such a negative stigma to drugs in the first place, that we in some way convince ourselfs that we are wrong to take them to feel happy

I feel like that all the time. I'm aware morphine/heroin/other opiates or opioids only fill the hole inside me. That hole is desperate need of true love. And only true love could bring me real happiness. But life is brutal to me and my relationships always end up badly or I just choose inappropriate girls.

I'd rather feel forced happiness than no happiness at all. I'm sick of feeling chronically shitty regardless of what I do sober, almost a decade of feeling dead inside will make you grab onto any form of joy, artificial or otherwise.

I totally agree. I prefer artificial happiness than feeling dead inside chronically. Psychiatry disappointed me all along the line. So there's nothing left for me than opiates and benzodiazepines and I don't mind dependence on these things if nothing else can heal my pain like in this The La's song about heroin: 'and no one else could heal my pain'.
