Misc Emsam(Selegliline)

Not sure where to post this. Mods, feel free to catergorize me correctly.

I have found a few threads on selegiline but not any on Emsam. Emsam is just a transdermal delivery system for selegiline. I know selegiline has been popular as a smart drug and people have ordered it online.

I am hoping to have this prescribed to me by a doctor and have no intention of ordering it.

I am wanting recent experiences with the drug. I have treatment resistant depression and have built a tolerance to benzos. For anxiety I am wondering how propranolol will do but back to the depression.

I have tried every SSRI and wellbutrin like 49494 times. It is absurd if I think about it really. I am hoping this stuff may help me. At this point I am considering ECT and ketamine infusion. I do not know where to go from here. Lyrica helped me so so much but simply stopped working.

I hope to have Emsam prescribed in the near future and see if it works. Anyone with advice or experinces related to Emsam, please do post. Thanks.
 
Propranolol is excellent if you have anxiety with a lot of physical symptoms.

I've been extremely impressed with selegiline, although I think the Emsam patch is really quite silly. I think the whole patch thing is basically just a pointless marketing gimmick for a drug that works fine orally. It's a freakin irreversible MAOI... how is putting it in a patch going to make its effects even more consistent? 8)
 
yep. it's called evergreening. the pharmaceutical companies constantly take an older drug that has gone generic and tweak it slightly so the trademark is back on again for years to come. not a new practice really but yes it is stupid as fuck from an end user point.

i went so far as to even write a letter to the dr so she could see how bad my situation is and how much i need help. she refused to script it though and instead just raised the antipsychotic im on to levels not even approved by the fda! yeah i know it makes no sense- she was afraid to script this drug because of its profile but will give me huge doses of some shit that hasnt even been used in those dosages before. i dont know. it is such a tiring game.

i REALLY need help with motivation, getting out of bed, focusing, memory, and all of this ties into my depression. i was really looking forward to trying selegiline. now i have to wait at least a week or two while she checks to make sure it is not contraindicated with buprenorphine. im pretty fucking sure it is not and told her that but she is simply too scared to script it. im not giving up though. i want to give this med a shot and i think i deserve that.
 
now the dr wants to try other meds first. i cant understand why she is so hesitant to prescribe this. it has been years and years of trying the same meds over and over again. i am getting so frustrated.

Probably because it is an irreversible MAOI and thus interacts with a shitload of things. Doctors tend to shy away from MAOIs if they can help it.
 
There are no known interactions between Emsam and Abilify.

I also ran a check on Zyprexa, Geodon, Invega, and Risperdal and didn't turn up anything.

If there are interactions, they're not common.
 
huh. i started taking 6mg of Emsam today. did not feel much. i actually got really tired and fell asleep for a while.

im thinking maybe i need to wait for the abilify to wash out before i can feel the full effects of selegiline. what do you guys think?
 
You will notice small effects in the first week but it takes time for the neuro-transmitters to build up and gain you the real beneficial effects.
Just be careful with selegiline. Maoi's are a dangerous class of drugs, thats one of the reasons that SSRI's were developed (as a safer alternative).
 
yeah i know there are dietary restrictions, but with the patch they dont apply. the drug interactions are what to look out for.

if one were to use methylone/mdma they would have to go off emsam for a day or two right? the half life is like 1.5 hrs so i think that would be safe....right?
 
Why risk it? We can all feed you "it will be fine" or "it isn't recommended" all day but the fact of the matter is that there is always a chance of things going south and that goes double for MDMA with an MAOI because of the potential for serotonin syndrome.
 
oh shit. so i would have to stop emsam for 2 weeks before using methylone? i have only been taking it a few days so maybe i should just stop now and resume after the weekend.

It won't make a difference.

Irreversible MAOIs bind to MAO permanently. Whatever receptors have been affected will be affected until they're replaced. That process takes 7-14 days.

That said, 6mg per 24 hour period is a very low dose and doesn't have dietary restrictions but I'd still be careful with serotonin releasing agents.
 
woah. i am learning a lot here. so irreversible binding to MAO means it is will still interact with serotonin releasing agents for 14 days?
 
Basically it means that irreversible MAO inhibitors are effective until the body replaces the enzyme.. That process can take 7-14 days.

Selegiline is an irreversible MAO-B inhibitor in the low dose that you're on so the more important MAO-A is still functional but it really is better to play it safe than sorry with MAOIs.
