Changes in set and setting can manifest physical changes in how our bodies process chemicals. A disproportional number of drug overdoses occur in unfamiliar environments because of this. A dose that was tolerable in one environment can prove fatal in another due solely to the lack of conditioned tolerance. It appears this phenomenon has been most thoroughly documented in regards to heroin though the principle of conditioned tolerance applies to drugs in general.

"When rats are given a large dose of morphine following morphine dosing in an environment substantially differing from the one in which they experienced the effects related to morphine, signs of overdose rapidly appear and in a few cases lead to the death of the rat. In contrast, in the case of rats where the morphine is dosed in the same circumstances the same size dose has a substantially smaller effect since the substance was given in the accustomed environment and so they were "expecting" its effect."
Physical stress is also a major factor. A person who lives a sedentary life style and rarely breaks a sweat is going to be testing their body dancing for four hours in the heat on stimulants. This has been a recurring issue. Last year at some of the E.D.C. venues air conditioning, and subsequently temperature, was a problem. Does anyone know how hot it was?
It is always disappointing to hear of something like this. It might have been an uninformed pattern of use or misrepresented drugs that are to blame. Having been to this type of event my bet is on bad habits rather than bad drugs.

Good posting!
Basically, those who deny MDMA might be the cause of these fatalities are deluding themselves. It could indeed be the cause. MDMA death rates increase in hot, crowded conditions & that gig looks well crowded.
MDMA has caused dozens if not hundreds of fatalities here in the UK over the years. Often it is the only substance found, often alcohol is also found. Mostly, the deaths are post-club or at a club. Often, the dead are young people, under 30 & usually early 20's. See how many of those criteria are met by these reports?
All the popular RC's & MDMA analogues such as Methylone, PMA & the APB's all mimic some of the effects of MDMA so they also carry the same risks of over-heating, hyperthermia & finally DIC which is almost always fatal. PMA of course also carries much greater risks of toxicological poisoning, simply because of it's sharp response curve & dangerous therapuetic index.
